Pricesrose sharply at thebeginning of 2006on a perfect stormof EU reform, Asiandrought, Indian cropproblems, high ethanol demand and fund inflowsinto commodity markets in general. All this led topredictions of a deep deficit and even higher prices. As the year progressed, however, higher sugar pricesled to a diversion from ethanol to sugar and destockingin a number of key countries, most particularly in theEU and in China. Those higher pricesalso led to a rapidresponse on the partof producers, manyof whom sharplyincreased plantings.T h i s e x p a n d e dacreage combinedwith a recovery fromAsian drought has turned the sugar world on its head. The predictions now are for a world surplus productionof around five million tonnes.World sugar tradersface a number ofk e y c h a l l e n g e sgoing forward. Some– such as the endingof EU exports andthe growth of flexfuelcars in Brazil- arestructural. Others –such as Indian expansion - are cyclical. At this stage it isnot clear how these changes will play out, but they allimpact enormously on the way we all do business.Thewill provide a forumto discuss these issues and hopefully throw somelight on the road ahead.
