Ready for the Job InitiativeOverview• Since 2001, the Heldrich Center hasassessed the skill needs of key industriesfor the State of New Jersey.• Guided by Industry Advisory Groups, thisresearch analyzes existing data and collectsdetailed information from employers.• The Heldrich Center has profiled the skilland educational requirements of 73occupations that comprise over 1 millionjobs.6

II. NJNextStop.org Web site• The Heldrich Center and the State of NewJersey created this Web site to disseminatethe Ready for the Job research and othercareer information to high school students,counselors, teachers, and parents.• Averages 4,000 visitors per month.8

NJTrainingSystems.org• Created by the Heldrich Center and theState of New Jersey, this site helps jobseekers and students identify the trainingand education programs that meet theirneeds.• Provides information and assessments for4,300 training programs offered by 900training providers — two-thirds of allproviders in the state.• Used heavily by customers of NewJersey’s One-Stop Career Centers.10


IV. Verizon Career ConnectionsA Steering Committee of top business and educationgroups was convened to:• Educate students, parents, teachers, and schoolcounselors about career options;• Convene statewide conferences to showcasesuccessful business/education/workforcedevelopment system partnerships; and• Promote the use of online career informationresources.11


V. Industry Partnership EffortsThe Heldrich Center has initiated partnershipswith the Utilities/Energy, Financial Services,and Pharmaceutical sectors to:• Identify priority industry workforce needs,• Implement business/education/workforcedevelopment system partnerships to addressthe workforce needs, and• Evaluate the pilot efforts and make necessaryimprovements to the efforts.12
