Mainau Island’s recent history

Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden acquired Mainau Island in 1853.

His great-grandson Count Lennart Bernadotte († 2004) took over

the island in 1932 and turned it into the largest tourist attraction at

Lake Constance. He married Countess Sonja Bernadotte († 2008) in

1972 and the island became their life’s work. In 1974, they put the

island under the control of Mainau GmbH, whose shareholder is the

charitable Lennart-Bernadotte-Foundation.

Countess Bettina and Count Björn Bernadotte head the company

today. The present-day Bernadotte generation strive to carry on the

philosophy, valid since 1932, of providing a renewed oasis of natural

beauty, harmony and relaxation for visitors from all over the world

to enjoy.

The Mainau Flower Year 2012

A warm breeze rippling turquoise water, natural tranquillity, cheerful

colours and sweet scents delight the soul. Thoughts drift off as island

paradises give the impression of endless summers. Experience this

feeling on Mainau. Our 2012 theme “Sunshine dreaming - southern

islands” lends a South Sea flair to the exotic botanical treasures,

colourful festivals and musical and culinary delights.

Admire one of Germany’s largest orchid shows in the Palm House at

the start of the flower season. Thousands of tulips and narcissi bloom

along the spring avenues.

Choose the most beautiful rose in summer and the most beautiful

dahlia in autumn. The flowers, trees and shrubs are magnificent at all

times of the year.

Attractions

An island, full of stunning blossoms, rises majestically above its

sandbank in the light of the south. Exotic hemp and date palms in

the Palm House and colourful butterflies in the Butterfly House

lend a South Sea feeling throughout the year.

Relax in the herbaceous garden and enjoy the ever-changing scene

of plants. There’s lots of fun for small adventurers at Mainau

Children’s Land or at the farm with a petting zoo and pony rides.

Listen to talking plants in the enchanted garden or romp around at

Water World and Blumi’s Lakeside World.

Glittering events like the Count’s Island Festival, the Count’s

Castle Festival, the traditional Swedish Midsummer Festival, the

Lucia Festival and many more are very popular with our visitors.

Celebrating in a stylish ambience

Mainau gastronomy has been in existence for over 65 years. The

gastronomic offer ranges from snacks and afternoon coffee to

festive menus in a stylish ambience. Mainau chefs prepare culinary

delights for you to savour in unique surroundings; on the lakeside

terrace or in the historic rooms of the Baroque Castle. Take a break

and try some of the coffee and cake specialities served in the

subtropical ambience of the Palm House. The Schwedenschenke

furbished in the style of a Swedish country restaurant serves both

Swedish and local specialities - Pytt i Panna and Köttbuller meet

“badisch” flädle soup and Lake Constance wine. Exotic “taste of the

South Sea” variations of the classic seasonal dishes are also on the

menu in 2012. We look forward to seeing you, Smaklig måltid!
