SPRING 2007You can’t miss them. Those friendly facesdressed in their distinctive uniforms alwaysready to assist in any way possible. Theseare the faces of <strong>Emanuel</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> Centervolunteers. And although the faces of<strong>Emanuel</strong> volunteers may change over theyears, they continue to enhance patientcare through their desire to help others.<strong>Emanuel</strong> volunteers reflect diversity anda range of backgrounds – longtime localresidents, community newcomers, retirees,and students from local colleges andhigh schools.Director of Volunteer Services ReginaAmador said, “In 2006, our volunteersrecorded 59,621 service hours, anincrease of 11,895 hours from theprevious year.”The hospital continues to see tremendousgrowth in new volunteers. According toAmador, “a strong training program, newservice areas, and word-of-mouth recruitingare factors contributing to the increase.”This past year, 249 new volunteers joinedStudent volunteerTerra Curiel, left, andNancy Daley work atthe gift shop.<strong>Emanuel</strong> Volunteers Servewith Heart and SoulStudent Shaun Kandola,left, and Dorothy Beersand Margie Atkersonvolunteering at theinformation desk.and a total of 653 volunteers providedservice in 24 different hospital areas.Amador explained, “We’ve developedseveral new volunteer service areas basedon needs identified by the hospital andstaff where volunteers supplement theefforts of professional staff to allow moretime for patient care.”These new areas included addingvolunteers to the Maternal ServicesInformation Desk where volunteers assignvisitor badges, ambassadors in theEmergency Department, and volunteerswill soon provide concierge services at<strong>Emanuel</strong>’s new cancer center.For volunteer opportunities, contact theOffice of Volunteer Services at 664-5190.Celebrating HospiceIt’s May, andthe Festival ofTrees committeehas alreadybeen hardat work forfour monthsAshley Williams planning theannual gala, scheduled for the firstSaturday in December. This committedgroup is dedicated to providing a qualityevent experience, while raising significantfunding for Hospice of <strong>Emanuel</strong>. The2006 event raised a record breaking netprofit of $201,563 (a 41 percent increaseover the 2005 event) toward vital hospiceservices for our community. The gala hastruly become our area’s premiere event,while serving as <strong>Emanuel</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> Center’sonly annual fundraising event in support ofits Hospice program.The enthusiastic support displayed by thecommittee of volunteers is mirrored by theoverwhelming generosity of loyal hospicedonors. Our community has gratefullyembraced and supported hospice care formany years, as so many individuals havebeen touched by the compassionate careprovided by the Hospice of <strong>Emanuel</strong> team.It is a privilege to have the opportunityto serve in a role that provides a link forgenerous philanthropic support of sucha deserving program. The fundraisingimpact to this program is measurable andsignificant. In 2006, over one-half of thehospice annual operating budget wasfunded by charitable donations. In the pastfive years, contributions toward Hospiceof <strong>Emanuel</strong> have quadrupled, while thenumber of patients served annually hasincreased by nearly 60 percent. Simplyput, Hospice of <strong>Emanuel</strong> continues to growand provide valuable services because ofthe community’s support.Cynthia Palmer spoke of the care she andher family received during her mother’s(Marian Palmer) recent passing. “My sister,our children, and I have been touchedand transformed by our recent personalexperience with the Hospice of <strong>Emanuel</strong>program. Our hospice nurses floated inand out of our home like angels, they gaveus courage when we were frightened, andstrength when we lacked confidence” saidCynthia Palmer.Hospice of <strong>Emanuel</strong> is truly somethingspecial and worth celebrating.
