That reminds meof a story...Through a Glass, Darklyby Tim W. Callawayby Peter McManusIt’s no secret that I’m a picky eater. High maintenanceas some people would put it.But let me plead my case. I came by it honestly. Honest. When I was a young lad, my dad would take it uponhimself to whip up the week’s accumulation of leftoversand proceed to cook it all up in one pot, thus makingwhat he called goulash. Then he served the plates, making sure we all gotample amounts of his concoction. Apparently, he didn’twant to have more leftovers. The only problem with this was that I got it in myhead that I didn’t like certain elements of his, what hecalled, a wonderful dish. Yeah right!Take, for example, onions, green peppers, mushrooms, red peppers, and things like artichokes and especiallykidney beans and I shudder at the thought of them evenbeing on my plate. The problem was that he made me sit at the tableuntil the plate was clean. So I learned to adapt. I soondiscovered all the tricks of disposing of the aforementionedgoulash. We didn’t have a dog, so I relied heavily upon mybrother, who could eat anything, to help me. SometimesI had to promise him my weekly allowance for him totake away some of the food. Of course, there’s the oldtrick of asking if I could go to the bathroom and then fillmy mouth, run to the bathroom gagging and promptlyspitting it out. Or washing down some food with milk.I drank a lot of milk in those days!Bottom line is that I’m still averse to some of thesefoods. One time, while hitch hiking through central B.C.with some buddies, we hadn’t eaten for a few days andthen one of the guys confessed he had some beans. Thatgot my attention, until he produced out of his backpacka tin of kidney beans. As hungry as I was, I couldn’tbring myself to eating them. Another time, while travellingthrough Vancouver, my aunt made us some Spamsandwiches. All I could eat was the bread. This especially hit home after reading in Scripture thatwhen you sit down at an unbeliever’s table, to eat everythingput before you. It was with fear and trepidationthat I travelled to the Philippines on numerous occasions, wondering if this scenario would ever develop. Thankfully,it never did, and to this day I wouldn’t know whatI would do if something weird ended up on my plate. Now that I’m getting close to my senior years, I wonderif I’ll ever be able to eat goulash. Perhaps...when Ilearn that it’s all in my head. Now that’s food for thought!CITY LIGHT NEWS459 Astoria Cres SECalgary AB Canada T2J 0Y6Ph. 403-640-2011Fax 1-866-845-2019Toll Free: 1-866-640-2011Email: info@calgarychristian.comWebsite: www.calgarychristian.comPublisher: CLN PublicationsEditor: Peter McManuseditor@calgarychristian.com orinfo@calgarychristian.comSales: Leslie McManus 403-640-2011Proof Reading: Denise HillPrinted by: Star Press, WainwrightWeb design: Digital SmilesWriter’s Guidelines: Writers mayrequest a free copy of our guidelines orvisit www.calgarychristian.com. And apart from hushed and hurriedcomments in the church parking lot, it wasn’t a topic ofconversation in church circles either. God knows it shouldhave been given what the ecclesiastical world purports tobe about truth and all, but it wasn’t.Such was most unfortunate, of course, because the uglytruth is that sexual abuse has been rampant both withoutand within religious circles for a long, long time. If youneed some convincing as to approximately how long theskeletons have been lurking in the Judeo-Christian closet, you may want to check out Old Testament passages likeGenesis 38 and 2 Samuel 13. Ask your pastor to have oneof those texts read as next Sunday’s call to worship andsee what kind of reaction you get.Regrettably, long before horrific stories detailing widespreadsexual abuse among the Catholic priesthood beganemerging with dismaying regularity and/or children ofevangelical missionary organizations began relating nefarioussimilar tales, some of us were aware the statisticswere not painting a pretty picture.Accordingly, I was not surprised at all to learn recentlythat a convicted pedophile with a past record of servicewithin the Christian church had settled in the suburbanCalgary community where I’m employed. Nor is it uncommonthat too frequently I learn of sordid detailsemerging from the past or present history of Christianorganizations. Concerned? Yes. Surprised? No.Back in 1984 I conducted research on the topic of“sexual abuse within the evangelical church” as part ofthe requirements for a master’s degree. I was urgentlylooking for a research topic when a newspaper articlecaught my attention. It concerned a case then before thecourt involving allegations of incest against a leader witha lengthy record of faithful service in a prominent localchurch. The story claimed experts had reason to believethat statistics regarding sexual abuse in religious circlesrevealed horrors as bad as, if not worse than, statisticsfor society at large. In my naiveté I dismissed the claim until, upon reflection, realized that perhaps I’d just found my thesis topic.Research at numerous university libraries in greater Chicagouncovered only a couple of obscure journal articlesacknowledging the evil. Suffice it to say that following asurvey involving a necessary sample group of pastors ofevangelical churches across the American Mid-west, I hadshocking confirmation of a foul truth. Over 90 per cent ofrespondents acknowledged encountering sexual abuse inchurch life at some point in their careers. Something like 95per cent admitted they’d had no idea what to do about it.As you know, the alarming details regarding this travestyhave been regular fare on the nightly news for toolong now. If your church leadership isn’t talking aboutthis topic, be assured your church’s insurance companyis. Much as we would like it to be otherwise, numerousimplications related to an old reality are surfacing in newways that cannot be ignored. It’s another reminder thatwe dare not face the challenges of this new world usingold-world paradigms.Tim welcomes your comments and questions at justkeeponasking@gmail.com.LETTERS TO THE EDITORWe want to hear from you. Please send us your thoughts and opinions.Email us at: editor@calgarychristian.com or fax us at 403-640-2000.Sir,Thank you for publishing my letter in the October 2011issue of City Light News.I have a small correction to make. Dr. Damadian’s firstname is Raymond, not David. As an aside, Dr. Damadian, an open Biblical creationist, and inventor of the MRI, was awarded the United StatesNational Medal of Technology, and has been inductedinto the National Inventors Hall of Fame, along withThomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell and the WrightBrothers. Strangely though, all who worked in that fieldwere stunned to note that when the Nobel Prize forMedicine, which in 2003 went to the field of diagnosticMRI scanning, was awarded, Raymond Damadian wasnot included. The prize instead honoured two lesser contributors,Dr. Paul Lauterbur, and Sir Peter Mansfield, even thoughterms allow for up to three people to share the award.Even the New York Times noted that Dr. Damadian’sopen creationism may have been the reason for this. Canadianphilosophy professor, Michael Ruse, himself anevolutionist, commented that in the eyes of the Nobelcommittee, “It is bad enough that such people exist, letalone give them added status and a pedestal from whichto preach.”For those who wonder why creationist scientists don’tpublish in scientific journals, there is the reason. Suchinstances of censorship, denial of recognition, of tenure,of employment abound, as in Ben Stein’s movie Expelledand Dr. Jerry Bergman’s book, Slaughter of the Dissidents. The philosophy of naturalism, the notion that onlynatural processes are real (for which there is no scientificproof) has a stranglehold on the interpretation of allscientific data in mainstream science.Michael Ruse (cited above) remarks that by thosestandards, the Nobel committee (whose deliberationsremain sealed for 50 years) would also have to rejectIsaac Newton.Henry HiebertSylvan Lake, ABDear Editor,RE: Pastor Wagdi IskanderI totally agree with Brother Wagdi’s article in CityLight News last month. Today many Christian leaders arebeing led astray by the devil (masquerading as an angelof light) that Christians and Muslims worship the sameGod. They are even inviting Muslim leaders to speak totheir congregations. My first question is that how could you come to worshipthe same true God if you cannot even come to Himwithout Jesus Christ for He clearly declared that He is theONLY way to God.In regards to inviting speakers who deny the deity ofJesus Christ, what does the Bible say: 2 John 1:8-11 Watchyourselves, that you do not lose what we have accomplished, but thatyou may receive a full reward. Anyone who goes too far and doesnot abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the onewho abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son. Ifanyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receivehim into your house, and do not give him a greeting; for the onewho gives him a greeting participates in his evil deeds. Finally, let me add that even Jews cannot and will notworship the true God without coming through JesusChrist, the eternal God. We cannot share our pulpits withJewish preachers either. 1 John 2:23 – Whoever denies theSon does not have the Father; the one who confesses the Son hasthe Father also.Koshy ThomasCalgary, AB4 — NOVEMBER 2011, CITY LIGHT NEWS www.calgarychristian.com

This changecame as a result of some big changes in the AnglicanChurch at large.Anglican Essentials ’94, was a gathering of AnglicanChristians of Canada in Montreal, to articulate astatement of the essentials of the Christian faith, knownas Essentials. “We were hoping to call the AnglicanChurch of Canadaback to her Orthodoxroots. One significantthing that came outof that meeting wassomething called theMontreal Declaration ofAnglican Essentials,”Gibson said. “Thisdocument articulatesOrthodox Christianity:the essentials to ourunderstanding of thenature of the Trinity, thenature of sin, and theauthority of the Bible.Anglicanism and othermainline Protestantchurches were movingaway from the faithand formulating aRevisionist Christianitythat was downplayingand actually denyingthese essentials. In 1994we believed there hadto be a movement thatwould seek to call theAnglican Church ofCanada back to herroots. “There was a very strong Orthodox EvangelicalAnglican Clergy in Montreal in the 90’s, and there wereover 700 people that met, and gave a great deal ofthought into that meeting,” he pointed out.In 1998, over 600 Anglican Bishops, representingthe Anglican Communion worldwide, met in England.Resolution 110 came out of that meeting, with a clearexpression of the Biblical understanding of the orderingof human sexuality. It was clear in terms of practicethat the Anglican Communion should not move in thedirection of the legitimizing same-sex relationships. Atthat meeting 550 of the Bishops voted in favour of theResolution, 30 abstained and 50 voted against it.Despite this clear international statement, there wasa man by the name of Gene Robinson, divorced andnow living in a same-gendered relationship, in 2003in the United States. He was made a Bishop in theEpiscopal Church (the American branch of the AnglicanCommunion). There were more meetings in the AnglicanCommunion. The Primates (senior Bishops of 39provinces of the Anglican Communion) had numerousmeetings between 2003 and 2009 trying to pull theEpiscopal Church away from the direction they weregoing. There was a disregard for what the InternationalCommunion was saying and movement in the directionof the affirmation, licensing, consecration andordaining of people to ministry positions who werewww.calgarychristian.comin openly same-sex relationships. The same-sex issue is really just the tip of the icebergchallenging authority of Scripture and the nature ofthe church, denying essential Christian doctrine andChristology about the nature of Jesus, His life, death, and resurrection. This lightning-rod issue precipitated discussion ofother issues that go back to 1994 and the MontrealDeclaration of Anglican Essentials. Only one of the fourteenMontreal Declaration of Anglican Essentials speaks abouthuman sexuality. Most of them deal with the wholetheme of the nature of the faith.“On September2010, St. Augustine’scongregation in Ogdenbegan an intentionaldiscernment process, asto our future relationshipwith the AnglicanChurch of Canada andthe Diocese of Calgary,”Gibson stated. “We didthat from Septemberthrough to April, 2011.On April 10th wehad a vote in whichpeople were asked tostate:1) I believe I am calledby God to remain withinthe Anglican Church ofCanada, a member ofthe Diocese of Calgaryor2) I believe I am calledby God to realign withthe Anglican Churchin North America aspart of the Anglican— photo by Peter McManusGrace Anglican Church Rector, Jonathan Gibson.Network in Canada110 people voted. 78%believed they werecalled to realign and become part of this new Anglicanmovement,” he concluded. April 24 was Rector Gibson’slast Sunday at St. Augustine’s.Because of Gibson’s long relationship and connectionsin the community of Ogden he talked with Pastor JohnCuyler, of New Life Community Church (NLCC) inOgden. (7642 - 22 Street SE, Calgary, AB). The groupestablished Grace Anglican Church at NLCC on May 1,2011. Grace now rents office space and holds two Sundayservices: an 8:30am Holy Communion and a 1pm moreContemporary Communion. The new movement that Grace Anglican is part of ismade up of 37 churches in Canada and part of a largermovement of North American Anglicans. “We are stillAnglicans but just not part of the Anglican Churchof Canada,” Gibson elaborated. “The very thing wewere trying to do within the Anglican Church, with theMontreal Declaration, we realize is no longer possible. We decided there needed to be a new expression ofAnglicanism in North America which is seeking to befaithful to Scripture, true to what the church has alwaystaught about the nature of Christ, upholding the Biblicalstandards for human sexuality and morality, and tryingto find a way in all of that to planting of new churches.”To learn more about Grace Anglican Church visit http://www.anglicannetwork.ca/ or you can email Jonathan at: aniccalgary@shaw.ca.Culture modelersand makersby Brian Rushfeldt,Executive DirectorCanada Family Action CoalitionWho are the influencers that model and makeCanadian culture? Many people are concerned about the cultural shiftin Canada and its effect of weakening moral behavioursand human decency of society. Their concerns are valid! When and why this shift started is difficult todetermine, but the harmful consequences of rejectinga religious based moral foundation and embracingone of individualism and secularism is clear. This shiftescalated after the secular based Charter of Rights wasimplemented in 1982. Pierre Trudeau’s intent was toshift Canada from a Christian based society to one basedon secular humanism. And that intent – when it suitstheir ideology – is what drives many judges’ decisions.Canadians were duped by Trudeau and his promotion of“human rights” and all the “good things” he promised.Back then most Canadians had no idea of the futurenegative consequences.Concern about the erosion of civility, freedoms, morality and righteousness can turn into despair, or intodrive to become a culture maker. The Christian churchand religious freedoms have taken the brunt of the secularculture revolution. But the church has not responded withaction; with few exceptions it has remained in a cocoonof apathy. The abortion issue is one stark example ofprotestant churches failing to uphold a culture of sanctityof life and speak out for innocent unborn babies. TheCatholic church stands almost alone in its defense ofunborn life. Many protestant church people cry out fora political solution to the matter, while doing nothing toreach the culture with a spiritual solution.I am often asked, “How can I make a difference?”I often respond, “Get engaged,” which is a polite wayof saying get off your butt and do something. I thenexplain that as we model moral principles and teachand promote moral truth, we influence individuals andgroups. Collectively we can influence the nation. I cannotchange the culture on my own, but if five million GodfearingCanadians who believe that upholding moralprinciples that inspire good and noble behaviour, andthat obeying Jesus’ command to love others as ourselveswould boldly speak and act we would see quantum changein our nation.Engaging culture is quite simple. One does not haveto be a “star” nor a politician nor a hero – one just needsto be equipped with information and be bold to speakand act (with wisdom).Democracy gives us that freedom, just as Christianitydoes. Democracy has pitfalls but it is superior to socialism, communism or dictatorships. However, as Billy Grahamsaid, “democracy is only as good as the people involved init.” Stewarding democratic freedom necessitates engagingin society. Power to effect change is in the people whoengage. Abraham Lincoln said, “Elections belong to thepeople. It is their decision. If they decide to turn theirback on the fire and burn their behinds, then they willjust have to sit on their blisters.”I appreciate a quip by George Bernard Shaw,“Democracy is a device that ensures we shall be governedno better than we deserve.”It would do us well to remember that next time wehave an opportunity to run for political office or votefor good men and women who do.Christians are called to engage culture. We are asked tomodel righteousness and justice. We are commanded to“shine” God’s truth into dark and desperate situations. Itis we – God’s people – who are called to be culture makersand modelers, not culture compliers and consumers.CITY LIGHT NEWS, NOVEMBER 2011 — 5

Seeing in High DefinitionMixing Law and GraceSome say you can’t mix law and grace. Grace we aretold is a distinctly new covenant from the law. An Americanpreacher recently proved this point by reading fromRomans 7:24 and following. “O wretched man that I am!Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thankGod – through Jesus Christ our Lord! ...There is thereforenow no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus...For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has mademe free from the law...” That’s exactly what he read! Youmay have noticed that he skipped a few parts. Let’s readthe whole passage.“O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver meNeed Painting done this Fall?Ian Wilkinson Painting with 38 years of experience recommends ifyou need painting done to call Jason Wilkinson at 403-852-2338.It’s time to freshen up your living space.from this body of death? I thank God – through JesusChrist our Lord! So then, with the mind I myself servethe law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin. Thereis therefore now no condemnation to those who are inChrist Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, butaccording to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of lifein Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin anddeath. For what the law could not do in that it was weakthrough the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in thelikeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemnedsin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the lawmight be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to theflesh but according to the Spirit.” Rom 7:24 -8:4 NKJVWow! What a difference it makes when you read thecomplete passage. Paul is not saying he is free from thelaw. He is saying that he serves the law of God. The ‘prooftext’ says exactly the opposite of what the preacher saidit says. Paul says his flesh doesn’t want to serve the lawof God. His flesh rejects the law of God and wants toAdoption Awareness Monthby Ian Wilkinsonserve sin. Paul goes on to say thatJesus condemned sin in the flesh sothat we might serve the law of God not in our own powerbut in the power of the Spirit.Hebrews 8 says that God has written His law in bothour hearts and minds. This is the new covenant. If underthe covenant of grace, we don’t need the law, then Godhad no business writing into our hearts. In actuality, Godgives us grace so we can obey His commandments. Graceis not a substitute for these instructions but the divinepower to obey them. “Do we then make void the lawthrough faith? Certainly not! On the contrary we establishthe law.” – Rom 3:31 NKJVPerhaps the preacher was trying to say you can’t mixgrace and legalism. In 16 days, close to a million people have freely watched the movieon www.180Movie.com. The fiery controversy is overthe comparison of the Jewish Holocaust with Americanabortion. The Huffi ngton Post quoted author and Holocaustsurvivor Elie Wiesel as saying, “It is blasphemy to reducea tragedy of such monumental proportions to this humantragedy, and abortion is a human tragedy.” He added thatthose who compare the holocaust to abortion “prove thatthey do not know what the Holocaust was.”The movie’s producer, best-selling author, Ray Comfort, disagrees. “I’m also Jewish, and I spent months researchingfor a book I wrote called Hitler, God, and the Bible and weptmy way through the Holocaust. It was a horror beyondwords. But I have to agree in one respect. Nearly 60 millionAmericans have been slaughtered by abortion, and that’s10 times the amount of Jews who died under the Nazis. Soas far as numbers are concerned, there is no comparison.”In “180” Comfort argues that Hitler justified killing sixmillions Jews by saying that they weren’t “human” andhe maintains that that’s what those who are pro-abortiondo with babies in the womb. Comfort, who is also a TVco-host, added, “But the Nazi comparison doesn’t stopthere. Many people think that it was a mystery as to whatmotivated Hitler to kill so many Jews. It’s not a mystery atall. He seized the assets of wealthy Jewish families, and eachone he murdered added up to billions of dollars.” Accordingto experts, Hitler financed a massive 30 per cent of theGerman war effort by killing Jews and stealing their wealth.“Jewish murder was a lucrative and lawful business – fromthe taking of their homes, their paintings, their savings, the gold in their teeth, to the hair on their heads – all of itadded up to money in the bank for Hitler, and Americanabortion has the same big incentive.”Comfort pointed to abortion providers’ prices, by saying,“If you don’t believe that it’s a huge money-makingscheme, check out your local provider’s current prices. They will perform a procedure for just $765 for up to a 16week old child, but the price increases if the baby is over 19weeks. You will be shelling out three times the amount, andpaying a whopping $2,165 (www.fpamg.net/fees). That’spretty good income for a few minutes of ripping off thearms, the legs, and head of a baby onto a table; checkingthe body parts to make sure they’re all out, and then puttingthem in the trash. And it’s all legal, just like the Holocaust.”Comfort’s movie shows eight people who are adamantlypro-abortion, changing their minds to being pro-life, in amatter of seconds because he asked them one question. He is expecting more fierce opposition from pro-abortiongroups because “If you can change someone’s mind aboutabortion, you change the way they vote. And that’s a hugethreat to a billion dollar business.”CITY LIGHT NEWS, NOVEMBER 2011 — 11

Laughing MattersSo I married a humouristTwenty-nine years ago we embarked on a honeymoonwe’ve been trying to forget for—oh, about twenty-nineyears. A friend named “Bob” offered us his beach houseoutfitted for people in ministry who lacked money. Wequalified. Our first two nights were spent in a blissful stateat a luxury hotel. Then, with piggybank barely janglingwe hastened in our 1972 Mercury Comet to the “beachhouse,” a term I use here very loosely.Had there been a brochure, it would have read thus:“Conveniently located just steps from the outhouse, thisis the ideal train lover’s paradise and a favourite haunt ofbear-watchers and researchers from the Poison SumacInstitute. If you happen to be in the outhouse when thetrain thunders past (every half hour), your prayer life willbe deepened. Beware of three-legged tables, protrudingmattress springs and snakes—particularly the rattlingkind. The beach is located in a northeasterly direction, though you will never find it. What were you thinkingcoming here?”What happened next I am not proud of and it comfortsme to know that readers will keep this in strictestconfidence: We argued. We fought over things related toour circumstances and things unrelated. We stood in therain and uttered unkind words. Some of them true. Yes, Idrove too fast. Not only had I forgotten my toothbrush,I was too cheap to buy one. When a black bear climbedaboard our picnic table, we retreated to the car and argued.“I’ll just go sit with the bear,” I threatened. Someone inthe car said, “Go ahead.”What happened next I am even less proud of: I pointedthe Comet toward my mother-in-law’s house. I wish I wasmaking this up.Though Mom loves us dearly she had not anticipatedour arrival so had only single beds. Which was fine.Ramona was not remotely interested in sharing a roomwith me. Nor a bed or a toothbrush. The second nightI discovered a phrase that has saved my marriage morethan any other: “I’m sorry, Babe. I can do better.” AndI found that single beds can be pushed together, thoughyou run the risk of losing one of you in the night. On this our 29th anniversary, we’ve been reflecting onthe words theologian Rod Stewart sings, “I wish that Iknew what I know now when I was younger.” Here area few things we know now.1. I don’t eat garlic unless she does.2. When I’m lost she lets me drive around, remainingsilent when I stop and ask for directions.3. I don’t compare her soup to my mother’s.4. Four years into our marriage we ceased trying to fixeach other.5. When I do compare soups, I say “I’m sorry. I will tryto never do it again. How can I make it up to you?”6. If selfishness and criticism vamoose, love and joycan enter.7. Laugh lots. Even when she says, “You want breakfastin bed? Sleep in the kitchen.”8. We don’t let the sun go down on our wrath. We stayup and fight.9. At least once a year we lie on our back and watch thestars (lately we’ve had more trouble getting up).10. Whether I need to or not, every four to six years Ibuy underwear in bulk.11. We’ve loved our marriage enough to protect it, believingGod’s laws are for our joy, not our misery.12. Most nights I read her a book. One of mine! Whata blessing!13. When we worry about the kids or the cheque-bookwe remind each other that worry is like cracks in ourby Phil Callawayhome’s foundation.14. Every day we pray our favourite prayers together:“Help!” And “Thanks!”15. We dance together. Even if our children are aroundand make gagging noises.16. Together we have cruised the Nile, toured remotestAfrica, strolled the heathered glens of Scotland, andwalked in the footprints of Jesus—all through books.17. We look for the good in each other and find it.18. She doesn’t show me bills until I’ve eaten.19. We enjoy lasting friendships with couples who shareour values.20. We view debt as a four-letter word. Divorce too.21. She golfs with me. Or at least drives the cart.22. I shop with her. But bring a book.23. Sometimes we play oldies music from our dating days.24. She encourages me to hang with the guys.25. She says she likes me better with less hair (she lies).26. Every single day I can’t believe she married me.27. Last Christmas she gave me a GPS without sayinga word (I now have a woman in my car telling mewhere to go).28. We’re learning to celebrate and emulate God’s grace. It’s not so much where we start out but where weend up that counts.29. Sometimes I tighten jars. That way she needs me.Someone asked where I’ll take her for our thirtieth.“Bob” claims he’s renovated that beach house with indoorplumbing. I shall try to remember to bring my toothbrush.Visit Phil online at www.laughagain.org.www.calgarychristian.comCITY LIGHT NEWS, NOVEMBER 2011 — 15

The dominoe effect of adoptionby Karen HartungCurious, 13 year oldDamali watched from adistance as she studiedthe blonde-haired, blueeyedwhite man who hadrecently joined the GoodShepherd’s Fold orphanagenestled in the trees inWairaka, Uganda. She didnot realize the impact thisyoung man would have onher life. Over the next 10months, Cordell would providea healthy role modelfor, not only in being herfriend, but more importantlyin demonstratingChrist’s love to her. LikeJesus, Cordell was demonstratinga servant heartas he sacrificed time andmoney to travel to a foreigncountry and volunteer inthis orphanage. Many tearswere shed the day Cordellstood at the gate, wavinggood-bye to the children. He seemed to be leaving apiece of his heart there. Onthe other side of the gate,Damali felt the same. Now a beautiful youngwoman at 17 years old,Damali had no idea theyouthful, pretty, blondewhite girl who had justarrived from Canada wasCHURCH DIRECTORYCordell’s little sister. It wasa day not much differentthan the day Cordell hadarrived; all the childrenstaring, wondering whothis white girl was. WhenNadine smiled, her uniqueblue eyes sparkled, andDamali soon realized herconnection to Cordell. Likehim, it was easy to loveNadine. Her main task wasto be ‘mom’ to the babies, but during her six months, she also developed strongrelationships with manyof the children, includingDamali who witnessedChrist’s love being livedout through Nadine.Once again, God hadsent a role model for Damali. This was her family, and in a strange sort of way,Cordell and Nadine weretwo of her many ‘adoptive’parents. These friendshipswould prove to be a key influencein her future plans. In time, Damali left theorphanage to attend universityin Kampala, Uganda,to gain a degree in SocialWork, was employed by Samaritan’sPurse and today, has opened two orphanagesin Uganda, fulfilling herdream of passing on thegift of love and adoptionshe received as a child. As we reflect on adoptionduring the month ofNovember, my challengeto you is: If you are not ina position to adopt a childfull time, how can youunofficially speak into achild’s life? Are you willingto volunteer at an orphanage? If not, adopt a childfor a time by befriendingthe one next door whoseparents are never home.Seek out one of the manyuniversity students in ourcity who would love to havean ‘adoptive’ parent whilethey are away from home. How can you speak intothem? Be a mentor. Seehow God can use you righthere in our city.Imagine a table full ofdominoes all standing atattention. As soon as thefront one is moved to action, they all react accordingly.Likewise, we can allbe part of adoption. Areyou the front one to startthe action? Perhaps in doingso, you too will cause a‘dominoe’ affect to the actof adoption.Church Directory827Worship Servicesat110am and 6pmSundaySouthsideVictory Center6402 1A St SW(right next to Chinook C-Train Station)Calgary, AB T2H 0G6Ph. 403-253-7777info@southsidevictory.cawww.southsidevictory.caTHE REDEEMEDCHRISTIANCHURCH OF GOD,Christ EmbassyChurchhof Many NationsSunday Service: 10amCrescent Heights Community Centre1101 - 2nd Street NW Calgary403-293-9398 • 305-4490info@rccgembassy.orgdoyyeen@yahoo.com2FairviewBaptistChurchwelcomes you toa traditionalWorship ServiceSunday Service 11amSunday School(all ages) 9:45amEvening Service 6:30pmpastor@fairviewbaptistchurch.cawww.fairviewbaptistchurch.caAt the corner ofFairmount Drive and78th Ave SECall 403-252-170449123115614Calgary ManminChurchDiseases are healed by the power of God!God is a living God and the Bible is true!Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. – Hebrews 13:8Works of God’s power as recorded in the Bibleare taking place today through Rev. Pilgrim Books closing its doorsA note of thanks to our dear customers and friends; It has been almost 25 years since Pilgrim Books (PB) opened in a very small roomdowntown in Clennan Square. Grace Eby began her little book ministry there with about1,500 books (I’m told). Her friend, Ivy Russell, helped her sell those books for many yearsand the ministry grew…and grew. Grace became ill and so passed the mantle onto her sisterRuth Maconochie, who did an amazing job, helping, inspiring and ministering to many. She hired some ministry focused people to work along side of her (remember Sue,Daisy, Kelsey, Sharon and Glen?) and together they made a difference in people’s livesfor many years.PILGRIM BOOKS WAS NEVER JUST ABOUT SELLING BOOKS!When Ruth retired the mantle was passed on to a previous employee and long timeadmirer of the Pilgrim ministry, Wendy Janzen. Almost 25 years later, Pilgrim Books isclosing down for good. What do we want our customers to know? Is it about location? Is it about book prices? Is it about staffing? Had Pilgrim Books lost or changed its focuson ministry?NONE OF THE ABOVE!!! PB is and always has been a ministry-focused business.Books have always been better than reasonably priced and location has not changed athing. Our staff are the cream of the crop (Sue , Brenda & Louise…remember Carly,Marilyn and Aleena?) and always focused on how they can best help the customer…sometimes through prayer, sometimes through evangelism, sometimes just a listeningear or a hug…and many times through quality books. Our books have been world travelers too! From Ghana, Africa to India & Ethiopia…we could not be more pleased and thankful for all involved in making these special booktravels possible.Pilgrim Books is closing because the book world is changing rapidly. We are simplyunable to make ends meet anymore. The internet has really taken charge. Books areeasily available for download or at sale prices that often even a used bookstore cannotcompete with. This is a world wide issue. Book stores have been closing since 2005. Wehave been so blessed to be able to be around as long as we have. We have seen peoplegive their lives over to Christ and we are so happy to have been there to listen, pray withand encourage many others. We have found that un-findable book for the avid readerand have tried to steer people to the true God of the Bible for the answers they haveneeded. It’s been a good run!Ourselves a book that is in the last chapter and on the last page…what a great read!!!And now we have finished the course that’s been set before us and with gratitude to Godand to you, our customers and friends, we bid a fond farewell! We leave with many happymemories of God at work…what more could be asked for?!Thanks be unto God for His unspeakable gifts! Local book for your fall reading...How much pain can you bear?by Sharon EnnisHave you ever received the worst news possible – newsthat would change your life forever? We did. I am a motherof a four-year old girl, Gabrielle, who was born with thelower part of her spine undeveloped. It’s a birth defectthat I knew nothing about, called spina bifida. WhenGabrielle was born, the lesion on her back was openedand exposed. I was staring at something that was aboutto change our lives forever.Spina bifida is a neural tube birth defect where thespinal column fails to develop properly resulting in varyingdegrees of permanent damage to the spinal cord andnervous system. Hydrocephalus is a medical condition inwhich there is an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinalfluid (CSF) in the ventricles, or cavities, of the brain. This neural tube defect occurs within the first fourweeks of pregnancy…before most women even knowthey are pregnant.“For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in mymother’s womb. I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfullymade…” — Psalm 139:13-14Gabrielle needed surgery immediately to reduce the riskof infection and to protect the spinal cord from greaterdamage. Because of this opening, the nerves in her spinalcolumn may be damaged and not work properly. It wastough to watch our daughter undergo two surgeries inthe first week of her life or to listen to her doctors talkabout her many deficiencies that she will have to livewith. I felt as though I was in an awful dream. I wantedto wake up to a whole new world that never spoke thewords spina bifida.“ I cried like a swift or thrush, I moaned like a mourning dove.My eyes grew weak as I looked to the heavens. I am troubled; OLord come to my aid!” — Isaiah 38:14For months, that dark world paralyzed me with incrediblefears and horrible doubts as I took care of Gabrielle.I had so many questions for God to answer. Even thoughI was surrounded by family and great friends, I felt completelyand utterly alone. I would cry to God on my knees, not wanting to get up until a miracle happened in her. I feltso small and hollow inside. I had been on an emotionalrollercoaster ride since Gabrielle’s birth.“The Lord is close to the broken hearted and saves those whoare crushed in spirit” — Psalms 34:18.I pray and remind myself of the Word of God. Iknow that He will help us as a family. He has never leftus through all the surgeries, therapies and tests. Godwill never forget us because He loves us so much. Weby Gladys TerichowWinnipeg, MB. – MennoniteCentral Committee’s(MCC) response to thedrought and food crisis inEast Africa continues toexpand.Donations to MCC’sdrought response are enablingMCC to providelife-saving food vouchers, water and other supportto tens of thousands ofpeople in Somalia, Kenyaand Ethiopia.Stand out amongthe crowd.AdvertiseinCity LightNews.Call 640-2011Southern, Bluegrass, andCountry Gospel Musicknow that God will cause even the worst things to cometogether for good. An estimated 60percent are under the ageof 18.To improve educationalopportunities for youngpeople in the camps, MCCis sending 38,000 schoolkits to the Hagadera campfrom its warehouses inCanada and the U.S. Theschools are operated by LutheranWorld Federation.“Education helps breakthe cycle of poverty, andbeing in school improvesthe security for these children,”said Ratzlaff. “Withouteducation, even if theymanage to find a life outsideof the refugee camp, they would then be unableto find any work other thanpossibly casual labour.”MCC is also sending2,900 blankets and 500sewing kits to the Hagaderacamp and providingfunds for the local purchaseof 6,000 mosquito nets. These practical items, theRatzlaffs said, not onlyprovide comfort to peopleliving in very rugged conditions, they also demonstratethat someone caresfor them. This is especiallyimportant as many haveexperienced unspeakabletrauma during their hazardousjourney to the camp.In the Somali town ofDhobley, near the Kenyaborder, contributions toMCC are being used toprovide emergency foodassistance for new arrivalsand their host families.Dhobley is on the sameroad as the Dadaab camps, which are about 100 kilometres(almost 65 miles)inside Kenya. For more information or tocontribute to the ongoing workof MCC in East Africa andaround the world, contact MCCAlberta at officeab@mccab.org or visit mcc.org/eastafricadrought.22 — NOVEMBER 2011, CITY LIGHT NEWS www.calgarychristian.com

Music ReviewWakeup StarlightThe BreakdownAs a radio programmer, I get to listen to a lot of newmusic. Sadly, much of it falls under the “same old, sameold” category. What I look for are songs that stand out among thepack, ones that compel you to listen to them over andover again.Wakeup Starlight’s single, This Place Is Empty, is a textbookexample of what I’m talking about. This catchypop-worship tune doesn’t just have ahook, it’s replete with hooks. Thereis continuous movement from onemusical element to the next, intricateproduction and arrangements, accompaniedby beautifully layered vocals— all undergirded by an alluringmelody and finely-crafted rhythmics. And that’s not to mention the intelligent, original, heart-tugging lyrics. You’ll never find yourself saying,“Haven’t I heard this somewherebefore?”But it gets even better than that.Wakeup Starlight’s debut album, The Breakdown, amplydemonstrates that this group is no one-hit wonder. ThisPlace… is just one of many gems to be found on the disc. And each song is distinctly different from the others. These guys can rock out with tunes like Superman andMy Weakness, offer acoustic sensibilities on God, cater toadult contemporary radio with Sister, and yes, hyperventilateon Hyperventilation. They even offer a folksy renditionof the classic hymn, It Is Well.Already totally sold-out on the boys, personally themost exciting news came after checking out their bios onthe Internet. It turns out the duo of Chris Noble and CalebCummings actually hail from our own backyard. Theyreviewed by Peter Fleckmet up and began playing together as youngsters at LivingSprings Christian Fellowship in Airdrie. Unbeknownst tome, Noble had even been a part of the worship team atmy own congregation of Centre Street Church in Calgary.More recently, the fellows reunited in Three Hills to formWakeup Starlight. At the 2011 Covenant Awards, representing the best inCanadian Christian music, Wakeup Starlight is nominatedin two categories, including a well-deserved nod for NewArtist of the Year — although they will be facing toughcompetition from the likes of City Harmonic and Tenore. The lead track, One Step Away, is additionallyup for Pop/ContemporarySong of the Year, despite not evenbeing one of strongest cuts fromthe project.A major weakness with TheBreakdown is in the CD packaging. The artwork is attractively put togetherin a digipack format, but thereis a dearth of information inside. With no accompanying booklet, there are no printed lyrics, instrumentalcredits or even mention ofthe producer, who deserves ampleacknowledgement for the final outcome. There is also a major chasm in the production andsound quality between the first nine studio tracks and thefinal three live tracks. The division is so stark that it’s almostlike you’re listening to two entirely different projects. What is undeniable is the raw talent of Noble and Cummingsand their innate understanding of how to craft notjust good but great music. Hopefully, this duo will enjoya long and prosperous career in an industry where veryfew survive beyond one or two albums. I’ll certainly bewatching them.Available for $13.99 wherever Christian music is sold.Rosebud, AB – Rosebud is taking a bite out of the BigApple for its Christmas show.
