Yes <strong>and</strong> far more : History,pathos <strong>and</strong> humor, morality, religion, patriotism, warning,inspiration, what shall we not find ? But of thenameless <strong>graves</strong>, wh<strong>et</strong>her in consecrated ground, or inthe plain, the cultivated farm once the scene of bloodywarfare, in the ruined fort, or in many a lonely spot wecan never or rarely know the story. Many of these forina page of history never to be wholly deciphered, butl<strong>et</strong> us try while we may, imperfectly though it be, toplace on record, from inoss grown stone defaced by timeor perchance ruder touch, the names <strong>and</strong> what we canpiece tog<strong>et</strong>her of the early pioneers, wh<strong>et</strong>her men or women,po<strong>et</strong> or artisan, soldier or priest, legislator or farmer,teacher or sailor, <strong>and</strong> from these pages of the pastwe may learn lessons for the present or the future, lessonsof courage, of unselfishness, of generosity, of friendship,of patriotism, of duty, of religion. Then thevdied, shot do\\n by stealthy Indian, or French or Americanfoe, as now they give up their young lives onAfrica's arid veldt, but each inspired by the same adventurousspirit which has made the Briton, be he Celtor Saxcn, the pioneer in the world's progress, one ofthe factors in that "morning drum beat which encirclesthe globe" <strong>and</strong> proud that he is one of a nation "onwhose dominions the sim never s<strong>et</strong>s."While most of the graveyards in the Niagara peninsulahave been visited <strong>and</strong> such help used as could heobtained from tabl<strong>et</strong>s on the walls of churches, monuments,church registers, tradition, historical records, ithas been found that there has been as much change inthe fashion as there is in dress or buildings.
