Day IV - 25 April 200809.30 – 05.30 PMSessi<strong>on</strong> - Photo documentati<strong>on</strong> – some do’s and d<strong>on</strong>’t’sParticipants summarized previous day’s sessi<strong>on</strong>s. Mr. Jayaraj, the resource pers<strong>on</strong> forthe sessi<strong>on</strong> was <strong>in</strong>troduced.Jayaraj stressed <strong>on</strong> 5 Cs while tak<strong>in</strong>ga good photograph – Colour,Compositi<strong>on</strong>, C<strong>on</strong>trast, Closeup andCamera angle. He expla<strong>in</strong>ed eachelement with an illustrati<strong>on</strong> ofphotographs.Colour and Compositi<strong>on</strong> play animportant role <strong>in</strong> the mak<strong>in</strong>g of a goodpicture. The picture should be framed<strong>in</strong> such a way that the compositi<strong>on</strong>reflects the photographers <strong>in</strong>tenti<strong>on</strong>s.Participants dur<strong>in</strong>g practice sessi<strong>on</strong>Camera angle: This helps <strong>in</strong> add<strong>in</strong>g a dramatic effect to the photograph. There arethree levels at which the camera could be placed to capture a shot.Close ups can be used when the photographer wishes to capture emoti<strong>on</strong>, for example.C<strong>on</strong>trast: Extra life is given to a picture if there is a good c<strong>on</strong>trast between the colours<strong>in</strong> the compositi<strong>on</strong>.After the presentati<strong>on</strong>, doubts <strong>on</strong> various aspects of photography were clarified.Practice Sessi<strong>on</strong>The participants were organized <strong>in</strong>to four groups. The digital cameras helped <strong>in</strong> look<strong>in</strong>gat the compositi<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>stantly. Each <strong>on</strong>e was asked to shoot <strong>in</strong>dividually for 2 hourskeep<strong>in</strong>g all the po<strong>in</strong>ts discussed earlier.The participants selected 4-5 photos for group assessment. Various aspects of thephotographs were discussed. Tips were given by Jayaraj who was keen to share the‘trade secrets’.Participants thanked the resource pers<strong>on</strong>, enjoyed encourag<strong>in</strong>g each other, and alsothe lighter moments of some ‘outstand<strong>in</strong>g’ compositi<strong>on</strong>s.Jayaraj also said, <strong>in</strong> videography, al<strong>on</strong>g with 5Cs there is <strong>on</strong>e more C, i.e. C<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>uity,which is important.Learn<strong>in</strong>gsImportance of compositi<strong>on</strong>Be<strong>in</strong>g clear <strong>on</strong> the purpose/objectiveUnderstood the importance of colour – richness and c<strong>on</strong>trastUnderstand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong> the usage of light<strong>in</strong>g – avoid<strong>in</strong>g shadows.13
