EDITOR’S LETTER
Two new developments are likely to energise the
electrity-generating sector. One is from US-based
HelioFocus, founded in 2007, which has developed an
innovative thermo-solar systemcomprising a special receiver
located in the centre of a large parabolic mirror. Helix Wind,
Corp. is probably best known for its design, manufacturing and sales of small wind vertical axis turbines
designed to generate 300W, 1kW, 2.0kW, and 4.5kW of clean, renewable electricity.
The new HelioFocus unit takes the form of a six-storey high dish which beams highly-concentrated
sunlight into a receiver. The receiver uses this energy to heat air to nearly 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit,
then shoots it through a gas turbine (the basis of jet engines) developed by Capstone.
The concept has already found industry backers. In January 2010 HelioFocus reportedly raised $11.5m
from China's Sanhua and IC Green Energy to further develop a thermo-solar system. The Chinese
company Sanhua will invest US$9.25m and IC Green Energy will invest
US$2.31m - a total investment of US$45m.
Hellix Wind Corp..
The second development comes from the Helix Wind Corp. Its vertical
axis wind turbines are an intriguing technology that most people know
little about. The turbines we are accustomed to use blades to turn a
horizontal axis (which is often housed in the little cupola on the top of
the turbine's tall stem). Vertical axis turbines turn a vertical shaft to
generate power. In a recent deal, Helix Wind signed a contract with a West
African telecom company to power cellphone towers using wind energy.
This allows the towers to operate autonomously without transmission links
or diesel generators. The Savonius turbine based design catches wind from
all directions creating smooth powerful torque to spin the electric generator. Mounted up to 35 feet

system creates electricity to power an
average home or business.
The concept behind the turbine is
simplicity itself. As the wind blows, the
long helical blade scoops catch wind
from all directions forcing it through the
turbine.
The turbine generator is connected
directly to a home and as electricity is
generated your home is powered. If the
wind isn't blowing a home might be
powered by the energy grid as usual. If
the wind is blowing strongly then the
energy produced can exceed the energy
consumed and - in the words of a
company spokesman - "Depending on
your local utility, at that point your
meter can spin backwards, rolling back
your energy bills.”

Capstone Turbine Corp has has sold a
C1000 natural gas-fired turbine to a
specialty meat producer in Italy
seeking to improve its onsite power
capacity.
This deal represents one of the first
sales of a Capstone C1000 power
package in Italy. A Capstone
distributor company, the IBT Group,
sold the C1000 to Recla, a company
in the Italian Alps which produces
ham, sausages, bacon, salami,
prosciutto and other high-end meat
products. The bulk of these are
exported to the United States and
elsewhere around the world. The

bearing, remote monitoring and diagnostic
capabilities, and integrated utility synchronisation
and protection. The small, modular C1000 systems
allow for easy and low-cost installation.
The C1000 turbine will be installed in Recla's
production facility in a combined heat and power
application. The turbine will provide 1 MW of
electricity to supplement power from the local
utility. In addition, waste heat from the turbine will
be captured to preheat water for steam used in the
manufacturing process.
Rolls-Royce wins Yemen and Spain orders
Rolls-Royce has announced orders
worth over US$200 million for
electrical power generation
equipment from customers in
various countries, including two
on-site energy supply schemes.
A new oil processing installation
at a remote desert location in
Yemen will use a combination of
Rolls-Royce gas and diesel engines
to provide 16 MW of baseload
electrical power.
Kentz Overseas has ordered three
Bergen B35:40 12-cylinder gas
fuelled engines. The company has
also ordered a single 12-cylinder
Bergen B32:40 diesel engine, in a
contract valued at US$14 million.
The fuel for the engines will be
associated gas, which is currently
being flared off and represents
wasted energy.

MW hydrogen fuelled combinedcycle
power plant it describes as
‘the world's first such facility to
produce energy in significant
amounts’.
The plant, in Fusina, near
Venice, is reported to be "a first
step" in the development of

Currently, electricity generated
by hydrogen is esimated to cost
five to six times more money than
energy produced by other means.

World's first hybrid solar-coal power plant
The world's first ever hybrid solarcoal
power plant is now operating
at Unit 2 of the Cameo
Generating Station near Palisade
in Colorado.
The project was developed by
Xcel Energy in conjunction with
Abengoa Solar, which developed
the solar parabolic trough technology
that concentrates solar
energy to produce heat. The
demonstration project is
expected to cut the use of
coal at the power plant by
around two or three
percent, and could be
scaled up to cut it by ten
per cent.
The system works through
a series of parabolic
trough solar collectors
made of glass mirrors.

On sunny days the mirrors concentrate the
solar radiation onto a line of receiver tubes
filled with a heat transfer fluid (mineral
oil).
The solar energy heats the circulating oil
to about 300°C (575°F). The heated oil is
then fed to a heat exchanger where the
heat is transferred to water to heat it to
around 200°C (407°F) before it enters the
boiler. Having hotter water entering the
boiler means less coal is needed to heat it
and produce the steam that turns the
turbine to generate electricity.
Vice president of Xcel Energy, and chief
supply officer, Kent Larson, commented:
“The project will help move the use of
solar energy one step closer to being a
potential technology for improving the
environmental performance of coal-fired
power plants."
CEO of Abengoa Solar, Santiage Seage, also
said the company believed the solar-coal
combination would provide a cost-effective
way of delivering solar energy.
Other companies are pursuing similar
developments or are evaluating hybrid
power generation plants to see if the
combination can provide environmental
benefits at a commercially viable cost.
For example a group or companies have
joined with the Electric Power Research
Institute to study the feasibility of hybrid
coal-solar plants in North Carolina and New
Mexico, while in Florida NextEra Energy is
developing a hybrid solar-natural gas plant
for eventual commercial deployment.

Cummins to Expand Product Line in Indiana, USA
Cummins Inc. has announced that it is
expanding its High-Horsepower Technical
Center and high-horsepower engine product
line at its Indiana-based manufacturing
facility in Seymour.
The expansion of the center will provide the
company with more opportunities for
producing high-horsepower clean-diesel and
natural gas engines in the future.
Mark Levett, Vice President and General
Manager of the High-Horsepower Business,
made the announcement at the plant last
moth and was joined by Indiana Lt. Gov.

Cummins has plans to invest approximately
$100 million in the expansion of the site at
the Seymour plant, which is expected to
result in the creation of approximately 200
engineering and manufacturing jobs over
the next five years. The plant currently
employs nearly 450 people.
The company has also announced that it has
changed the name of the facility to the
Seymour Engine Plant, from the Cummins
Industrial Center.
The new name is consistent with the
company's practice at many of its major
engine manufacturing locations elsewhere.
"Our high-horsepower business continues to
grow in importance," Tom Linebarger,
President and Chief Operating Officer, told
WIP.
"This facility and product line expansion will
allow us to maintain our technology leadership
and strong product portfolio,” he said.
He concluded: “Cummins will continue to
provide leadership as our customers face
ever more challenging worldwide emissions
regulations."
A new, larger-displacement engine will
complement Cummins' current high-horsepower
lineup, which powers applications in
mining, power generation, marine, oil and
gas and rail markets around the world.
The product investment will increase the
plant's capacity and manufacturing
capability, including a new assembly line,
paint area and production test cells.
The technical center expansion will virtually
double the current engineering footprint in
the facility and increase Cummin’s highhorsepower
mechanical development
capabilities.

Are you a fan of windfarms?
Is windpower truly the saviour of world energy economies? WIP’s respected economics
expert, Christopher Hopkins, looks at some of the cost issues behind the green power.
According to current estimates,
worldwide the nameplate capacity
of wind-powered generators is
thought to be about 159.2GW.
Compare that with energy production -
put at 340 TWh - and it represents about
2% of worldwide electricity usage.
Worldwide, several countries have
achieved relatively high levels of wind
power penetration - largely thanks to
hefty governmental subsidies).
For example, broadly speaking around
19% of stationary electricity production in
Denmark is subsidised, 13% in Spain and
Portugal, and 7% in Germany and the
Republic of Ireland. This is out of about
86 countries around the world using wind
power on a commercial basis.
Large-scale wind farms are connected to
the electric power transmission network;
smaller facilities are used to provide
electricity to isolated locations. Utility
companies increasingly buy back surplus
electricity produced by small domestic
turbines.
Wind turbines have grown larger and
taller. Turbines in the 1.5 to 2.5 MW range
have more than doubled their share of the
global market. Not surprisingly, turbine
efficiency has increased and a mixture of
taller turbines, improved components and
better siting has resulted in an overall
efficiency increase of 2 - 3% annually over
the last 15 years.
Investment costs, too, have decreased.
The average cost per kW of installed wind
power capacity currently varies from 900
€/kW to 1,150 €/kW. The turbine itself
comprises about 80% of this total cost.
The remainder is contributed by three
main items - foundations, electrical
installation, grid connection – and then
other costs are land, road construction,
consultancy and financing costs.
The other principal cost element in
generating electricity from wind power is

South Korean construction company
Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has
signed a $1.6bn contract for building
an independent power plant (IPP) in Saudi
Arabia.
HHI, as a sole EPC contractor, won the
order to build a power plant for Riyadh
PP11 IPP project from Dhuruma
Electricity, a project company established
by Saudi Electricity Company (SEC). The
work i9s in associatuion with the sponsor
consortium led by France's GDF Suez in
partnership with Aljomaih Holding of
Saudi Arabia and Japan's Sojitz.
HHI will provide the 1,729MW of gasfired
combined cycle power capacity on a
turnkey basis, including design, supply,
construction, commissioning, testing and
handing over, which will be completed by
2013. The off-taker for power is SEC.
The total cost of the project is approximately
$2.1bn. The project is a part of
Saudi Arabia's long-term power production
capacity expansion plan.

Earlier this year Hyundai Engineering &
Contracting boosted the value of its
Middle Eastern portfolio to US $4.4 billion
following a partnership with HBK
Contracting to work on the first phase of
Doha's Musheireb project, a US $5.5bn
residential and cultural development.
Hyundai Heavy Industries has also won
order to build a diesel power plant worth
US$70 million from Bangladesh Power
Development Board (BPDB).
HHI is to construct 70MW scale power
plant in Bera, 170km Northwest of the
Bangladesh capital, Dhaka.
The power plant will be equipped with
nine of its 8000kW scale V-type engines -
model name: 18H32/40V.
HHI has already begun plant construction

and plans to complete the power plant
project by August 2011. The company will
provide all phases of project
implementation from integrated design,
supply of equipments and materials,
installation and trial operation on the
engineering, procurement and
construction (EPC) basis.
With the completion of the power plant,
a stable electricity supply for 100,000
households will be available.
Bangladesh, with a population of over
150 million people, is suffering heavily
from electricity shortages of 2,000MW
every day due to surging electricity
consumption. The Bangladesh government
has prioritised the construction of
additional power plants in an effort to
meet national electricity demands.
In recent years HHI has exported
approximately 1,300 units of power
generating facilities to over 27 countries
worldwide such as to countries in
Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Latin
America, Europe and Africa.

Jenbacher biogas engines waste
Increasingly, Jenbacher biogas engines
are using the biogas from anaerobic
fermentation of organic waste from
agriculture, foodstuff or feed industries.
This fuel can substitute for fossil fuels.
The global installed base of almost 1,300
GE Jenbacher gas engines running on
biogas has the capacity to generate more
than 6.8 million MWh of electricity per
year without burning fossil fuel. This is
equivalent to the annual electricity
demands of over 617,000 US households,
over 1.6m European households or over
1.5m urban Chinese households.
A GE Jenbacher JGS 620 gas engine
running at full capacity for 8,000 hours
per year on associated petroleum gas,
when used instead of a comparable diesel
generator, is designed to avoid the
combustion of more than 4.8m litres of
diesel fuel per year while generating
electricity. This could yield an annual
savings of more than US$ 2.5m based on a
diesel price of US$ 0.53 per litre.
Along with natural gas operation,
Jenbacher technology makes it possible to
dispose of environmentally offensive gases
(e.g., from landfills, agriculture, coal
mining, chemical plants, and other
industries). To date, Jenbacher gas engine
cogeneration systems are also used for
CO2 fertilisation in greenhouses and
absolutely nothing

engine can be used to dry grain and wood
chips. The substrate from the biomass

Gas engines can also run on biogas
produced from materials such as liquid
manure and corn.

Maintaining power transformers
with dielectric response analysers
Accurate determining moisture content is a crucial factor in the condition assessment of
power transformers. That’s why DIRANA technology from Omicron is important when
it comes to preventing insulation decomposition & decreased dielectric strength.
DIRANA, the DIelectric Response
ANAlyser from OMICRON,
determines in a simple and
efficient way the moisture content of
liquid filled transformers. Accurate
knowledge of the moisture content is a
crucial factor in the condition assessment
of power transformers.
High moisture levels accelerate
insulation decomposition, decrease
dielectric strength and may cause bubbles
to form at elevated temperatures.
Additionally, the condition (water
content) of the oil is determined. The

assessment of bushings, instrument
transformers, cables and rotating
machines.
Other applications include verification of
proper drying for a new transformer at

The extended measurement range of 5
kHz down to 50 µHz, allows the DIRANA to
discriminate between moisture in the oil,
insulation geometry and paper.
The result is independent of moisture
equilibrium and insulation temperature.
By combining the time and frequency
domain methods (PDC and FDS), the
DIRANA achieves superior speed that
halves conventional
measurement times.

accurate than traditional
oil sampling, as
compensation for
equilibrium conditions
and the use of
equilibrium diagrams are
no longer required.
The DIRANA's assessment
is based on a database
containing data from
measurements of real oilpaper-insulation
systems
with varying moisture
content and oil/paper

On this basis, the
measurement results are
automatically analysed and the moisture
content is then classified according to IEC
60 422 between the extremes ‘dry’ and
‘extremely wet’.
Additionally, the software compensates
for conductive ageing byproducts in the
oil and is therefore well-suited for older
transformers.
A new ‘Pre-Measurement Check’ feature
analyses the capacitance, signal-to-noise
ratio and noise current to ensure a
successful test.
The software also recognises when
sufficient data has been gathered and the
test can be stopped. Therefore the
measurement time can be minimised.
Training videos are now available that
discuss moisture analysis and test set
operation.

The Tognum Group has won two
orders worth €2.5 m from France
for the supply of gas-engine gensets
to industrial customers.
The car manufacturers Peugeot and
Smart will use the combined heat and
power plants in their factories in
Mülhausen and Hambach in the French
region of Alsace.
Nine cogeneration power plants carrying
the Tognum brand MTU Onsite Energy
have been ordered by SDMO, the French
power plant manufacturer based in Brest.
The orders count among the biggest ever
received in the 30-year history of the
Tognum production site in Augsburg.
The supply scope also includes
maintenance services such as the
provision of spare parts and on-call
technical support for the user.
The gensets built at Tognum’s site in
Augsburg each comprise an MTU gas
engine Type 16V 4000 L62, the generator,
and the control system. The combined

Around 90 of the Powerpacks are earmarked
for local service routes operated
by the state-owned Russian Railways.

significant quantity for wide-gauge rail
systems such as those in Russia, Ukraine
and Lithuania,” Rainer Breidenbach,
member of the executive board of Tognum
AG with responsibility for the business

“The drive concept is tailor-made to
match the rail vehicles produced there
and it meets rail operators’ demands for
high performance, exceptional reliability,
and efficient fuel consumption.”

Since market introduction in 1996, MTU
has supplied more than 4,000 Powerpacks

suit virtually any of the standard vehicle
types.
The customer gets a complete, fully
integrated drive system. Depending on
requirements, a 6-cylinder Model 6H 1800
MTU engine delivers between 315 and 390
kW.
Their extremely shallow design means
MTU Powerpacks are perfectly suited for
underfloor operation in railcars.
Fuel efficiency is another reason why
Metrowagonmash chooses them for the
railcars it builds for its customers. Their
excellent acceleration, low life-cycle
costs and low noise and vibration levels
are further decisive factors in that choice,

For the past four years a+f GmbH has
been focussing on the development
of its SunCarrier tracking system for
industrial-scale solar parks. All its hard
work has appeared to have paid off.
It’s impressive, energy-efficient and easy
to install. The SunCarrier models and sizes
currently available are all based on the
concept of a single-axis tracking system
which permanently aligns the module
surface to the sun position via the vertical
axis.
This ensures an optimal angle of
incidence for the sunlight and the
company claims this generates an
additional yield of up to 35% compared
with conventional solutions available on
the market, reports the company.
Depending on the module type, an output
of up to 24 kWp can be installed on
the module surface of around 120 square
metres.
The SunCarrier 120 complements the
SunCarrier series portfolio with its
product specifications. Due to its reduced
height of only 4.3 metres, the system can
be implemented easily in countries with
installation height restrictions. The low
height also results in a reduced wind load,
enabling an increased focus on lightweight

Unveiled at last month’s Intersolar Europe 2010 in Munich was a+f GmbH’s new SunCarrier
tracking system which can produce an additional energy yield of up to 35% compared with
conventional PV solutions available on the market. WIP has the story.

products of the SunCarrier series – can be
equipped with solar modules from the
most various manufacturers.
The system is especially suited for a
deployment between the 25th and 55th
northern and southern latitude. The
system can be installed individually or in
large-scale solar parks.
The required drive for the tracking is
provided through a planetary gear (engine

output of 0.37 kW, with brake, drive
ratio: 1:1,595, form-locked chain wheel
on anchor chain).
The power input amounts to 0.40
kWh/day, which roughly corresponds to
the power requirements for a halfwashing
machine load.
Like other SunCarrier models, the
SunCarrier 120 is not equipped with
sensible tracking sensors. Instead, a
maintenance-free computer-assisted
control was implemented.
The control receives the signals from an
electronic clock, an incremental encoder
between the gear and the drive engine as
well as mechanical feelers, enabling the
system to ensure an accurate alignment
with the current sun position.
Like all models offered by a+f GmbH,
the SunCarrier 120 is extremely robust
and can withstand wind speeds of up to
121.3 km/h according to the national UNI
EN1991-1:2005-07 standard. The
SunCarrier 120 remains operational when
other systems have already moved to the
safety position, says the manufacturer.

Heliatek’s improved efficiency solar-cellbreakthrough
As part of a joint research project carried out together with the
Technical University of Dresden's Institute of Applied Photo-Physics,
the Dresden-based Heliatek GmbH has achieved a breakthrough in
organic solar-cell efficiency. With a certified efficiency of 7.7 % over
an active area of 1.1 cm2, a new record has been set for organic
solar cells. The previous highest certified value for organic solar cells
with practical relevance was 6.1%. It too was set by Heliatek,
together with its partners, the IAPP and BASF.
‘p-i-n Tandem Cell Technology’ developed and patented by the
partner companies forms the basis for this success. This involves a
combination of two technologies: doped organic materials (‘p-i-n
technology’) and the stacking of solar cells (‘tandem cells’).
The record-breaking cell uses organic colouring agents specially
optimised for use in solar cells, whereby one agent absorbs the
short-wave portion of sunlight (blue and green light) while the other
absorbs the long-wave portion (red and near-infrared light). The
absorbers were developed by Heliatek and its investor, BASF
(Ludwigshafen). Doped organic materials, which form the basis of the
pin technology,

400 battery systems by Cellstrom GmbH
The cellcube FB 10-100 and the cellcube FB 200-400 are two new
systems which allow customers to use power produced from
alternative energy carriers independently and flexibly. The cellcube
FB 10-100 can be charged and discharged with up to 10 kW, providing
up to 100 kWh (kilowatt hours) of energy. The cellcube 200/400
features an output of up to 200 kW and a maximum storage capacity
of 400 kWh. Using a large battery, eight electric cars can be
‘refuelled’ up to 80% simultaneously in less than 10 minutes, or 80
four-person households can be supplied with electricity all night
long.
The battery systems enable a direct 24-hour a day power supply and
offer high storage stability in combination with fast response times.
These systems are sutiable for various applications - e.g. power
supply for load levelling/peak balancing, back-up power supplies or
storage facilities for solar and wind power charging facilities. They
are a perfect addition to stand-alone solutions in the renewable
energies sector, reports a+f.
The energy storage systems are
based on the principle of flow
batteries and use vanadium salts
in electrolytes (vanadium redox
flow-batteries). These salts are
available in low concentration
a.o. in the soil as well as in
plants and minerals. ‘The liquid
energy carriers do not age and can be reused for unlimited periods’,
claims the manufacturer. Conventional batteries are subject to wear
due to the loss of reactive material. Vanadium low batteries contain
no harmful substances such as lead, cadmium, or mercury.
The total discharge performance is essential for using batteries in
solar applications: It can have a significant impact on their useful
life.The vanadium technology enables a virtually unlimited number of
charging/discharging cycles, resulting in an expected life time of
around 20 years. Only the stacks should be replaced after ten years,
