HOUSING FAIRLINTULA – a Village in a Garden CityThe Lintula area, situated in northern <strong>Valkeakoski</strong> about 3 km fromthe city centre, is a new residential area. The first homes in Lintulahave risen at the housing fair site. Lintula is situated near fast road connections,less than a 30 minute drive from Tampere.The Traditional, Life cycle, Scenic, Sun and Innovation theme blocksin the village-like fair area are joined together by the drive-through collectorroad Linnunrata (Milky Way) as well as by pedestrian and bicyclepaths and recreational areas.Lintula is a real strawberry place for families with children who appreciatesafety, peaceful natural surroundings, easy everyday life and goodneighbourhood services and recreational areas.– 10 –


SPACIOUS AND MULTI-FACETED LIVINGThe lush Lintula housing fair area is a combination of bothlevel field areas and wooded plots with sharp slopes. Theaverage plot size of 1300 m 2 allows the construction ofboth one- and two-storey houses as well as varied landscapingsolutions.The site plan and local building specifications permitthe construction of houses of varying shapes and colours.The village-like atmosphere is enhanced by the joint roofshapes and colours in the groups of buildings in each block.The specifications concerning the placement of houses andoutbuildings on the plots are exceptionally liberal.Close to Nature,Near ServicesThere are about 40 homes on displayat the 25-hectare fair site. The entire60-hectare Lintula area will offer housingfor 500 – 600 residents in morethan a hundred detached houses andabout one hundred apartments in smallhousing associations.In the vicinity of Lintula, there is a newtraining, research and business centre.The area, named <strong>Valkeakoski</strong> Campus,houses e.g. a new upper secondaryschool (see pages 30 –31). HOUSING FAIRSolutions and InnovationsIN ENERGY-EFFICIENT CONSTRUCTIONValo (Light) is a class ‘A’ lowenergyhouse heated with groundheat. The sunny building site isalso utilized in many ways.The exhibitor is Koskisen OyTaloteollisuus/Herrala-talot.The built environment consumes nearly half of all energy. Itsshare of emissions is equally large. The escalating climate changenecessitates significant improvements in the ecological and energyefficiency of built environments.Energy efficiency is one of the main themes at the <strong>Valkeakoski</strong>Housing Fair. The Lintula housing fair area in the growing northernpart of the city is a natural addition to the urban structure of<strong>Valkeakoski</strong>. The many options in energy-efficient constructionare visibly showcased at the fair.Two of the most interesting homes at the housing fair are passivehouses, in which heating energy consumption is only 20–25 percentcompared to the consumption of a new conventional house.The well-insulated and completely airtight houses have controlledair renewal to ensure healthy room air.In addition, there are several low-energy houses at the fair.About half of the houses have a class ‘A’ energy rating. Manybuilders have chosen to heat their houses with the environmentallyfriendly ground heat. Also showcased are air source heatpumps and solar energy solutions.– 12 –


Active Solar Heating in the Passive HouseThe TV House is a passive house that utilizes solar energy, the heat fromchimney gases and lost heat from air renewal, appliances, lighting and evenhuman body heat. The heat from exhaust air is also recovered efficiently.One of the specialties at the TV House is the outdoor swimming pool whichis heated by solar energy.The home built by Timo Laine for his family was designed byarchitect Timo Ahonen, partly with the help of a viewers’ vote.The TV House has a brick frame and exterior.The exhibitor is Wienerberger Oy.Jorma Piisinen and Ari Lahtishow on TV and online how apassive house is designed andbuilt. Watch the “Joka kodinasuntomarkkinat” programmeon MTV3 and www.tvtalo.fi.Paroc Lupaus (Promise) is a wooden passivehouse which achieves energy efficiency withoutreducing living comfort. The house was designedfor the Mäkinen family by architect KimmoLylykangas. He and VTT Technical ResearchCentre customer manager Jyri Nieminen aredeveloping a passive house design manualfor architect training. There are moresmall, reasonably priced fast-to-build houses than at most housingfairs. The prices of homes range from 150,000 to a million euros.The fair also displays several spacious one-storey houses.Several different building methods have been applied in the constructionof fair homes. There are houses made of modules, smalland large elements as well as houses built on site. One of the displayedhouses has been built from start to finish by the students ofthe <strong>Valkeakoski</strong> vocational school as a part of their studies.Approximately one half of the builders are house manufacturersor construction companies. The rest are private individuals.Some of them have made turnkey contracts; others have takenan active role in building their own house. Almost all are cooperatingwith a house manufacturer or a construction company.– 14 –

HOUSING FAIRUNIQUE HOMES for Various TastesThe wide range of detached houses at the Lintula housing fairarea includes unique, impressive stone houses.The best-known builder at the housing fair is Mika Kallio, anelite Grand Prix motorcycle racer. This is his first year competingin the MotoGP class.Mika Kallio is building a traditional,390 square metre, class Aenergy efficient Jämerä stone houseon a large hill plot. The Lapillihouse has sunny halls, animpressive staircase, curved baywindows and a luxurious saunasection with a jacuzzi. Thespacious garage was designedand equipped to meet the specialrequirements of the outgoing man.Kallio was born in <strong>Valkeakoski</strong> and lived here for years. Todaythe busy, world-touring Kallio resides in Monaco because of hiswork. ”It is easy to travel to racing events in various parts of theworld from Monaco. If I wasn’t in my current profession, I wouldbe living in <strong>Valkeakoski</strong>. I am grateful that I can spend my fewholidays here. From my summer house I have made boat tripson the waters near the city, and in winter time I have maintainedmy racing touch on an ice track.””All my friends and relatives are here, so it was natural for me tostart building my own holiday home in <strong>Valkeakoski</strong>.” The Lintulahousing fair area attracted Kallio because of its peacefulness,proximity to nature, good connections and services. The fact thatthe area will be finished all at once was also a deciding factor.– 16 –


Brothers Mikko and OlliTähtinen are building handsomehomes in Lintula. Although verydifferent from each other, bothprojects emphasize user-friendlydesign, high-quality professionalconstruction and sensible energyeconomy.Villa Aurora is Mikko’s American style house whichutilizes both traditional craftsmanship and state-ofthe-arttechnology.Onninkoto is Olli’s modern but warm and welcominghome. The two-storey stone house, built on a steep slope,was designed as the first home for a young bachelor.The Myresjöhus houseis build by Rakennusalfa Oy.Maxit Ålesundis a stone house with a Norwegiantouch. This summer,the lush area willglow with colours.LANDSCAPING on Nature’s TermsThe housing fair at Lintula invests in landscaping, emphasizingnatural and village-like environments. Among other attractions,a scenic wetland area, constructed by widening and moulding aditch flowing across a crop field, brings colour to the area.Stones were laid and more than 15,000 aquatic and shore plantsplanted on the beds of the wetland area. In the centre of the fairsite there is an activity park with various play and exercise facilities,fields for ball games and natural stone benches.Cosy yardson large plots of landThe large plots of land atthe housing fair offer anexcellent setting for impressive,versatile gardens.Art Flourishes at the Magic ParkThe wooded Magic park (“Taikatilukset”) is situated by the sideof the Linnunrata collector road. The park was designed as ajoint project of <strong>Valkeakoski</strong> Art school, Handicraft school and theHAMK University of Applied Sciences landscape design students.Various themes such as a path, a wall, an ancient lakeshore– 18 –


The brick gate at the Magic park was designed and built by the studentsof <strong>Valkeakoski</strong> Art school.and water were constructed in the area according to projectplans. Blue cornflowers will be planted in the surrounding fieldarea to symbolize water.During the housing fair, art works by the 6–18 year old studentsof the <strong>Valkeakoski</strong> Art school and Handicraft school will be displayedat the Magic park.Landscape Design Contest for StudentsTwo yards will be constructed at the housing fair according towinning designs in a student landscape design contest. The contestwas aimed toward the HAMK University of Applied Scienceslandscape design students. The students were invited todesign yards using different styles and ideas and taking into considerationthe architecture of the houses.Both natural andplanted flowers growin the scenic fieldarea in the centre ofthe housing fair site.– 19 –

Today the museum displays his works alongwith the lifestyle and living environment of his era. Snellman, one of the most important Finnish thinkers ofthe 19th century. It burnt down in 1929, and was reconsecratedin 1933. The latest restoration took place in 1998–1999. Thestained glass windows and the paintings in the ceiling were doneby well-known local artist Kalle Carlstedt and the reliefs by anotherlocal artist, Aukusti Veuro.
