RetirementRetirement income for workers and their spouses can start asearly as age 62 (monthly benefits are permanently reduced if theworker or spouse choose to start collecting benefits before age65.) When you apply for Social Security Benefits, you shouldhave: 1) your Social Security; 2) Pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> your age, a BirthCertificate or Baptismal Certificate; 3) your Marriage Certificate ifyou are applying for wife’s, widow’s or widower’s benefits; 4) yourW-2 forms for the last two years <strong>of</strong> employment or a copy <strong>of</strong> yourlast two Federal income tax returns if you were self-employed.Supplemental Security <strong>In</strong>come (SSI)Supplemental Security <strong>In</strong>come (SSI) is a Federal Program forpeople 65 and older or blind/disabled individuals who havelimited income and resources. To qualify, an individual isallowed up to $2,000 in liquid assets and a couple may have upto $3,000. The ownership <strong>of</strong> a home, care and ordinaryhousehold furnishings are not counted as assets. You mustprovide pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> your income and assets. If you are eligible toreceive SSI payments, you will automatically receive MedicalAssistance Health <strong>In</strong>surance (Medicaid). Some people qualifyfor both regular Social Security benefits and SSI, some for SocialSecurity only, and some for SSI only.Survivor’s <strong>In</strong>suranceSurvivor’s benefits are available to families <strong>of</strong> insured workerswho die at any age.
