From theKeeper’s BlogIf you haven’t visited the Keeper’s Blog onmemphiszoo.org in a while, you’re missinggreat updates like these from the keepersthemselves. Here’s what zookeeper AdrienneSaunders recently wrote about the latesthappenings in Animals of the Night.ArmadillosIn 2009, a new resident arrived atthe Animals of the Night building. Weacquired “Beau,” a male, six-bandedarmadillo (Euphractus sexcinctus), tobreed with our female “Jackie.”On August 18, a tiny newborn armadillowas seen just outside of Jackie’slog (six-banded armadillos like to sleepinside hollow logs), but where wasJackie? She was fast asleep inside of herlog, not taking care of her new baby. Thekeepers went in and placed the baby withhis mom.One of the keepers kept a close eyeon mom and baby for a few hours, butJackie never showed much interest or triedto nurse her little one. The decision wasmade for the keepers to step in and become“mothers” to the baby armadillo. Wehave had experience over the years raisingseveral babies at Animals of the Night,so we did some research on hand-raisingbaby armadillos. We had to figure out what to feed him,how much and how often. We also hadto decide how he should be housed. Forthe first 15 days, he had to be fed everytwo to three hours, so we took him homewith us every night. We kept him in anincubator so that he was in a warm andhumid environment. When he was born, his eyes were shut, and they did not openuntil he was about a month old. He alsohad no hair, and his shell was soft. Inother words, he was completely helpless. He ate well and steadily gained weight.Another big milestone was reached atone month: we started giving him solidfood. We started off with mashed upbanana, cooked sweet potato and drydog food soaked in his formula. He wasnot crazy about the dog food (whichmany zoo animals enjoy in their balanceddiet), but he loved the banana! Weset up a den in an off-exhibit area withlots of wood shavings and his ownhollow log.Unfortunately, he will not be stayinghere at the Zoo. Six-banded armadillosare in high demand at zoos in the U.S.“For the first 15 days he had to be fed every twoto three hours, so we took him home with us atnight. We all feltthat since he was going to be leaving usat such a young age that his newkeepers should get to be the ones toname him. But he will always be Dillto me.Read more keeperblogs like this one atmemphiszoo.org.Keeper AdrienneSaunders bottlefeeds this babyarmadillo.5
