Specific APMT requirements exist for music therapists as follows:<br />

Personal <strong>Therapy</strong> for <strong>Music</strong> Therapists<br />

Students must be in weekly individual therapy to run concurrently<br />

with the course.<br />

This must be with either:<br />

A music or arts therapist qualified for a minimum <strong>of</strong> 5 years or-<br />

An accredited member <strong>of</strong> the UKCP, BCP or BAC (any other<br />

arrangement must be in consultation with course head.)<br />

Clinical Skills and Knowledge<br />

A basic grounding is required in:<br />

Normal human development; normal and abnormal psychology;<br />

normal and<br />

abnormal human communication and language development; mental<br />

illness,<br />

psychiatric assessment and treatment.<br />

Practical <strong>Music</strong> <strong>Therapy</strong> Skills Required to be taught (summary)<br />

- Clinical improvisation<br />

- Observation and recording <strong>of</strong> musical and other behaviour,<br />

assessment, and diagnosis.<br />

- <strong>Music</strong>al and psychological analysis with a view to subsequent<br />

treatment<br />

- A wide variety <strong>of</strong> music therapy techniques<br />

- Planning, implementing, effectively completing and terminating<br />

individual and group treatment<br />

<strong>Music</strong> Skills and Knowledge Required:<br />

- Knowledge <strong>of</strong> a range <strong>of</strong> musical cultures, practical skill and<br />

knowledge.<br />

- A high level <strong>of</strong> performance on at least one instrument; and<br />

ability to use voice<br />

flexibly<br />

- Keyboard skills if not specialising in a harmonic instrument<br />

Ability to improvise fluently and flexibly in a variety <strong>of</strong> emotional<br />

areas, and tonal<br />

and atonal idioms<br />

- Highly developed aural awareness<br />

- The ability to make arrangements for unconventional<br />

combinations <strong>of</strong> instruments requiring variable or minimal levels<br />

<strong>of</strong> playing pr<strong>of</strong>iciency<br />
