Drive a bus, coachor lorry for a living?Stay on <strong>the</strong> right side<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> law.Pr<strong>of</strong>essional bus, coach and lorry drivers are now legally required to hold<strong>the</strong> Driver Certificate <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Competence (CPC) in order todrive for a living.If you have <strong>be</strong>en driving for a while (<strong>be</strong>fore 10 Septem<strong>be</strong>r 2008 for busand coach drivers and <strong>be</strong>fore 10 Septem<strong>be</strong>r 2009 for lorry drivers) youhave ‘acquired rights’ that last for fi ve years from those dates. If you’re an‘acquired rights’ driver and want to continue driving pr<strong>of</strong>essionally afterSeptem<strong>be</strong>r 2013 (bus and coach) or Septem<strong>be</strong>r 2014 (lorry) you’ll need toobtain a Driver CPC. You’ll need to do this by completing 35 hours periodictraining <strong>be</strong>fore <strong>the</strong>se dates.Once you’ve completed your 35 hours training you’ll <strong>be</strong> sent a DriverQualifi cation Card (DQC) to prove you hold <strong>the</strong> Driver CPC.
