2010 OHA CONVENTIONGeorgian CollegeBarrie, OntarioAugust 13 & 14, 2010Delegates at workDoor-prize excitement121

A Message From KeesThis year has been one of challenges, excitement and pleasure as I traveledthroughout the province as President ofthe Ontario Horticultural Association. When I traveled to the differentAnnual General Meetings, I learnedhow districts and societies conductbusiness. Their prize books providedme with knowledge of categories forexhibits for shows as well as activitiessuch as flower shows, garden toursand interesting out of town speakers. Many good ideas were shared at thesemeetings on how they kept theirsocieties active. Some societies were celebratingmemorable anniversaries this yearand it was my pleasure to attendtwo of these events. The Milton andDistrict Horticultural Society wascelebrating their 100th anniversaryand I was asked to attend their Annual General Meeting on April 24 to represent theOntario Horticultural Society. The theme of the day was “Celebrating our Heritage- 100 Years and Growing.” This event brought together members of the CarolinianDistrict Six. It was my pleasure to be part of this day, bring greetings and presentthem with a “100 Year Certificate” as well as congratulations from the OHA. TheMilton and District Horticultural Society put on a great day, one to be proud of.Their speakers were very informative and flower show was outstanding. Anothersuch event was the Clifford and District Horticultural Society’s celebration “50Years of Blossoming with Pride” held on July 17. Denis Flanagan was the keynotespeaker and he shared new horticultural trends with us. My address was focusedmainly on volunteering in the community through horticulture. I presented thissociety with a “50 Year Certificate” and brought congratulations from the Executiveand the Board of Directors. One of my prime objectives this year was for the OHA to better communicate thegoals, its mission and how the districts and their societies are an integral part ofthe association. I see this challenge has been addressed in the Trillium Newsletter. After consideration, the Board of Directors agreed to implement guidelines foractive judging. In the Ontario Horticultural Association Directors’ Manual, wehave introduced the Judges’ Log. For renewal of a three-year membership as an124

active judge the requirements are as follows: judging a minimum of one show, two exhibiting credits, and any two of the following; instructing in design andhorticulture, presenting a horticulture and design program, entering another showi.e. Agricultural Fair show, and attending workshops. I think it is important to useOHA accredited judges who have been trained, taken recognized courses and areaware of OHA judging standards to judge at local horticultural shows. The application process for societies and individuals for Award Recognitions hasalso been addressed this year. Articles have appeared in the Trillium Newsletteroutlining the process to follow. Applications for youth, leadership and years ofparticipation in a society are some of the awards available to societies. These aresome of the accomplishments of 2010.There were times when my health did not permit me to travel and both VickieWiemer and Carol Dunk assisted me greatly by attending OHA functions. Thankyou ladies for representing the OHA with your usual grace and knowledge. I wouldalso like to thank you for the support you have provided to me throughout the year.Mr. Ken Fink, Past President, volunteered to looked after scheduling of the 2010Annual General Meetings representation for the Executive Officers. Ken alsorepresented the OHA throughout the province and at anniversaries of HorticulturalSocieties. This helped out greatly and for this I thank you Ken.I would also like to acknowledge Mrs. Janet Moyser, Secretary who correspondedwith the districts and societies throughout the year, kept our meetings on track andarranged for the plaques and certificates to be presented at various functions. Welldone, thank you Janet.Mrs. Sharon Hill, our reliable Treasurer, looked after our financial needs by alwayskeeping costs in check including convention costs and insurance coverage at alllevels of the OHA. Thank you Sharon for your hard work. This year, with the convention held in Barrie, Carol Dunk was instrumental inthe planning and organizing of the event. Thank you Carol, your dedication andorganizational skills never cease to amaze me. You have given unselfishly of yourtime and have ensured that every detail is looked after. I would like to extend myappreciation for your hard work and for providing us with the leadership for theconvention. In closing, I would like to say thank you to the 19 District Directors who haveprovided valuable input and worked as team players at the board meetings heldduring the year. To the Executive Officers, thank you for making this year a specialyear to remember. Your dedication has not gone unnoticed. My sincere thanks to all of you.Kees StrylandAugust, 2010125
