In particular, inthe face of adversity, the desire to look good still remains.Nowhere is this more apt than for women coping with thevisible side-effects of cancer treatments. In essence, this is the thinking behind theLook Good…Feel Better Programme, one of the servicesin the UK helping to support women with cancer. It offers free make-up workshops through a network ofover 50 hospitals and cancer support centres nationwide. The charity, first introduced in 1994 by the Cosmetic, Toiletryand Perfumery Association, is supported by many differentcompanies and brands in the Beauty Industry, who donate funds, products and the expertise of their staff. After the shock of being diagnosed with cancer, many womenare then devastated by the distressing side-effects of theirtreatment, some of which can dramatically change theirappearance and body image - loss of hair, eyebrows andeyelashes can be particularly difficult to cope with.Look Good…Feel Better helps these women in avery practical and positive way.Trained beauty professionals volunteer their time and expertiseto help women combat the visible side-effects of treatment. The two hour workshops are informative and livelybut most of all, fun - making this particular visitto hospital something to look forward to.Registered Charity No.1031728 Registered in England 2850925LGFB 8p DLO V09/09.indd 2-5 21/09/2009 11:28

I look fantastic and can’t wait to go home and showmy family - I look like me again. Thank you.“Becky Robinson, LGFB Beneficiary“Cancer treatment can be incredibly demoralising and energysappingbut knowing I can still look my best has really helped meget through it.”Justine Jones-Lloyd, LGFB BeneficiaryThe Beauty Industrysupporting womenwith cancer• LGFB is operational in 20 countries worldwide• In the UK, the Programme is available in over 50 locations• Over 60,000 women have benefited from its unique service, with around 8,500 women attending workshops each year• There are over 40 member companies of the Cosmetic,Toiletry and Perfumery Foundation, who support the charityby donating funds, products and the expertise of their staff• Over 900 volunteer beauticians are involved in theProgramme, many of whom work for major cosmeticcompanies in department stores close to hospitals wherethe workshops take place• Around 150 freelance consultants also play an invaluablerole in the Programme• Every year over 150,000 products are generously donated bythe Beauty Industry for workshop gift bags• The Programme is ‘product neutral’, free and entirelynon-medicalBelieving in ‘the feel good factor’LGFB receives many letters and positive comments which beartestimony to the basic thinking behind the Programme - ifyou look good, it can help you feel better - a fact recognisedby the different medical professionals involved in patients’care and treatment.“I always know when my patients have been along to a LGFBsession because the next time I see them, they are lookinggreat and obviously feeling very much more positive andconfident.”Dr. Stephen Houston, Consultant Medical Oncologist, The Royal Surrey Hospital.“I had seen the positive effects of LGFB workshops on mypatients for many years, but nothing prepared me for beingdiagnosed myself. You don’t realise how vulnerable womenfeel when they look into a mirror and see a stranger staringback. Being shown simple make-up skills made me feel ableto go out looking as ‘normal’ as possible.”Professor Hilary Thomas, Consultant Oncologist and LGFB beneficiary.Keeping up appearancesFeeling lonely, frightened and alienated is how many womendescribe the experience of going through treatment. Attendinga LGFB workshop provides a real source of support, bringingtogether small groups of 10-12 women in a relaxing andenjoyable environment. With the help and encouragement ofLGFB beauty consultants, the two-hour sessions are enjoyable, morale boosting and informative. Women leave the sessionslaughing, looking fantastic and readyto face the world again.“Having gone through treatment for breast cancer myself,I know what these ladies are going through. When you’ve lost your hair, eyebrows and eyelashesyou don’t feel you can get any lower, but aftera LGFB session, everyone comes out happy, smiling and looking a million dollars. It’s wonderful to see and I’m pleasedto be able to help with thesegreat workshops.”Annette Finlay-Price, Beauty Consultantand LGFB Co-ordinator (Edinburgh)IMPORTANT NOTICE If you take part in the Look Good…Feel Better Programme you will receive a package ofproducts which are supplied free of charge by their manufacturers.
