MOV CHOKES

TECHNOLOGY TO SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMSGreater Control ThroughTechnologyCameron Willis chokes are partof a wide range of products offeredby the Cameron Division of CooperCameron Corporation.The Cameron Willis MOV andits four special trim designs are examplesof the many ways the companyhas solved customer problemsthroughout the years. In addition,the Cameron Willis product lineexemplifies the many ways CameronWillis is committed to the applicationof state-of-the-art technology to helpyou control production costs.SD24711Research into materials has alsohelped Cameron Willis to controlthe effects of cavitation, erosion andfreezing – three of the greatestenemies to efficient flow controloperations. Such research provides anunprecedented database from whichwe can select the proper materialsand alloys for specific choke applications.Continuing investigations todetermine the relative erosion,abrasion, and cavitation resistancecharacteristic of materials allowsCameron Willis to develop the mostwear resistant trim in the industry.The effects of abrasion, erosionand cavitation can be reduced byapplying hardfacing to the interiorsurfaces of the choke outlet or byusing an extended wear sleeve in theoutlet.Our research has shown thatspecific grades of tungsten-carbideare very effective at reducing erosionwear while Stellite ® is most resistantto the destructive consequences ofcavitation.Combined with the proper discdesign and valve/orifice sizing, wecan help you greatly prolong thewear life of the valve.SizingAt Cameron Willis, we feel avalve can only be as good as itssizing. That’s why we spend the extratime with you up front to make sureyour MOV is sized correctly for yourparticular application.Using the Cameron Willis FlowLoop, a computerized testing facilitythat allows us to study flow dynamicsand determine flow capacity, we’vedeveloped three systems that providethe most accurate trim/valve sizingavailable today. Cameron Willis chokesizing software provides the mostprecise data from state-of-the-artknowledge and information.The net result of these systems isa technically superior valve with amaximized service life.SD24712TABLE OF CONTENTSSD24562In addition to testing chokes over a wide range ofpressures, Cameron Willis measures flow rates andnoise in a flow loop per ISA specifications.SD24562Cameron Willis has an extensive erosion test facilitywith specially designed equipment yielding highdifferential pressure capabilities, as well as variableabrasive content flow.Technology ToSolve Your Problems . . . . . . . . . .1, 2The Multi-Faceted,Multiple Orifice Valve . . . . . . . . .3, 4Actuation . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .5, 6MC10 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .7, 8MC20 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .9, 10M1A . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .11, 12M2 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .13, 14M3 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .15, 16M3G . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .17, 18M4 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .19, 20M6 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .21, 22MOV Positive Choke . . . . . . . .23, 24Technical Reference Charts . . . . . .251

StylesCameron Willis classifies theirMOV’s into four basic styles dependingupon the kind of service needed:1. Style 0 – Standard ServiceStandard service valves are thelowest cost choke styles. They generallyare intended for sweet crude oil, deaerated water, sweet natural gas,and other non-corrosive fluids.2. Style 8 – Sour ServiceIn addition to the requirementsof the standard valve type, the materialsof the pressure containing partsof this style meet the requirements ofNACE MR-01-75. Sour servicechokes are intended for applicationswith H 2 S present as defined by NACEMR-01-75.3. Style 4 – Wet CO 2 ServiceThis type of choke is intended forapplications and service with wet CO 2(sweet or sour) and other applicationswhere 410 or 316 SS is accepted. Allwetted pressure containing parts aremade of stainless steel.4. Style C – Low Temperature/SourServiceIn addition to the requirementsof standard and sour gas servicechokes, the requirements of API spec.6A are met. This adds Charpy Impacttesting of materials for pressure containingparts. These valves areintended for cold (-50°F) flow and/orambient conditions, with or withoutsour service.Special Shapes For SpecialJobsThe purpose of the MOV is toprovide accurate, calibrated flowcontrol and increased choke servicelife in all applications includingerosive conditions. Toward that goal, new disc designs have been requiredto meet new and greater demands ofbetter rangeability, higher capacityand increasinglysevere conditions. These new discdesigns revolve around altering thenormally round orifice shapes on thediscs to adapt them for special conditions.Extended Range TrimFully openedThrottlingFully closedAs an example, in a water injectionapplication on the North Slopeof Alaska, an oil company required alarge valve that could control flowthe same way a small valve does. Aspecial trim was designed with spiralshaped holes. This unusually highrangeability trim solved the problemand joined the Cameron Willis MOVline as our Extended Range Trim.Pie-Shaped TrimTo tackle the problem of increasingflow capacity without increasingchoke body size, Cameron Willisengineers camer up with the PieShaped Trim. By enlarging the holesto resemble a “slice” of pie, this trimmaximizes flow volume (Cv) whileminimizing nominal body size. Thisreduces costs normally incurred byusing a larger nominal body.Drilling Choke TrimDrilling conditions call for stillanother special type of MOV trim. With practically every drilling job, large cuttings come up the casingwith the mud. The cuttings canblock the throttling restriction inmany chokes. However, theCameron Willis’ Drilling Choke Trimis specially designed for mud service.Utilizing a half-moon shaped hole, the Cameron Willis Drilling ChokeTrim rotates through a control rangefrom full open to 100% closure in180°. This design delivers control soreliable that the Cameron WillisDrilling Choke outperforms everyother design for well killing and pressurecontrol, especially in severeservice involving H 2 S, abrasive fluidsand high pressures.2

MULTI-FACETED, MULTIPLE ORIFICES VALVEOperation and FeaturesSD24713For over five decades theCameron Willis Multiple OrificeValve (MOV) has set the standardfor precision flow control in a widevariety of applications all over theworld. As one of Cameron Willisproducts’ three basic choke technologies– which include Control Chokesand Needle and Seat Chokes – theMOV is recognized for its highreliability and superior performance. The term “multiple orifice” refersto the exclusive design of the MOV,which utilizes a set of adjacent discs, each of which contains a pair ofcircular openings or “orifices” (othershapes may be used for custom applications). The two discs are diamondlapped on the mating surfaces totolerances near two light bands offlatness. This allows for extremelyprecise shutoff and flow regulation. In fact, most MOV chokes meet therequirements of ANSI B104 Class IVshutoff as standard. As one disc is rotated withrespect to the other, the flow area isenlarged from closed to fully open, effecting a change in the flowingvolume of liquid and /or gas passingthrough the choke. Differentialpressures across the discs hold themtogether. There are no loose orunsupported parts to cause vibration, noise or fatigue failures. Theexposed portion of the disc’s surfaceis wiped clean of foreign depositseach time the valve is rotated.Rotational trim movement also eliminatesproblems associated withasphaltines. These types of fluidstend to solidify on linear motion trim, limiting throttling capabilities. The circular shape of the MOV’sstandard flow disc offers a smallerwearing surface. Also, there is nointerfacing shape in the center of theflow area. The net result is less wearon the throttling and shutoff areaand a more accurate, calibrated flowrate which means a greatly extendedservice life with very little downtimefor maintenance.FLOW PERCENT100806040200Another benefit of the MOV’sunique design which adds to itsservice life is a second set of orificewearing edges available by simplyrotating the discs in the oppositedirection. Standard MOV discs aremade of ceramic. Tungsten carbidediscs are offered for extreme erosiveservices and very high pressure drops.Due to simplicity in design, thereare very few wear components to bereplaced when the choke must beserviced, resulting ease of field maintenance, less downtime and reducedoperational costs.Arrow indicates relative position of front disc.LINEARFully closedThrottling20 40 60 80 100Dead band shutoff area provided by the front disc overlapping the backdisc holes.Fully opened3

ACTUATIONSD24719The actuation of MOVs cantake the form of a manual barhandle, handwheel gear operator, pneumatic, hydraulic, electric orautomatic stepping actuator. AnyMOV may be actuated and fieldconversion from manual to actuatedis possible on most models.Pneumatic ActuatorsPneumatic actuators are applicableto all of the Cameron Willis MOVchoke line. They are especially effectivefor economical automatedcontrol of the M2 and larger chokevalves. Accessories such as positioners, limit switches, filter regulators, local pressure controllers and solenoidvalves etc. are available withpneumatic actuators.Selecting the most economicalsize of actuator is determined primarilyby the turning torque required toeffectively operate the choke.Diaphragm actuators are preferredon many applications as they aremore economical than piston types, and they require only 35 psi linepressure to operate. Piston actuatorsare required if the torque required isin excess of (or near) the maximumcapabilities of the diaphragm actuators.Your Cameron Willis representativecan assist you in selection of theproper pneumatic actuator for yourMOV application. Cameron WillisMOV chokes are easily adapted topneumatic actuation using ruggedlyconstructed actuator adapters.Electric ActuatorsElectric actuators are most popularfor applications on smaller MOVchokes such as the MC10, M1A andM2. These chokes are designed withactuation in mind and, as such, providefor an extremely compact andsimple installation.Electric actuated MOV chokesare especially applicable to fieldautomated production installationsusing closed loop computer controlsystems. Specific advantages include:• Control capability over a widerange of flow rates.• Capable of electronicallycontrolled positioning.• Nearly linear increasing flow ratewith increasing valve opening.• Dynamic stability at all pressuredrop and flow rate conditions.• Available valve trim to allow fordifferent ranges of flow rateswhile using the same actuator, valve body and control softwaresystem.• Low energy and torque requirementsSD11592Selection of electric actuators isprimarily determined by the choketurning torque required and thespecific control feedback andenvironmental considerations of theinstallation. Cameron Willis electricallyactuated MOV choke valves canbe provided with adjustable travelstops, a potentiometer for remotevalve position readout, electronicspeed control, weather proof andexplosion proof housings, andmanual override.5
