Batistagets thejumpon hisrivalsPopular Albion Park track photographerCOREY PEARCE caught this graphic picof Batista hurdling a tap on the inside ofthe running rail during a recent race atheadquarters. The new stewards room at the straighttrack capital Capalaba is completed at longlast.During a recent appeal hearing, stewards were criticised for the lack offacilities available to stewards andlicensees during race meetings.Capalaba has never had a facility assuch and it will be a welcome change onrace days to conduct business. To the best of my knowledge there isno truth to the rumour that the Club willmoonlight the building as Chicka's BaitShop during the week.Let me straighten out what appearsconfusion surrounding kennel securityafter the completion of race meetings. All race clubs supply security for amaximum of 20 minutes after the last raceto allow greyhounds to be removed fromthe kennels.Staff will remain on duty as long asswab greyhounds remain in the swabkennels. The problem develops at clubs wheretrials are conducted after the race meetingis completed and trainers remain to trialgreyhounds or simply watch the trials.Clubs who are already under pressureto restrain their running costs cannot beexpected to pay staff while trainers sit upat the bar or stay to watch trials. So be aware, 20 minutes after the lastrace kennel staff will cease duty and thegreyhounds in the kennel block are yourresponsibility.Swab greyhounds will always havesecurity provided until the sample is taken.A recent incident in the catching penat Townsville would have been worthseeing.A greyhound declared hard to catchwas about to be collared by the twocatchers provided to do the job.One was a leading trainer in Townsvillefor many years, and his assistantTownsville’s leading “catcher”.The greyhounds entered the catchingarea after the race and the leading“catcher" was a little slow off the markDanny RyanRenzo Park ComplexNew!Chairman of Stewardsand received a little encouragement frombehind from the leading trainer. The leading “catcher” lost his footingand finished up on the ground among thedogs.Lucky the winner of the race wasn’t aswab dog as “they say” he licked the“catcher” on a number of occasions, wouldn’t have returned positive to alcohol, that’s for sure, perhaps football liniment.CoveringGrafton - CasinoAreastoGold CoastBrisbaneToowoombaChairman of the Board produced aclassic at the last Board Meeting.Follow this if you can.Things we know we knowThings we know we made upThings we forgot we made upThings we forgot we knewAs we know there are known knowsThere are things we know we knowWe also know there are knownunknownsThat is to say we know there are somethings we do not knowBut there are also unknown unknowns, the ones we don’t know you don’t knowThe more you know the more you don’tknow you don’t knowIt’s what you don’t know you don’tknow. As an extension of Renzo Park Rearing and Spelling Complex, we are now offeringa transport service for your valuable animals.RenzoParkPET TRANSPORT SERVICE* Pick-up Grafton Saturday (appointment only)* Leaving Casino sunday (early AM)* Returning Casino Sunday PM* Pick-up and Drop off along the way* Other trips available by arrangementInquiries & Bookings: Peter & Helen SimpsonPh: (02) 66335115 Mob: Peter 0438 792348 Helen 0428 302725The (November, 2006) Journal Page 3

THE time has come forgreyhound racing to vacateAlbion Park and relocate itsheadquarters to a stand alone site. The industry needs to take this courseto get out of what will be a costly andinequitable attempt to redevelop theAlbion Park site. The Greyhound Racing Authoritywould have the support of the vastmajority of the industry. It already has the backing of one ofthe complex's two major tenants, theBrisbane Club, which reluctantly went toAlbion Park in 1992 and has indicatedmore than once it wants out.Greyhound Racing does not need andshould not put up with the proposedredevelopment of Albion Park.Greyhound racing will be the biggestloser, once again, if it goes ahead againstthe industry's wishes.Obviously any need to redevelop thecurrent site would have to includeoptions for both greyhound and harnessracing to stay there with an addedincome stream, and under the new plansthis seems highly unlikely. The proposed gaming and licensedclub proposal by the harness industry ishardly likely to be the huge windfallhoped. So why should we leave, and what arethe alternatives?Any redevelopment of Albion Parkmust provide the two racing codes withmore than just a new racetrack. There is a huge need for an incomestream to fund the industries for manyyears to come. The suggested redevelopment ofAlbion Park, one that has the backing ofPups For Sale40 acre property provides ...* Spacious galloping paddockswith dams and shade* Quality feeding and wormingprogram* Pups taught to lead at anearly age and handledregularly* All pups kennelled beforebreaking in* Excellent facilities availablefor whelping littersZ ammit'sRearing andSpelling Farm'If you want yourpuppy to havegood nutrition, plenty ofgalloping andconstant care, take advantage ofyears ofexperience withinthe industry andgive it the beststart in life onour farm'GEORGEZAMMITFor any information, pedigrees, faxes, e-mails or photosContact George Zammit (07) 54266209Redevelop Albion Park andgreyhound racing will finish ...the harness industry (and why wouldn'tit considering the inequitable nature ofthe plans), would take a number of yearsto complete and will be in a number ofstages.Firstly the entire complex would needto be demolished. The site would then need fill to raiseit to an acceptable level for the futureconstruction of the facilities and theproposed residential and commercialpremises. The Albion Park site is 14 hectares.Under the proposal suggested for theredevelopment of the site, there will beabout four hectares left over after theneeds of the racing area are utilised. But the redevelopment estimationssay to build greyhound and harnessracetracks, kennels, stables, grandstandetc will probably exceed thisBut there is also the Racing ScienceCentre to contend with which is ownedby the Government and is slap bang inthe middle of the site.Greyhound racing, as 50-50 ownersof the Albion Park complex will be upfor HALF of any shortfall between theland sale and the building of the racingcomplex.Remember we said the shift to theback of Albion Park for the racingPupsForSale1 Dog7 BitchesWhelped1-10-06Price$2500 eachThe (November, 2006) Journal Page 8component of thecomplex wasinequitable ... well readon! Both greyhoundracing and harnessracing control bodieswill, as joint tenants atAlbion Park, have toshare in the buildingcosts. While thegrandstand, restaurants, officespace etc will beutilised by both codes, other costings areanything but fair. The greyhoundtrack is 459m incircumference andeight metres wide.Once again the planis to put it in INSIDEthe harness track. The harnessracetrack is 1000m incircumference andmore than 20m wide. The greyhound track will cost a lotless than the harness track to build andluminate.Horse stables take up much moreroom, and thus cost more than a block ofgreyhound kennels. Thus there will be cost disparitybetween the two racing codes. But because greyhound racing is ajoint tenant, it will be forced to payHALF the cost.Did we say the redevelopment wouldbe INEQUITABLE.That's not the half of it.Greyhound racing will be expected tomeet half the operating costs as it doesnow for just 30 percent of the benefits ofany proposed redevelopment at AlbionPark,.INEQUITABLE!If the redevelopment goes ahead, there are still the nagging issues of cotenancyto contend with ... just as there istoday.Catering, trialling (inequitable now),who will run the gaming and clubSire: Black EnforcerDam: Raven Poldar(Moral Standards-Raven Kelly)Raven Poldar (only bitch in litter). Up The CreekBy Journal Editor DAVID BRASCHaspects of the complex etc etc, alreadythere are steps being taken by the AlbionPark Harness Racing club to grab thepoker machine rights. It is suggested greyhound racingwould need at least five hectares to buildits own, new home.So is this an alternative?Either the harness racing industry, ora developer, will be needed to buy outgreyhound racing's half share in theAlbion Park complex. It is believed the thoroughbredindustry is pushing for harness racing tomove to inside Doomben racecourse.Stabling is to be built for thethoroughbred population of Brisbane atEagle Farm and all trackwork will beshifted to that course, leaving Doombenfree, and largely unused. It is believed any sale of the 14hectares at Albion Park could belucrative and the half share of theproceeds would exceed the costs ofdeveloping a new greyhound complex. And could leave the greyhoundindustry with money in the bank, or inshares, or in an income producing asset... all the time reaping a princely harvestfor the industry.Greyhound racing could continue atAlbion Park under its present set-upwhile land is bought, and a new complexestablished.Greyhound racing under theproposed redevelopment of Albion Park, would cease for at least two years untilthe new tracks etc could be built. So what does appear the best scenariofor greyhound racing?Take a payout for Albion Park fromdevelopers and head to our owncomplex.Or stay, be part of an inequitableredevelopment, and have a possible debtwith little hope of getting out of the mirewe are now in?And be further "Up the Creek".Redevelopment problemsThe Albion Park complex has a longracing history. And a long history of problems. To be completely honest, it is a swamp, prone to flooding at high tides.Any buildings there need to be designedto ensure differential settlement does notoccur (as has occurred) and involveconsiderable building costs.Salt water seepage impacts oneverything. The whole area has a massivestormwater problems. The hills surrounding the site feed waterinto the site and drains cannot cope withtorrential rainfall. The site also does not have mainthoroughfare access which would restrictcommercial development. And residential development will havethe disadvantage of proximity to theracetrack, its lighting, sound and smells. No matter how acceptable of the racingcomplex these residents will initially be,how long will that last?Any redevelopment of Albion Parkneeds to produce an income stream forBOTH codes of racing. To suggest it will come from improvedpremises and viewing facilities is at bestwishful thinking.Poker machines may present someincome stream but they will hardly be thewindfall expected as the cost of machinelicenses is massive. It is hoped that this presents a case tobalance the recent articles that haveappeared in the Journal supporting theredevelop at all costs argument.THERMOPEUTICREVOLUTIONARY HEALTH CARE PRODUCTS ...SAFE, NATURAL, NON-TOXIC PAIN RELIEF ...THERMOPEUTIC'S GREYHOUND WRAPS, BOOTS & BLANKETS:100% money backguaranteeRelieve soreness and swelling Reduce muscle spasmsRelieve aches, sprains and other soft tissue injuriesReduce future injuriesIncrease circulationHelp mend injured and overused tendons and ligamentsRemove lactic acidPromote healing andregenerationBreak down fats and toxinsIncrease muscle strengthPrevent muscles from feeling overworkedIncrease energyImprove muscle tonePromote cellregenerationJeff Britton - trainer of Pacific SkyWinner 2004 G1 National Derby. Steve celebrates 20 years at GRAHE'S big and boisterous and a jolly man, known to everyone simply as "Big Steve".Officially he's Steve McGrath, deputychairman of stewards at the GRA, who hasjust celebrated 20 years on the stewards panel."I started on 9-9-86," Steve told TheJournal.McGrath had arrived in town fromRockhampton where he had cut his teeth as asteward from 1982, as chairman stewardsthere from 1984-86.For the past eight years he has been deputychairman behind Danny Ryan.Big Steve loves his job."I've seen some fantastic highlights butnone will top the two Gold Coast Cupvictories by Flying Amy," he told The Journal."To see her win it at the jump, both times, was so exciting. She was at the end of themat before the rest of the field had come outof the boxes."And Pretty Fearless at the Gabba wassomething special as well."McGrath says he has seen a multitude ofchanges in his 20 years at the GRA, andincludes the changing faces among those."The biggest changes have been the lossof tracks but these were done for economicalreasons. I regarded Toowoomba's as the bestracing surface I've seen."But McGrath is a popular man despitehaving to also rule the industry."I never get tired of the funny stories weget told," he said. "I loved the good old daysof betting plunges, the sprint from the mainring to the betting ring at the scoreboard endat the Gabba."Big Steve and wife Debbie have beenmarried 25 years this year. Their son Damienis 10 and an avid sportsman.Damien was named after top jockeyDamien Oliver who has been a long-timefriend of McGrath since he landed theCaulfield-Melbourne Cup double onDoriemus in 1995."We've got a pic of Damien Oliver andour Damien together when our Damien wasjust 18 months old," said Steve.McGrath is a jolly fellow, ever keen for apractical joke ... mostly with racecaller PaulDolan as the victim."For many years the practical jokes weplayed on Dolan, and he played on us, weresomething else," said McGrath."We painted graphite grease on hisheadphones which left Paul with big blackmarks all over his ears and a strip on his head."And we nailed his briefcase to the floorat Beenleigh one day. Dogsy hastried his best to get us backthough."Those days have come to a haltsince the on-course broadcastboxes have been moved too farfrom the stewards rooms at mosttracks.McGrath is a Broncos fan. Infact, he's so passionate about hisrugby league team, "fan" wouldnot do him justice. He is on firstname basis with all members ofthe team and coaching staff."I've followed them since1988 and I try to get to training atleast once a fortnight, and I nevermiss a home game," he said.He has also been to the pastseven Grand Finals and nine in all, seeing the Broncos succeed twice but nonemore pleasing that this year's victory.McGrath has tempted the Broncos intogreyhound racing.Barry and Shaun Berrigan, Tony Carroll,Craig Maguire, Brent Tate, Justin Hodges,Sam Thiaday, Ben Ikin and juniordevelopment officer Paul Dwyer are allinvolved in greyhound racing syndicates.McGrath ... minus his Broncos jersey.Of his own future, Big Steve sees noreason why he can't still be in greyhoundracing control for the next 10 or 20 years tocome. He says the introduction of twilightgreyhound racing has been a boon for theindustry. For two decades, Big Steve McGrathhas been helping guide the industry on its way.BackgroundWhatever the task in life, it is importantto lay a firm foundation if best results areto be expected. This should also be theprime objective of breeders and trainerswishing to achieve success on the track. How do we do this? Assuming thegreyhound has the credentials (breeding)to win, we should then look at other factors, including diet.An adequate and well balance diet isthe essential requirement for goodhealth, development, strength, stamina, speed, soundness and athleticperformance. When planning a diet to meet theseneeds, the aim must be to provide anadequate intake of energy, protein, fibre, fluids, minerals, electrolytes andvitamins to ensure vitality, good healthand peak performance.According to Dr John Kohnke, arespected veterinarian in greyhoundnutrition, these considerations are vitalingredients for success.Dr Kohnke also said energy, with theexception of water, is the most importantcomponent of a greyhound's diet. However, despite this good advice, some trainers still deviate from tried andtrue practices and pay the ultimate penaltyin the shape of disappointment. It makes one think of the wisdom ofsayings, such as: When you're on a goodLay a Firm Foundationfor Better Resultsthing stick to it, leave well alone, don'tchange horses in mid stream, and others likeit.Over the years it has been debated whethertraining and feeding of greyhounds is an "art"or a "science".Whatever the belief, preparing andtraining the racing greyhound can be achallenging and rewarding experience.A well balanced diet with careful use ofsupplements at all stages of life is essentialto reduce stress, maintain health, optimizeperformance and aid recovery.Simply, the aim is to set the rightfoundation for a good start and bestresults.Three old favourites still be bestThe three foundation products I haveselected to give greyhounds a good start arewell known to trainers world-wide.The first one is Feramo-Greyhound, theworld's first supplement specificallyformulated for greyhounds more than 30years ago and one that still holds pride ofplace as the supplement of choice to correctminor imbalances and inadequate feedlevels in all racing, breeding and growinggreyhounds.Make no mistake, Feramo-Greyhoundis an oldie but a goodie which is formulatedto NRC standards with additional amounts ofvitamin A, D, iron and other trace mineralsto meet the specific needs of the racing andgrowing greyhound.Importantly, over the years Feramo hasundergone formulation updates on aregular basis to match new researchfindings related to nutrition,Feramo is easy to use and isrecommended as a set rate daily supplementfor all greyhounds. The standard 1 teaspoon (4gram) dose isadequate for racing greyhounds. The next foundation product I haveselected is Calci-D, a product specificallyformulated to correct the imbalance ofcalcium and phosphorus in meat added tothe diet.Calci-D is given at a calculated dose ratein direct proportion to the amount of meatfed. Calci-D is formulated to provide anoptimum balance of bone minerals as well asvitamin A and D to regulate uptake andbalance of these minerals in the body.Calci-D comes in a powder form and as asuspension.Trainers are well aware of the powderform which is recommended for racinggreyhounds, brood bitches and growingpuppies after weaning. Calci-D Suspensionon the other hand is specifically formulatedfor young puppies that are learning to lap.If it is not shaken prior to use, it can bepoured slowly from the bottle as a gel whichis ideal for young puppies to lick off bitchesteats, or lap from a plate or a saucer placed inthe puppy area.More later about extra uses and handyhints for Calci-D and about correct mineralrequirements for good bones, fewerfractures and less down time at the track. The third member of the foundation triois Beta-Cel, an electrolyte (body salt)formula and the first of its kind developedto meet the specific needs of the racinggreyhound.Beta-Cel is something special and isthe ideal electrolyte for greyhounds ifbest performance is expected.Once greyhounds start to gallop or raceon a repeated basis, the requirement forcertain electrolytes increases. Most trainers are aware of the routineuse of Beta-Cel, but there is even muchmore to know about this electrolytefoundation supplement and I will elaboratefurther when discussing the extra uses andhandy hints for Feramo and Calci-D.However, it is important to rememberthat Beta-Cel is recommended as the baseelectrolyte supplement in the greyhound'sdiet to which other electrolyte formulationssuch as Beta-K, Recharge and Neutradexcan be added as required to meet specificneeds or aid recovery from travelling orracing. In summaryI speak with confidence about the bigthree foundation supplements and themany thousands of trainers using them aretestament to how they are perceived in thegreyhound world.Tried and true products such asFeramo, Calci-D and Beta-Cel are worththeir weight in gold and trainers find themeconomical and reliable with the addedassurance they are doing the best for theirgreyhounds.More later on about routine use, handyhints and special purposes for this fabuloustrio. The (November, 2006) Journal Page 13

Who needs kidswhen you've got30 greyhoundsSIX years ago Mal Dawson retiredfrom his job at Telstra and he andwife Kim loaded up a bus attacheda Subaru and a dinghy and set out aroundAustralia in search of an IVF program.Along the way they decided to settle in<strong>Queensland</strong> and picked up almost 30greyhounds.Kim was having trouble falling pregnantand medical advice was to take the stress outof their lives and it just might happen. And they were also told that <strong>Queensland</strong>had a great IVF program."So we sold up, packed up and headedaround Australia," said Kim. "And I becamea mother to almost 30 greyhounds."The Dawsons settled at Ormeau leasing asmall acreage while Mal established acommunications company."I had a guy who would come and mowthe property," said Mal. "He had a greyhoundthat wasn't much good and he was going toget rid of it."Kim and I decided to take it off hishands."The dog raced as Safron City and whilethe pair knew they were basically taking a lifelongpet to be, the dog did eventually win arace at the Gold Coast."He's now eight and a pet," said Kim.That initial success prompted thegreyhound racing novices to get another dog.Ron Goldsmith trained Rapid Pony to winfive races. The Dawsons were hooked andgot a few more. Not long after they got lumped with themall when Ron decided to pack up and head toTamworth to live."We moved to a 19-acre property we areleasing at Blacksoil and decided to do thisourselves," said Mal. "That was at Christmastime and we are having a ball. It's become apassion."They have five in training including recentIpswich maiden debut winner Shez Regal(Lindale Blue-Miss Candy Cane).Shez Regal and her litter sister MissMakatam were impulse buys for the couple."We had gone to the breeder (PeterArthur) to buy a Surf Lorian pup, which wedid," said Kim. "On our way out of theproperty, I spotted these two little bitches byLindale Blue and I just had to have them."While Shez Regal won first up, Dawsonrates Miss Makatam highly."We've been picking the brains of peopleas we go about training," said Mal."Greyhound racing people are soeasy to get on with, and that hasmade our introduction to the sportso much easier."The Dawsons have raced thoroughbredswith success, winning at Eagle Farm withGuns Ablaze and Rusty Ranch took out theSt George Cup."But you can have 10 greyhounds for thecost of one racehorse," said Mal. And that'swhat they've done. The Dawsons are unsure of their longtermfuture."We are thinking about buying agreyhound property in <strong>Queensland</strong> and haveeven looked at one for sale just recently," saidMal."But there is also the lure to head back toWA where we come from originally."At the moment they have a fast increasinggreyhound family, are winning races, andliving their passion to the fullest.Mal's business now has five employeesand he can find plenty of time for hisgreyhound training. In fact,Denis had been trying to scale down and eventake a break from the industry in which hehas been involved for many years. But in stepped Denis' wife Susan andluckily for Denis "she's a good judge" ofgreyhounds."Susan wanted her, so I bought her straightaway," said Denis.Since then Pink Tassels has gone on hermerry way, winning race after race, taking hertally to 16 with her recent victory in the CairnsFuturity. For Denis it was back-to-back victoriesin the mini classic having won it in 2005 withhis Cairns greyhound of the year SouthernSaga.Denis was happy to snap up Pink Tasselssimply because of her fabulous damline onethat Hickmott has had so much success within the past few years.Pink Tassels settled in to the Godfreytraining routine so much so that she evenheaded south for a brief stint with the TonyZammit kennel where she was tested over710m at Albion Park. But she had the misfortune to run intosuperstar Lucy's Light, including once whenthird to Lucy's when the now track recordholder ran a blistering 41.69secs.We educate yourpup up our firstclass straight track... gets them fit andswitches them on.ARM WORKOur bulkl ring is a nice sizeand the arm has a built-insqueaker and also has astraight. To assess your pup properly, send it toTower LodgeBrother FoxGun Law OstiMiss Dusty LeeTrendy LeighNew TearsSobbing SalWee SalPINK TASSELS/ABSOLUTE MAGICMalawiMalawi's PrinceDuchess MarinaShocking PinkAmerigo ManElusive BeautyElusive Osti"But she took a few bad knocks inBrisbane and we decided to bring her hometo get her confidence back and that's what hashappened," said Denis. The bitch came from 10 lengths off thepace to win the Futurity narrowly.Godfrey believes Pink Tassels can keepracing at least until Cairns Cup time next year."She's only ever had one injury in hercareer, a pin muscle, but she's also only oneof five dogs to have bettered the 32 secondmark for 544m at Cairns," he said.Pink Tassels ran 31.92. TOP: Judge Bros streets his rivals to win the inaugural Ipswich 431m Auction Series. RIGHT: Trainer TomNoble and Alan Olsen, son of part-owner Robert Olsen, with Judge Bros and the Auction trophy.By DAVID BRASCHTOM Noble has been in greyhoundracing long enough to have learned a fewtricks. So when he snapped up, for the princelysum of $1000, a bitch called Cheli's Princesshe thought he could do some good with her.Not that Cheli's Princess did not haveability. It was just that she had an aversion toshowing it all the time. The daughter of Casual Encounter-Brindle Cheli was bred and originally racedby Barry and Sharon Morris and won anumber of races for them. But she went sour, Barry and Sharon gota tad tired of her, and a couple of other trainerstried to get her to produce her best ... withoutsuccess. In stepped Tom and bought her for $1000.Noble found the secret, unlocked it andwon a Bundaberg Cup with Cheli's Princess. In all she finished her career with 23 wins, including a 30.20 win at Ipswich over the old512m distance, then retired to the Nobleproperty at Churchable for a career at stud.Tom put her to Awesome McLaren andgot a very smart dog called Gidgee Coals butafter winning in 30.40 around Albion Parkhe broke down never to race again.Cheli's Princess went to Bitability Bale, the Galaxy winner who had just arrived tostand at Sarah Pringle's property around theroad, and Tom sent his bitch there for hersecond mating. In stepped Robert Olsen, Tom's long-timeHandler Kate with the $10,200 WhiskyAssassin-Thai Charm pup that topped theIpswich Auction. Here comethe JudgeTownsville mate.Robert had a couple of mates, Gerard andPeter Judge whose company Judge Bros isone of North <strong>Queensland</strong>'s major electricalcontractors, and he had finally talked the boysinto coming into a greyhound."Tom rang and said he had a couple ofpups for us," said Robert. "But he had keptall the black ones. The boys and I got leftwith the ugly ones."The "ugly" bitch showed little ability, butthe dog quickly turned into a swan ... andracing as Judge Bros he has been a prolificwinner for the group, including the inauguralIpswich Auction 431m final.Judge Bros is the only dog Gerard andPeter race, although Robert has persuadedthem into shares in a Hallucinate-Kalka Katedog pup now 10 months old.In all Judge Bros (to time of writing) haswon 27 races. But he has been an Ipswich431m specialist, the Auction final being his15th victory over the sprint.Noble was disappointed the dog could notshow his best in the much richer 520m seriesearly in the year."He had done some ligaments on a hindfoot and at one time it looked like he wouldnot race again," said Noble."But we gave him time off and it healedup fine, but it put him back too much and hereally wasn't ready for the 520m series."The 431m series was a bonus.Aided by the rails draw, Judge Bros wasin front into the back straight and then heldoff a determined Steele Diamond and fastcharging Nevada Lad who had come from lastearly.Ipswich Auction (431m)1 JUDGE BROS $1.50(Bitability Bale-Cheli's Princess)Owner: Robert Olsen, Gerard & PeterJudgeTrainer: Tom Noble2 STEELE DIAMOND $4.70(Bearability-Girl Diamond)3 NEVADA LAD $15(Bearability-Shady Bee)Others: 4 Tomeels Boy $25, 5 Zee ZeeThree $25, 6 Burnie Barrie $36, 7 Fool'sFormula $18, 8 King Contagious $11.Time: 25.36.It was a victory of sorts for great<strong>Queensland</strong> galloper and sire Bearability. Golf buddies land some silver ... quickSOME friendships last, some comeand go, some reach great heights ... andthen some get a greyhound.Long-time mates Brad Connon andGeorge Doyle both love a game of golf. They play regularly with Gary Hinds.A couple of years ago Gary's sonAdam bred a litter of greyhound pupsby Elite State from his former smartAlbion Park galloper She's Travelling.George had already been a dog man,10 years ago racing a number withsuccess including Cee Jay Fly who ran atenth off the Ipswich 512m track recordbut broke down soon after. So it was natural Brad and Georgewould be convinced by Gary Hinds tosnap up one of his son's pups. That's just what they did and twoyears later Brad's first venture into theindustry has landed a Michael MillerMemorial at Capalaba.Racing as Mr Quicksilver, he ledthroughout to win in 19.81 beatingStrike Rate and Theodore in what hasbecome a "hot" race among younggreyhounds in this state.Mr Quicksilver is trained by TonyBrett and the dog's victory in the heatand final are the only times Brett hasraced a dog at Capalaba. He had to be talked into taking MrQuicksilver to the race."Kerry Halls works with me and he'sOwners Brad Connon and George Doyle and trainer Tony Brett withCapalaba's Michael Miller Memorial winner Mr Quicksilver.got a couple of dogs," said Brad. "Kerrysuggested this race would suit him and thatwe should have a look at it."Brad and George even had to give MrQuicksilver his only trial on the track whileTony Brett was in NSW winning theSydney Cup with Quidame.Mr Quicksilver's victory in the TerryHines-sponsored race was worth $9000 toBrad and George, but the pair could notcontain their delight at the victory."We wanted to get a hobby," said Brad."We'd been mates for ages and when thepup came up, we went for it." Futurity winputs a Springin Ray's stepDALLAS Beckett has long been one ofthe leading lights in greyhound racing inRockhampton. He's also a very generous man.Dallas is always looking for high classgreyhounds, and constantly turning over histeam in search of that better than averagegalloper. So along the way, he's happy to simplyhand over some very useful greyhounds toother owners and trainers. One such "giveaway" is Spring Lucy(Royal Assassin-Dancing Socks) who onlya couple of months ago joined the kennel oflong-time dog man Ray Young.Ray's been training dogs for 32 yearsbut has only ever had a couple of dogs inwork at any one time. And until Spring Lucy joined hiskennel, he'd never won a feature race. That all changed when Spring Lucycame from near last early to win the recentRockhampton Futurity and Ray started tocelebrate."I love white and black greyhounds andthis bitch is white and black, and whenDallas offered her to me, I took her straightaway," said Ray. "I've since got another onefrom him."Young needed to be a bit of patchworkon Spring Lucy when she arrived."She had a bit of a sore shoulder whichI worked on, and I gave her a few weeks offas well," he said. "It worked."He has even removed a track legstrapping from the bitch saying she nolonger hits herself."Dallas had too many dogs at the timeso he simply gave her to me."Victory in the Futurity final was thethrill of Ray's 32-year training career."The best dog I've had before this bitchwas Red Riot which won a few races for meafter Andrew Russell sent him north."Ray has three dogs in training and heand wife Rosa have moved originally fromLismoreGBOTAHighland SmashRepairsBig Maiden420mWednesday December 6Qualifying heats (Non Betting) starting at 6pmTuesday December 12Four Semi-Finals - Normal prizemoneyGuarded Blind Draw for the semisFinal Tuesday December 19Winner $10,000plus trophy & rug and free service to Addis Boy courtesyNorthern Rivers Stud; 2nd $2000, 3rd $1000, unp $50 eachNoms close Friday December 1 with the NSW G&HRRA at 10amContact: John Scholten (02) 6621 4106email: lisgbota@nrg.com.auRosa and Ray Young with RockhamptonFuturity winner Spring Lucy.Emerald, then Yeppoon to Rockhampton tobe closer to the greyhound track."I've been interested in greyhoundracing for years," said Ray. "We liked abitch from the litter. The bitch had actuallybeen Tony's daughter's pup but shewanted to sell her to buy a car."We talked Tony into letting us buy thepup."That bitch now races as Warped andfrom the Tony Zammit kennel she almostgave the first-time owners the biggest thrillof their ever-so-short greyhound racingcareer."She was beaten a nose at her first startat Albion Park, but she won the followingweek," said Zoran. The boys are very low-key owners.Zoran admits neither Ben nor hisfamily are aware they own a greyhound."My family don't like me gambling, soI haven't told them about owning the dog,"he told The Journal.Apap suggested the boys give Warpedto Tony Zammit to train and Zoran andBen have fitted right in to the Zammitkennel clientele."Tony is great, but he does like to havea chat," said Zoran.Warped has since won at the GoldCoast and looks to have a promising racecareer ahead of her."We are already thinking of a breedingcareer with her because she's a winner atAlbion Park and so well bred," said Zoran. Now that will be something to tell hisfamily.Nova 106.9 PromotionThe Brisbane Club's promotion withradio station Nova 106.9 was a greatsuccess during September, with greyhoundracing dominating discussion on the stationduring the month.A bumper crowd was on hand for thefun day. It was great to see Albion Parkalive with activity.Turnover was double a normal Fridaymeeting and nearly three times thecorresponding Friday in 2005.Congratulations go to Megan Nutall, who was the lucky winner of the $20,000in the Nova promotion.Megan is now a fan of the greyhoundWarped, who selected Megan's dog bowlfrom the 100 prize-winners.Warped came to the rescue when Teddythe Pomeranian had a case of stage frightand was more intent on running away thaneating out of a dog bowl. There was never any doubt agreyhound would knock back a freedinner, and it added to the drama andexcitement of the event.Dear Sir,I am compelled to respond to the Letterto the Editor on Page 3 in October's Journalpenned by Cory Austin. It is right when he says it is time for achange in racing. The two horse codes couldwell race at the same venue.Greyhound welfare is a major problem forthe GRA and Brisbane Greyhound Club. The chaotic traffic and summer heatwavespose genuine concerns.Cory Austin and Kevin Seymourconveniently disregard the welfare ofgreyhounds forced to travel at a snails pacein dog trailers in up to 40 degree summertemperature to race at Albion Park.Even allowing for the cross city tunnel, experts predict gridlock in the next 10 years. The Brisbane Club and the GRA have theforesight to realise that Albion Park isdoomed as a greyhound venue. They must now convince the RacingMinister of their animal welfare predicament. The General Manager of Animal Welfare atthe Department of Primary Industries, Dr RickSymons, could be of assistance whenoutlining the necessity for relocation to ananimal friendly accessible complex.ThanksKev GallowayWant a Good Tip?All CarBrokers794 Oxley Rd, CorindaContactDaryl & DeniseKavanagh0418 878880Have the Right Info for YouNew or Used CarsServicing the GreyhoundIndustry for 25 years2003 VY CommodoreGenuine one owner, fulllong book history. During their regular visitsthey noticed a greyhound Dash (Mal'sHonour) that was looking for a home.It was then that Di had the thought ofcombining her interests of web design andgreyhounds, and from that grew the GAPwebsite.Success came from the original design, the greyhound found a new home, with helpfrom the website, and Dash went on to live ina nursing home.As the website evolved new features wereadded and the page in its current form is apowerful and essential promotional tool forthe Greyhound Adoption Program.Di regularly gives up her valuable timevoluntarily to update articles and photographson the website and manage the site on a dailybasis.A large quantity of inquiries and adoptionsare a direct result of visitors to the website. The interest the site generates isenormous, and has helped find homes forhundreds of dogs, and educated many peopleabout the greyhound's nature. With three pet greyhounds at home, Diand her son Rick have an interest in the racingside of the industry as well. They have raced Polar Princess who wona couple of races for them, and currently havea greyhound named King Kissy and a SurfLorian pup that they are looking forward toracing in the future.Regulars at the Capalaba greyhound track,Di and Rick (pictured above) created awebpage for Capalaba, and more recently Dihas completed a website for Brisbane andRichmond Clubs in NSW.Her business known as Dinky Di webdesign has created pages for many greyhoundstuds and kennels. The number of visits to the GreyhoundAdoption Program website and commentsreceived about the site is proof that Di isleading the way with her web design.Dogs for Racing OverseasMust be under 26 monthsPh Steve Wilkes(07) 54230276 or 0427 319944The (November, 2006) Journal Page 24

THE path to Group 1 glory is never aGary Clarksimple one.The Paws Of Thunder at Wentworth Park,in its seventh running, had many twists andturns even before the boxes opened and theend result was one that not even ownerStephen Conner thought was possible earlierthis year.Victorian-trained Suave Fella came fromsixth out of the first turn to explode betweenrunners in the final 50 metres to give Connerand Jason Thompson a win that had aninteresting build up.Connor, who gave away dogs for 20years, couldn't help himself whenreading the Greyhound Recorder in2003 when visiting his parents home inCasino. He saw a pup for sale and made thecall. The events that followed almostended Connor's involvement in thesport, but it also got him into theThompson kennel. When Connor was left with a coupleof dogs he had to find a trainer for themand decided to call Jason."Jason was a little hesitant at the timedue to the circumstances and it reallytook some talking to get him to take atleast one dog," Connor said. That dog was Schauman who had areasonable career in Victoria beforeConnor sent him to Perth and then on toEric Castle in <strong>Queensland</strong>.That's when Connor askedThompson to find him a good dog."Jason rang and said he has beenwatching a dog who is strong, doesthings wrong but has ability, so I tookthe advice and paid a fair sum," he said. That dog was Suave Fella. Earlier this year he was injured at Ballarat and had an extended break, one that has paid dividends.IGRCIpswich Greyhound Racing ClubNew South Wales'Leading allthe Way'Vince Curry Highland SmashRepair Memorial Maiden Series'Australia's Richest Maiden &Only Maiden Group Race'$25,000 to the Winner FinalQualifying Heats - Saturday February 10Quarter Finals - Tuesday February 20Semi Finals - Tuesday February 27Grand Final - Tuesday March 6'The Vince Curry - The Nursery of Champions'Highland Smash Repair'Our Major Sponsor & Provider of all your smash repair needs'31 Standish Street, Salisbury.Phone: 07 3277 2722 Fax: 07 3277 9447'Support Those who Support Our Industry'Ipswich Greyhound Racing ClubPh: 07 3202 2977 Fax: 07 3202 2510 Email: igrc@gil.com.au"We knew we had a good dog after Jasonrang and said he had trialled a post to postrecord at Sandown. They have raceddogs for 30 years.Steve Landsdown, one of Steve's matesfrom school, helped get the Connors intogreyhound racing.Eric Landsdown, Steve's father, and oneof the great trainers of the past few decades, organised a dog from Alex Reid in Victoria."Mum and dad got a dog named Cabaman* Boarding Facilities* Spelling* Pre-Training* Break-in $60pw* RearingThe (November, 2006) Journal Page 26Steve Kim and SarahConnor and trainerJason Thompsonwith Paws ofThunder winnerSuave Fella.in 1976 and won eight races," saidConnor."It was hard not to be involved whenyour parents and mates are in the game,so dad gave me and my brother Mick adog."We named it Equal Interest and Iremember clearly going to trial atSingleton and returning on the Friday, emptied the bank account and our firstwinner hooked me."Mick is now the steward at Casino.Steve went to one of the strongest RugbyLeague schools in Sydney south at De LaSalle and was coached by Ron Arnold whohas been a casual guest on Sky Racing's "TheCatching Pen" and is MC at GBOTAmeetings at Wentworth Park.So why two decades out of the sport afterinitially being hooked?"I got married (to Kim) became a panelbeater, then started a family (daughter Sarah)and we saved to buy a home," he said.Connor has five Collision-Makasa Balepups about to be broken in and there is littledoubt the standout will be heading south.Suave Fella seemed certain to gain aTopgun start and then head to the MelbourneCup before a possible trip to Perth. Will Stephen and the family finally travelto see their star."The seats are booked already, Kim laiddown the instructions, it looks like we willall be doing a fair bit of travelling now."Nathan & RhondaGOODWIN’SBoarding Kennels& Trial Track40104 Bruce Highway, Deeragun (T'ville)(07) 4774 4780 or 0408 180 768Straight Trial Track(sand/loam surface)* Monday 6-7:30am* Tuesday 6-7:30am 5:30-6:30pm* Wednesday 6-7:30am 5:30-6:30pm* Thursday CLOSED* Friday 6-7:30am 5:30-6:30pm* Saturday By Appointment Only* Sunday 6-7:30am 5-Dark

LITTLE RIVER trainer PaulBartolo has a range of optionswith his outstanding BrettLee-Leprechaun Yap litter but looks setto target the Western Australian YoungStar Classic in November.Miss Mini Mouse won the SouthAustralian Oaks after recording a besttime of 29.39.Her litter sister Betty's Angel hadstolen all the headlines in the lead-up tothe final after clocking a sensational29.17 at Angle Park. But she couldn't cross from the pinkin the final and finished down the track.Bartolo said he thought Miss MiniMouse was a great chance because herquicker sister has had trouble beforecrossing the field from box eight. The trainer also bred the litter out ofLeprechaun Yap (Hotshot-LeprechaunMiss) who was a multiple city winnerwith a best time at Sandown of 30.06.She had 37 starts for 14 wins, mostlyin the city, and collected almost $45,000in prizemoney. He said there were five bitches andtwo dogs in the litter and he sold two ofthe pups.Global Warming is racing in Perthand a very quick bitch which broke herhock was sold as a broodbitch but couldstill make it back to the track.Bartolo said the dog he has, FastIndian, damaged a metacarpal in his firstrace start when he won clocking 29.98 atThe Meadows. He said Fast Indian had already hadfour months on the sidelines and x-raysAndrew Thomsonshowed he would not be ready to putback into work until mid-November."Betty's Angel has always been oneand a half to two lengths faster thanMiss Mini Mouse and Fast Indian is asquick as Betty's Angel," he said."It's been very frustrating him beingon the sidelines because he is missing outon the puppy races, but we just don'thave a choice."He'll make a decent race dog. He's32kg and just perfect for two turntracks."Bartolo said he would keep his 26kgbitches on the two turn tracks and letthem go through their grades."They can get out in front and bowlalong without getting into too muchtrouble," he said. The trainer said Leprechaun Yap wasthe best bitch he had raced."She won the Rosebowl at GeelongVictoriaand got beat in the Laurels by a nose,"he said."I've only got six in work, but they allgo all right," he said."We've also got another litter ofBrett Lee-Chloe Jones coming throughand they broke in alright," he said.Bartolo has been involved ingreyhounds for about 15 years, but hewas always going to be hooked after hisfirst venture. He bought four pups from SteveKavanagh, of Brother Fox fame, twoturned out to be Farmer George andPaulatana."Because I bought four he droppedthe price from $1000 each to $900, butSteve rang me after they started and toldme I got a good bargain," he said.Bartolo also bred Leprechaun Yap.Previous Leprechaun Miss littersincluded one by Head Honcho thatincluded Jones Junior, Clearwater Boy,Royal Assassin and Lynshia Star. His first Chloe Jones litter includedTrewly Special, Two Up Larry and GoForever.Other outstanding chasers he bredwere Smack Wallop and Ammo. The 47-year-old said he has been fulltimein greyhounds for the best part of15 years."I thought I would give it a go andthis is where we are now," he said."The quickest I've had would beJones Junior. Leprechaun Yap had abrother Smash Bang that ran 29.80 whenhe was 16 months old but he brokedown."Betty's Angel goes all right. She'snever drawn the red and it'll beinteresting to see how fast she can gofrom the inside draw," he said.BRISBANE GREYHOUND RACING CLUBproudly presents$93,000 Group 1Sky Channel Brisbane Cup 520mFor the best <strong>Greyhounds</strong> nominatedHeats - 7th DecemberFinal - 14th DecemberWinner - $55,000 + Trophy & RugSecond - $10,000Third - $5300Fourth - $1500Unplaced - $500“HOT SUMMER NIGHTS”Sky Channel Beach Party14th December 2006• Committee Room • Christmas Buffet• Entertainment • $35 per personBookings to be made directly with theClub on (07) 3862 1744Bookings close Monday 11th DecemberGeorge Dailly with Pororoca. IN all the years I've been in greyhoundracing, there have been some wonderfulhighlights.Probably the biggest betting plunge Iever saw was at Capalaba plenty of yearsago, and it was landed by John Reimer. The dog was Pacific Ben and Iremember it like it was yesterday. In those days there were 10 bookies atCapalaba, and they would let you on.Pacific Ben won comfortably. But thething that stood out was the punter whocollected the Reimer winnings. He looked more like a music teacher,horn-rimmed glasses, and the look thathardly seemed likely to be handling such abetting commission. The bookie kept letting him on, and henever ran out of money to back the dog.I watched him collect and was amazed. He stuffed the money into a large plasticbag which by the time he was finished wasbulging.I've since discussed this day withJohnny and of course he remembers it well.He didn't tell me the "music teacher's"name. JR might still have him up his sleevefor a future punt.On a trip to Lismore "in the good olddays", one of the locals was holding courtalongside the fence waiting for the dogs tobe called onto the track. His dog looked terrible, very poor tosay the least.Syd NorrisMemoriesHe was telling one of the punters on theother side of the fence what he was andwasn't giving his dog at the time.We fell about laughing when one of theother handlers, a local woman trainer, saidto the guy holding court "had he ever tried athing called MEAT".My late father Perc was a characterhimself, dry wit, and knew everyone. In the early days of straight track racing, there was no kennelling. We would justkeep the dogs under a tree for shade andwhen our race came up, we would headover to the track. When dad and I turned up to race, Iwould always get left with the dogs.Perc would head off. He'd chat to everyone, finding out whatthey had done with their dogs all week, whothought they could win, and who didn't.He had that way of getting the info outof people. By the time he came back to meand the dogs, he knew the lot.Yes, he was a sticky beak.Back in the 50s, dad pulled off a greatcoup. It was in a final at Capalaba. In those days Archie Sugden (a formertop local trot driver) was riding the horsewho pulled the lure for the dog races.Keith Fuller, a likable larrikin, has MissKingscliffe in a big final on the day and wehad Long Story up against her.Miss Kingscliffe was a "bit of a nonnie"and needed a short hare drive, while LongStory would chase without a lure he wasthat good a chaser. On one of Perc's pre-race fact findingmissions he found out Keith Fuller hadoffered Archie 10 shillings to keep the hareright under the nose of Miss Kingscliffe.Dad wasted no time getting to Archie tooffer him a quid, one pound, to make sureArchie rode that horse as hard as he could. That's how it turned out and Long Storywon.Next Edition:MORE HIGHLIGHTS.Remembering KayUnfortunately I missed the opportunityto say a farewell to Kay Easton in mycolumn in last month's Journal. If ever there was a person "bred" to bein greyhound racing it was Kay. Herfather George Rowley was a long-timetrainer, and a great trainer with dogs likeTravelogue and Gay Occa.I remember of Kay that she had awonderful sense of humour, quick wittedand always fun to be with. She loved to tella joke or listen to a joke.My late dad Perc also always soughtout Kay's company at a racetrack and theyhad a whale of a time.Kay and her husband Eric were likechalk and cheese, but they were partnersfor decades. The great dogs they had werea credit to their ability as trainers, andboth were ever so highly respected by theentire industry.I know for a fact, Eric will miss Kaywith all his heart. They were best mates aswell as husband and wife. We'll all missher.ABOVE: Malibu Gem streaks away to win a maiden at Casino. RIGHT: Anthony Bennettand Diane Sneddon with Malibu Gem.Anthony reckons he's proved his pointANTHONY Bennett doesn'tmuch care for what other peoplethink. If he did, neither he nor partnerDiane Sneddon, would havebothered to keep Malibu Gem.The daughter of Solid Ebony-Dancin' Nancy achieved a fewmilestones some weeks ago when shewon a Maiden at Casino forMundoolin based Bennett andSneddon. It was the bitch's first win, at her44th race start. She had turned fiveyears and four months a few daysbefore. The May 2001 whelp is a fawnbitch and much loved by Bennettand Sneddon. So much so that theykept her, and her only, whileAnthony battled throughmeningococcal meningitis in March of2004."The only reason we kept her wasbecause she was the only dog we hadduring the time I was in hospital,"Anthony told The Journal.Bennett spent nine days on lifesupport before resisting the dreadedillness.Malibu Gem is nothing special as arace dog.In fact, "Jackie", as she is knownaround home, is the only winner fromher litter."The only one to ever pass anotherdog in a race," said Anthony. But Anthony and Diane are ingreyhound racing for more reasonsthat just to win. They love it, and specially lovetheir dogs. Which is why Malibu Gemwas given a second chance."She was kept as a pet aroundhome while I was recovering," saidAnthony."But she started galloping aboutthe place and eventually we decided toput her back into training."When she finally won her maiden, over 411m at Casino in September,Anthony and Diane reckoned they hadproven their point."It was a fantastic thrill just to winthat race with her," he said. "Andnow she will probably retire."In all Malibu Gem has now wonone race and been placed nine times, eight of those at Casino.Anthony reckons the point heproved is that most people give intoo quickly, not just in greyhoundracing, but in life."Many people would think I ammad for keeping her this long, andsome would even have their usualchuckle."But we ride the bumps in lifeand just enjoy racing our dogs," hesaid. The majority of the Bennettgreyhounds are found homes whenthey retire. Some 15 enjoy life in retirementwith families throughout the southeast. As Anthony said, it might havebeen a lowly Casino maiden, but tohe and Diane, it was everything. The (November, 2006) Journal Page 30

On race night, Bernie's the right catchByNATHAN GOODWINAS an owner or a trainer you are normally veryhappy to win, but as a catcher it is hard to hide theexcitement from Bernie Fraser in Townsville.Bernie has been the No. 1 catcher in Townsvillesince racing began here in December 1976 andcontinues to catch winner after winner each week. After catching a winner, Bernie is more thanhappy to tell you his current yearly tally, which atthe time of writing stands at 58 for 2006."My best year of catching winners is 73 in onecalendar year, but I am going to break that thisyear," said Bernie.Bernie, 56, works hard on a daily basis now withSt Vinnies unloading trucks. But for the past 30 years or more he worked forthe Hart family firstly on there soft drink run andlater in the landscaping business."I can count on one hand the greyhoundmeetings I have missed at Townsville," he said. "Itry to never miss a meeting, who knows I might notcatch a winner."When asked about the good dogs Bernie hascaught over the years, he rattled them off like itwas yesterday."Swanky Gun for Joe Olsen, Avenue Princessand Idol Eyes for Tom Hill, Ella's Legend for FredChristenson and all my favourite trainers dog's,Mal Little, including Blessed Power, Dr Woosh,Bernie Fraser withyet another winner.Curly Shuffle," he said."I've caught five Townsville Cup winners whichincluded the last 643m Cup won by MickCampbell's Act All Over."This year I caught my first big race winner inCairns when Darla for Mal Little won the CairnsCup Consolation."Bernie does also have a City catch to his credit."I was in Brisbane on holidays in July 2004 whenMal Little had Juninho (Trendy Leigh-PistolSmoke) with Denis Guppy and one Friday afternoonI got the call to catch him and he won."That's my one and only catch at Albion Parkfor a winner."When asked about the best trainers he has seen."Mal Little without a doubt, Tom Hill and MickCampbell," said Bernie. Bernie is also a sportingfanatic and never short of an opinion to boot."I have never missed a basketball match inTownsville with the Suns and now the Crocs," hesaid."I like going to Cowboy's home games with mygood friend Joe Dyer, but I love watching all thesports and racing on the television."But most of all I love dog racing."Bernie is something of a sports historian who isamazing at the facts and figures he can rememberof just about any sport you want to mention. It's never a night at the dogs unless BernieFraser is catching, but most of all catching winners. And Bernie's payment ... a can of lemonade.MeatRacing Mince (5% fat in 2kg & 20kg)Beef Mix (20kg only)Roo Meat (5kg & 20kg)Chicken Mince (1kg, 2kg & 10kg)Breeders Choice (chicken, F&V, Offal, Meat)Weaner (All-in-one)Edge (Beef, F&V, Bone Offal, 15% fat)Cooked Chicken Roll (2kg)BARF Patties - Dr Billinghurst’s Aussie R.A.W is available in sixflavours - Chicken, Beef, Lamb, Pork, Kangaroo and Combination(which contains beef, lamb, pork, chicken).BonesBeef, Pork, Lamb Bones; Roo Tails; Chicken NecksBiscuits & KibblesBox 1 4x2 (10kg) $22.95Box 1 2x2 (10kg) $22.95MAX Biscuits (18kg) $42Pets Delight (20kg) $22.95Top Draw (Racing Kibble) $29.95Bonnie(Working Dog, Complete, Puppy)Box 1 Gold $33Ph (07) 47289981Enduro Racer(Racer, Full Boar, Complete, Plus & Puppy)Rex's Beef & Chicken $24.95Rex's Family Dog $22.95Advance(1.5kg to 18kg)Pro Plan(1.8kg to 18kg)Fax (07) 47251720Royal Canin(1.5kg to 17kg)Pedigree Performance (18kg)Pedigree Natural (20kg)Optimum(18kg)Cat FoodGrand OpeningWhiskas(10kg)Friskies(10kg)SupplimentsSuper Cell(450 gm, 1kg & 3kg)December 4(Also available in 2kg & 5kg packs)Collars, Leads, Race and Plastic muzzles, hammock frames, bed covers,Fido Shampoo, Heartworm Flea & Tick Supplies.Electrolytes(1kg)Vitamin E(200 gm & 1kg)Vitamin 3(1kg)Methionine(450 gm)Bovine Colostrum (450g gm)Little Mate Milk Powder (20kg) $75The (November, 2006) Journal Page 31Unit 4, 59 Bowen RoadRosslea, TownsvilleDeliveryavailable in mostNth Qld areas

It is such an impact, we will run the article intwo parts, in November and December editions. In any discussion of influential broodbitches, one sure to get a mention is an English bitchwho came to Australia in the 1950s. Her name was Tapestry.Tapestry was bred by Captain Jack Chadwick, a prominent coursing figure in the UKwhere he judged 22 Waterloo Cups.Tapestry was closely related to some top class performers in England and Ireland. In 1947the sub-continent was divided into twosovereign states of India and Pakistan. We had a mixed greyhound breed by thenthanks to the extensive mating of local bitcheswith the imported dogs.I was born in 1946 a year before theindependence. My father, an ex-Royal Indian Armyoffice, was a great lover of open coursing andhad five mixed breed greyhounds .One was agreat open courser still remembered in ourarea as a freak.I didn't see him run but it is said he wouldchase the hare for kilometres in the hilly, stoney and bushy areas and wouldn't let himgo unsighted. As soon as the hare would enter a plainfields the dog would very easily pick him up.The dog was an Iranian-British cross. The Iranian breed still existsin Pakistan.Thesedogs arenot fast but they arewonderful chasers endowed witha great stamina. They are known as “Kissary” (whichmeans needle-like or hairy, in local Punjabilanguage). In Pakistan, open coursing is still a greathobby of peasantry. Our coursing season starts by the end ofOctober and goes on to mid February. Thereare different clubs known as “hunting teams”.The open coursing still carries the oldname of “hunting”. Each team comprises of40 to 50 persons and around 20 dogs. Each team hires a bus and lunch is takenalong by all individuals in a picnic-likemanner.They board the bus at 6am and travel 50to 60km towards the plains of Punjab, thelargest province of Pakistan.Around 8.30 they will reach the pastures. The bus stops and they would stretch intoa long single file like an infantry regiment ofolden days army advancing in the battle field, with the difference that they have woodensticks in their hands. The eldest man in the team is usually thecaptain. He announces the start of the opencoursing by slashing a bush with his stick, atraditional clapping. The “long march” into the plains beginsnow and no stone or bush is left unseen.Usually a hare is detected hiding orsleeping in the bushes by the oldexperienced “hunters”.T h e s epeopleRacing inPakistanh a v eunbelievable eyesightand they follow the footprints of ahare to the bush where it hides. The team captain would announce whichtwo dogs would be slipped after the hare.A whistle is blown to inform the stretchedteam to cease searching and watch the course.Every one would rush to a higher place. The searching line would be broken.Shouts of different kinds would be heard, everyone asking the other to get back and giveway to the hare. Some are swearing at the dog owners notto slip their dogs too early and let the harefirst be well on his feet. Then the hare is pushed out of the bushand when he has covered a good distance, the whistle is blown to slip the dogs. The dog owners would shout to appreciatetheir dog's performance.“Come on my son. Pick him up. Comeonce again. Oh you swine come on."The hare in this open course has an edgeover the dogs as he runs in his well-knownarea and thus dictates the way.The long march starts again. If a third dog is slipped the owner is finedthere and then.At 1pm lunch break is announced. Theteam sits on the bank of any canal or aroundany natural fountain and in a feast-like mannereveryone would put his lunch on a large clothand eat together. After the lunch the search starts again.Around 4pm the captain announces THEEND and everyone stops searching. This is a typical sight of winter opencoursing. One thing has to be kept in mind that thisa traditional coursing in which there is acompetition between the hare and the chasingdogs and not between the two dogs. The walled-coursing is an advanced sportintroduced in Pakistan by overseasPakistanis in the past 30 years. They started shipping coursing dogsfrom Ireland and UK in the 1970s.Five rich land owners of Punjab builtstadiums like coursing grounds. Eachof the walled clubs holds one coursingmeeting every month. The entry of a greyhound is 10 to15 pounds. No businessman, or bigcompany or any of the Governmentdepartments financially helps the greyhoundraces. The prizemoney consists of a very humbleamount. The greyhound community is growingstronger on its own strength. We have no oval grounds, no bookies, andno electric hare system. We have straightsprint races of 275 to 300 yards mainly aftera lure on a track in open air.Our drag is made of a dry hare skinstitched over a plastic hare which is hookedon a silver plate. This plate is attached to a wire. Theoperator moves the pulley through a handleand the wire revolves over a ball barringdragging the hare. The dogs are caged in boxes. As soon asthe hare appears in front of boxes they are letloose by the box operator. We have three referees on the ending line. They announce the first, second and thirdpositions. No official time is kept by any club, notrack records are maintained. No magazine or newspaper covers theseraces. We are a forgotten community though weimport around 100 greyhounds from UK,Ireland, Australia and the USA every year. The (November, 2006) Journal Page 34

A list of all sale prices isavailable from the club. The club would like to thank all vendors, purchasers and our loyal band of volunteersfor their support of Australia's longest runningand most successful Auction. The club is proud to be involved with allSouth-East <strong>Queensland</strong> clubs in a challengeseries. This series will have increasedprizemoney and is made possible through thesponsorship of industry icon Jimmy Roy. Detailsof the series appear in our advertisement inthis Journal.CAIRNSCAIRNS has lost another threegreyhound trainers last month.Carmel and Lloyd Metcalfe jnr have leftCairns for Tamworth. They have been strongsupporters of the Cairns Club since movinghere a few years ago and we would like tothank them for their support during their stayhere.Emma O'Connor, President, wouldpersonally like to thank Lloyd and Carmel fortheir help not only with Club matters but fortheir friendship and untiring help with herdogs on race night. Our loss will surely beTamworth's gain.Everyone was happy to share the goingaway prize that Junior won for them - theJackpot worth $1700. Carmel and Lloyd -good luck and keep safe.Mark (Charlie)Lutter's move to Biloela was work-related.Charlie has been involved for 4-5 years.Thank you Charlie for being another strongsupporter of the Cairns Club. Our loss in thiscase will be Rockhampton's gain. The club has been busy trying to repairCyclone Larry's damage, and has recently reloamedour track. The club would like to wish Evelyn Gougha speedy recovery.MACKAYThe club has endured a number ofproblems with the lure this year.Because of the way this system operateswe had a couple of new ideas bought in thatwere unsuccessful. But we were very fortunate to haveobtained two motors from Townsville Clubthat they no longer had any use for and thisalso gives us an opportunity to again thankthem for their assistance. Also, thank you to Bevan Williamson forthe two reconditioned motors which he hassupplied to our club.Through the help and guidance of NevilleJackson and the engineering skills ofcommittee person Gordon Francis, we notonly have one lure but two very operable luresand another on the bench being built. We would like to thank everyone involvedin this exercise as we can now go to trials ona Monday night and races on a Thursday nightand relax and enjoy our greyhound racing. So well done Mackay Club. The (November, 2006) Journal Page 38
