Welcome
A fruitful Symbiosis – SME’s in a Win-Win Situation
Constructions on legs of steel in the open
sea for the most part symbolize the oil
and gas industry. These giants are the
very symbol of the industry that supplies
the society with energy.
But the offshore industry consists of
many more things, than the process
happening over and under the surface
of the sea, hundreds of kilometres from
the coast. Many processes take place in
the construction and development division
of sub-suppliers on the mainland.
A significant part of the Danish offshore
industry activities takes place on shore
at companies that construct, consult,
produce, maintain and monitor on orders
from operators , who operate the offshore
installations.
In this way the offshore industry is
based on a symbiosis. Common for
every symbiosis is that both sides benefit
– regardless of the difference in size – “A
win-win situation”.
To expand the offshore industry and
strengthen this win-win situation, there
can be a need for a professionalization of
the small and medium-sized enterprises
that supply products and services to the
offshore industry. Clear strategic goals,
professionalization of the organization
and an increase of the investments in
product development can be vital for
these companies – and thereby for the
whole industry – in order to overcome
future challenges and competition on an
international and competitive market.
Director Peter Blach
In this edition of ON/OFF News (14),
small and medium-sized enterprises and
their challenges are brought into focus.
Companies tell about their reflections on
the future, and Offshore Center Danmark
reports about the centre’s effort
for small and medium-sized enterprises.
As a knowledge centre Offshore Center
Danmark has an important role in the
process, which the industry is facing, and
wants to contribute to a strengthening
of the Danish offshore industry, so that
Denmark not only maintains its role as
an oil nation but also expands on new
markets.
It is therefore with pleasure that Offshore
Center Danmark can announce that it
just has received status as the official
Danish offshore innovation network and
furthermore has received a large government
grant from the Danish Ministry of
Science, Technology and Innovation.
With this grant the centre can continue
its goal-orientated work for the Danish
offshore industry, which the small and
medium-sized enterprises are an important
part of.
Kind regards, Peter Blach
The redesigned offshore magazine went down well
with the offshore industry
With the ambition to create a magazine
for the entire offshore industry, Offshore
Center Danmark’s magazine ON/OFF
News was redesigned in 2008 and given
further resources. The magazine has done
so well within the industry that it has been
decided to expand the publications from
four issues to six issues a year in 2009.
“As one of the greatest industries, it is
only natural to have a magazine for the
offshore industry. Our ambition is to create
a magazine, which covers the entire industry,
reports news and portrays the industry
for new customers”, Morten Holmager
explains. Morten Holmager is editor of
Great Challenges for
the Danish Offshore Industry
for many Years to come
Unrealistic to believe that the world can manage without oil and gas
The constantly increasing energy consumption
in the world makes it unrealistic
to believe that the world can manage
without fossil fuels like oil and gas.
Alternative energy sources will in many
years to come be insufficient, and the
expansion of for instance wind energy
is characterised by supply shortage. The
Danish oil and gas industry is therefore
facing enormous challenges in the coming
years, with an increased outlook to more
tasks at the global market.
“If the energy consumption increases with
the same speed as in the past, then the global
consumption will be so big in ten years
that it will correspond to us producing 44
million barrels (6,995,441 m 3) more a day
than we are extracting today, according to
the International Energy Agency (IEA).
That corresponds to the entire Norwegian
production in the North Sea – times fifteen”,
Kai B. Olsen, Ramboll Olie & Gas,
explained at Offshore Center Danmark’s
annual meeting in September.
“Danish offshore can with our expertise
within exploitation of marginal fields take
part in making the oil extraction more
efficient. We also have great expertise
within stimulation of wells, for instance by
pumping gas, water or other liquids down
in the underground and in that way force
the oil up. Additionally we have expertise
within horizontal drillings, which are very
effective, as the drillings can be adjusted to
exploit even small layers of oil.”
The expertises of Danish companies within exploitation of marginal fields give a welcome con-
tribution in making oil extraction more effective, and Kai B. Olsen from Ramboll Oil & Gas is
expecting the bustle in the Danish offshore industry to continue for many years to come. Here Kai
B. Olsen speaks at Offshore Center Danmark’s annual meeting in September.
Focus on flexibility
Another core competence of the Danish
offshore industry is a large group of
smaller companies with specialist offshore
competences – (SME’s). These small and
medium-sized enterprises have over the
course of the past thirty years been able to
gear their effort to specialized tasks, and
the companies have been able to change
their processes fast, when there was a need
for it.
“Flexibility will to an even greater extent
be the keyword in the future global
competition. The important thing is not
to give up, as the tasks are there, and our
challenge will be to contribute to make
all parts of the production cycle more efficient
in order to exploit the existing oil
reserves. On a local scale the challenge is
also to attract the qualified young people in
the business. It is an important task in the
coming years to convince the young people
of the fact that there is plenty of work
for decades, when they have finished their
education as for instance an engineer or a
technician”, Kai B. Olsen explains.
ON/OFF NEWS - DECEMBER 08 5
Protection against Attacks
is one of the newest Themes
within the Oil and Gas Industry
New.development.project.
within.Offshore.Center..
Danmark
Be prepared for the worst and think the
best. That is roughly the motto for a new
development project launched by a group
of companies and knowledge institutions,
coordinated by the knowledge and technology
centre Offshore Center Danmark.
The project has been named Offshore Security,
and a project group consisting of
representatives from a North Sea drilling
operator, amongst other companies and
several suppliers of security systems will
in the years to come take part in clearing
the way for cooperation on protection of
offshore platforms, pipelines and other
oil and gas installations that are vulnerable
to terrorist attacks.
Project Offshore Security has focus on security of
offshore installations, and the project will be finalized
with a conference in 2009, where an analysis with
suggestions and directions for the companies will be
presented and discussed.
The project group in Offshore Security: Blue Water
Shipping, Niels Winther & Co., a North Sea drilling
operator, FORCE Technology, Esbjerg Safety Consult,
MacArtney, Siemens and the Institute for Research &
Innovation, The University of Southern Denmark.
6 ON/OFF NEWS - DECEMBER 08
In Scandinavia the focus has so far been
mostly on prevention of occupational
injuries and attainment of optimal safety
for the personnel, but after a suicide
attack on an English oil tanker in Basra
harbour in Iraq in 2005, countries like
Saudi Arabia have devoted five billion
dollars to protection against similar situations,
and there will also be a need for a
Scandinavian or a European model.
“With the Offshore Security project we
have discovered that there at present is
a lack of a compelling overview of authorities
and standards within security of
offshore installations, and seen through
the light of the episode in Iraq, security
is a theme that we must respond to. Offshore
installations are incredibly costly,
and an attack on those or a main pipeline
from a platform to the coast can have immense
consequences”, Allan Christensen,
project coordinator from Offshore Center
Danmark, explains.
Soft aspects
The project Offshore Security will take
two years to complete. First and foremost
the project will provide a compelling
overview of national and international
laws and rules in the security area.
Subsequently the project will identify the
“soft” and human aspects of prevention
of terrorism, such as what the companies
themselves must do in this connection.
According to project coordinator Allan
Christensen, the goal is, among other
things, to help companies that supply or
desire to supply to the offshore oil and
gas business, with useful advice and directions
for prevention of terrorist attacks
on the company itself and its customers.

Important Danish Role on a
Market worth € 13-27 billion
Removal of offshore installations in the North Sea
could be profitable for Danish subcontractors
As Danish operators are very active, and
as there is an increasing activity in the
offshore industry home and abroad, the
market for removal of outworn platforms
and offshore installations – decommissioning
– is expected to become attractive in
the years to come.
“In the Norwegian part of the North Sea
the first tasks concerning removal of obsolete
installations from the great Ekofisk
oil field are already taking place, and a UK
analysis estimates the market for decommissioning
in the UK part of the North
Sea to € 13-27 billion up to 2020”, director
Peter Blach, Offshore Center Danmark explains.
The center has succesfully launched
a development project that focuses on the
opportunities for decommissioning.
Rig repair is already a well-known Danish
expertise, and decommissioning seems to
become one of the new areas of business for
Danish companies. Solely in the UK part of the
North Sea, € 13-27 billion are expected to be
invested in the years to come.
8 ON/OFF NEWS - DECEMBER 08
“The important thing for Danish companies
in the near future is to find a role in
this market. With UK projects in mind
there will undoubtedly be a great demand
for subcontractors, and here Danish companies
have the necessary expertise”, Peter
Blach continues.
A need for consultancy
Peter Blach mentions tasks for companies
that will handle the actual dismantling and
transport to the shore, recycling companies
and a number of consultancy firms in areas
as logistics and environmental consultancy
as obvious suppliers to the foreign general
conductors, emphasising the importance
of consultancy. As an example the Danish
consultancy companies Ramboll Oil &
Gas and COWI have already secured large
decommissioning contracts in the Norwegian
and in the UK sector.
“One may imagine that the most obvious
tasks in the area of decommissioning
are recycling of steel and other materials,
but our analysis suggests that consulting
services within planning of the procedures
as well as the logistical part are of greater
value. And here Offshore Center Danmark
in cooperation with the individual companies
assists in creating a dialogue with
countries and operators abroad, in order to
ensure tasks for the Danish companies”,
Peter Blach explains.
Blacksmiths continue
with Offshore Speciality
EUC Vest is among the prime educational institutions, which has brought the opportunity for
offshore education into focus.
The educational institution EUC Vest in
Esbjerg will also in the future school the
Danish blacksmiths, so they are properly
suited for the jobs on the platforms and
drilling rigs in the North Sea. A 3-year
experiment with courses with continuing
education courses has turned out well.
The offshore activities in the North Sea
are so comprehensive that they generate
around 6,000 onshore jobs in West Jutland.
It was also the demand from offshore companies,
which three years ago encouraged
EUC Vest to establish a four week extra
course for boilermakers. EUC Vest is the
first and as of yet the only technical college
that provides courses in the speciality.
“The blacksmith education is originally
customised as a construction smith, and
many of the newly qualified blacksmiths
therefore had to take additional courses to
work offshore. We chose to offer them four
weeks extra, where they could specialize
in either repair and maintenance, welding
or automatic control. Furthermore we
educate them to master the English technical
terms, which are used in the offshore
business”, team leader at EUC Vest, Per
Mathiasen, explains.
Approved by evaluation group
Although the course is extended with the
apprenticeship lasting four weeks, there
is still no cost for employers or apprentices
– The course is financed through the
subvention rules that also apply to other
educations. The advantage of giving the
apprentices the necessary competences
as a part of the four year long education
is that they in this way quite quickly can
10 ON/OFF NEWS - DECEMBER 08
board the helicopters in Esbjerg Airport, as
soon as they have the apprentice certificate.
As an apprentice, only a minority can
participate in tasks on platforms or rigs.
“There were some difficulties with the extra
course to start with, but we have seen a
Kristian Christiansen is one of the students in
EUC Vest, who has taken the extra offshore
blacksmith course.
positive development with each new class.
Now the experiment has been evaluated by
a group of representatives from Industriens
Uddannelser, unions and the Ministry of
Education. It was hereafter decided that
the education as offshore blacksmith will
continue and will be re-evaluated in two
years again. Then it will be made permanent”,
Per Mathiasen informs.
Certain to get jobs offshore
It has in the test period taken a little while
to capture the offshore companies’ attention
for the special blacksmith education,
but EUC Vest has to their great satisfaction
seen that every six boilermaker now take
the extra course.
Price
325 dkk.
43 Euro
+ postage
764 pages
“This number will grow. Simultaneously,
I think that this will set a fashion, so there
in the long term will be provided extra
courses for apprentices on all of our metal
educations”, Per Mathiasen states.
One of the apprentices, who early in his
educational course has chosen to become
an offshore smith, is Kristian Christiansen.
The 21-year-old blacksmith apprentice
is employed at Granly A/S, which for a
number of years has worked offshore:
”I chose the blacksmith course, as I like
working with metal. I would like to work
offshore, and therefore it is fine that we
have the opportunity to include all the
basic things in our education. And they
always need people in this business”, Kristian
ON/OFF NEWS - DECEMBER 08 11
A Need for SME’s
The offshore industry is dependent on
competent sub-suppliers
The Danish offshore industry has faced
and is facing a tremendous expansion, both
nationally and internationally. Nationally,
while it is true that the recovery of oil in
absolute numbers in the Danish part of the
North Sea is stagnating, still new and more
effective techniques for better exploitation
of existing reserves are increasing the relative
amounts of oil that can be exploited.
This makes room for small and mediumsized
enterprises, which with their expertise
can advise and support the oil operators
and the general contractors on making
specialized processes more efficient and
hence increasing production capacity.
At the same time the industry is in a good
position within the rapidly increasing
market for offshore wind turbines, with
the wind turbine manufacturers Vestas and
Siemens Wind Power taking the lead.
The above are some of the reasons for the
expected increase in the total number of
employees in the Danish offshore industry
from 13,000 in 2008 to 20,000 by 2020.
“The future prospects definitely look
bright, and also for small and middle-sized
enterprises, there are incredibly good
perspectives on establishing activities in
the offshore industry. There is a demand in
many subject areas, from niche companies
in the steel and construction industry to
process surveillance and management and
12 ON/OFF NEWS - DECEMBER 08
to consulting and certification. For companies
with the right approach, it is possible
to create an enterprising company”, Peter
Blach, director of Offshore Center Danmark,
emphasizes.
Involve the whole organization
An analysis made by professor Svend Ole
Madsen from the University of Southern
Denmark supports the expectation of a
massive growth in the years to come.
Svend Ole Madsen therefore confirms that
there are good earning opportunities in
the offshore industry. It, however, as usual
requires careful considerations.
“The offshore industry makes increasingly
greater demands to sub suppliers, and
there is a need for a professionalization in
whole the organization, if you as a SME
want to engage yourself as a supplier in the
offshore industry. Employees on all levels
must be involved, as the decision includes
more than just the leadership. The companies
must as a minimum have a professional
board. Additionally, there must be
openness in all corners of the organization,
so that all are focused on a common goal”,
Svend Ole Madsen explains.
Useful cases
Many companies have begun this process
in order to professionalize the organization,
while others still are considering it. In
the following section a number of companies
are telling about their experiences
with operating in the offshore industry
and their considerations in order to secure
a part of the growth that the industry is
awaiting.
Professor Svend Ole Madsen,
University of Southern Denmark,
has formulated a checklist for
companies. The checklist is useful
in connection with the professionalization
of an organization.
• Have a clear strategy
• Produce a realistic budget
• Include the whole organization
in the process
• Allocate resources to employee
skill development
• Devise new safety policies
• Devise clear policies for quality
and documentation control
• Participate in networking events
Lowering the Barriers
Also in 2009 there will be focus on SME’s in the offshore industry
A handbook for new companies in
the offshore industry, a conference for
sub-suppliers and One-to-One meetings
between potential customers and partners.
Small and medium-sized enterprises
(SME´s) will be assisted and just like in
the previous year, there will in 2009 be an
increased focus also on SME’s and their
opportunities to expand.”The offshore
industry poses immense opportunities,
if you as a company understand and are
capable of following the guidelines, which
the customers set. There will for many
decades be a need for finding and extracting
oil and gas, maintaining and developing
installations and creating entirely new
products and initiatives in the industry.
The operators and the larger companies
need qualified suppliers. Therefore we in
Offshore Center Danmark make a dedicated
effort to help the companies in the
market”, Peter Blach, director at Offshore
Center Danmark, explains.
Support and consultancy
During the recent years, Offshore Center
Danmark has coordinated a development
project with a theme concentrating on
SME’s, and it is those experiences that
form the basis of support and consultancy
for the companies.
A conference for and about SME’s in
May 2008 drew a large audience, amongst
SME´s and amongst the larger companies
looking for suppliers. This indicates that
many companies want advise and help to
move on. During the conference Offshore
Center Danmark launched their new
tutorial ”Offshore Hvordan- Håndbog for
SMV’er” (Offshore – How – Handbook
for SME’s), which features advice on how
a company could tackle the offshore industry.
”The companies face some strategic
and organizational challenges in connection
with the professionalization, which
many companies must go through. It is
a process of change, which the companies
themselves are behind, but Offshore
Center Danmark can in several other respects
help shatter prejudices and barriers
and support the companies, which want to
grow or invest in the offshore industry. We
Peter Blach continues.
”As of 2009 Offshore Center Danmark has
achieved status as the national Innovation
Network for the offshore industry, with
co-funding from the Ministry of Science,
Technology and Innovation. So apart from
serving as a knowledge centre, we will develop,
maintain and distribute the results,
which the industry creates. We believe that
this network will be a good tool for the
SME’s, and I hope that many companies
will make use of the opportunity.”
Development rather
than Management
A.combination.of.research.and.practical.engineering.has.
made.a.small.Danish.company.a.worldwide.player.
Forget about the buzzwords from the
management books, and focus in stead
on R&D and the development of cutting-edge
technology. That’s the message
from LIC Engineering in Esbjerg.
“We trust our judgement, and use the
in-depth knowledge of this company,
its products, and the offshore business.
Personally, I am very sceptical towards
any management theories, and when you
ask me about how we ‘professionalise’
our business, you are just using another
management buzzword”.
That is clear talk from a man with 11
years of experience in the subsea engineering
company. Morten Christensen
is head of LIC Engineering division in
Esbjerg, where he has just expanded the
workforce with 20 percent by taking on
two new engineers. He declares without
a doubt that the LIC-way of doing things
actually works.
North and South
“At the moment, we have two projects
of special interest. The one is expanding
oil fields for Shell in the south-western
part of the North Sea by using mono-pile
jackets. It is our own concept developed
from our experiences with sea-mills off
the British Islands”, he explains.
14 ON/OFF NEWS - DECEMBER 08
Another project that LIC Engineering
expects will be in focus 2009 is a project
far off the coast of Western Africa. It is
too far for pipelines, but LIC Engineering
developed automatic subsea locking
devices to ensure that the flexible risers
to the FPSO stay in place.
“This is cutting-edge technology. We
created the fitting-ends from scratch.
They were developed, designed, and
tested meaning this is turnkey contract.
Two local companies in Esbjerg – IC
Nielsen and Esbjerg Spåntagning – are
subcontractors on producing the devices,
and NKT Flexibles is the customer”, says
Morten Christensen.
Challenging projects ahead
The small Danish company has by now
worked in most continents – “we are
worldwide except for the South Pole”
– and Morten Christensen hopes that
soon new projects will also take on closer
to the company base; in Femern Belt.
LIC Engineering was deeply involved in
preparations for the bridges across the
Great Belt and Oresund, and the company
is now taking part in the first phase
of the environmental research that paves
the way for the future bridge.
“We have challenging projects ahead of
us in 2009, and we have just expanded
our workforce. We like to think we are
the leading Danish company on pipelines
and valve stations working with customers
like DONG, Maersk, Shell and Exxon.
But we are still a small company with
just 22 persons including the CEO, so
don’t expect professional board members
or things like that. We know what we
are doing from years of experience, and
we intend to keep doing that the years to
come”, Morten Christensen states.
Tailor-made Power Generation
Solutions
Part of the Dutch-owned Pon Group,
Pon Power and its offshore operations,
Pon Power Oil & Gas, supplies Caterpillar
diesel engines in the Netherlands,
Denmark, Norway and Sweden for many
applications.
While sister company Pon Equipment
represents Caterpillar in earth-moving
equipment, Pon Power focuses on the
marketing, sales and distribution of Caterpillar
and MaK engines for propulsion and
power generation.
“Globally the group has about 10,000
employees, so we are not a small company,”
says Verner Andersen, Pon Power’s
Business Development Manager for Scandinavia,
who has had tremendous success
in the offshore business, since he stared up
as the sole offshore business manager in
Denmark half a decade ago.
“There are about 1,000 employees in the
Caterpillar-related operations, while the
offshore business employs about 100 people,
and 60 of them are service engineers
with offshore certification.”
Tailored to the task
The Caterpillar engines are used as power
generators on oil and gas platforms, rigs,
semi-submersibles and other installations.
“Nearly all of the solutions we supply
are tailored to the task, but they are based
on standard engines,” Verner Andersen
states, “and we are supplying to new types
of installation. In 2008 we have supplied
special generators for a new design in
self-propelled high-loaders developed by
Remora in Norway.”
Today, buoys are used to move pipes and
hoses to the tankers that load oil from a
field storage tank.
“What we have delivered is a system with
three large CAT engines that propels this
new unit to the tanker, and holds it in place
while the oil is transferred – a period of
up to 24 hours – using dynamic positioning
based on data from satellites,” Verner
Andersen explains. “Remora will build a
whole fleet of these, and we are the main
supplier of these engines. They have a
generator at one end, to supply electricity
from driving pumps and moving pipes and
hoses, and an Azimuth Thruster at the other
end, so they move through the water.”
Demand based on prognoses
The demand for offshore generators derives
from high offshore activity.
“Much of the demand is speculative, based
on prognosis for the demand for and price
of oil – but how great this speculative
demand will be under this financial crisis
remains to be seen”. Verner Andersen continues:
“It will certainly be felt in 2009.
Next year we will also see a decision from
ConocoPhillips concerning the supply of
generators to its Ekofisk field expansion.”
“We are hoping to get an order for power
units based on Caterpillar engines and generators
for the expansion, which involves
about 20 new platforms. The contract
should be awarded early in 2009.”
Pon Power Oil & Gas was formed in 2001,
when the activities of Pon Power in the
Netherlands, Denmark and Norway were
combined with parts of the Pon Group.
The company regards Scandinavia as one
market, which is serviced by offices in Esbjerg
and Oslo, where there is a great deal
of autonomy. But as the company is a part
of the largest privately owned group in the
Netherlands, and has Dutch top management,
strategic considerations derive from
Holland.
“Safety, know-how and delivery assurance
are the controlling factors for our business,”
Verner Andersen, who refers to the
group’s 30 years of experience and specialisation
in a niche area as its strength, says
in a final remark.
Look abroad
SystemTeknik.in.Aalborg.hands.out.experiences..
For SystemTeknik A/S, 2008 has been a
year, where the company has increasingly
been looking abroad within the offshore
industry. The Aalborg company, which
develops, produces and sells electrical distribution
boards and control cabinets with
matching software, has among other things
established a company in Norway.
“This we have done in order to be closer to
our Norwegian customers. We emphasize
the importance of building commercial
relations, not just in Norway, but generally
both nationally and internationally,” managing
director for SystemTeknik, Karsten
Ingemann Pedersen, explains. In the longer
run he desires to get more relations in Asia.
It works
Internally in the company with 100 employees,
continuing education has been
emphasized on all levels, and a task group
continually has LEAN-activities working.
“The idea is to be up to date, fine-tune the
company and show our image publically.
We may not be the first company to use
the strategies, which we use, given that we
emphasize marketing and participate in
trade fairs such as ONS 2008 in Stavanger,
but it works!”, Karsten Ingemann Pedersen
explains.
In 2009 the company will to an even
higher extent work on building networks.
“With the offshore-competences that we
have, we can see some new solutions on
16 ON/OFF NEWS - DECEMBER 08
needs in the industry. This we will develop
even more in 2009”, Karsten Ingemann
Pedersen states.
Of great value
In 2007 SystemTeknik was bought by the
investment company Jysk-Fynsk Kapital
and with four leading employees as
co-owners. In connection with the change
of ownership a new board was elected,
consisting of experienced industry professionals
and leaders.
“The board members have just the competences
matching our company. The experience,
insight and knowledge that they
contribute with relative to our business is
of great value to us, not to mention the network
which they have brought with them,”
Karsten Ingemann Pedersen explains. He
also advises small and middle-sized entreprises
to assemble a professional board,
just as SystemTeknik.
Look abroad!
“If I am to give another good piece of advice,
then I will recommend companies to
make sure to look abroad in order to cultivate
new markets. It may be that you have
a tendency to keep on familiar ground, but
if the market tightens, then it is by looking
abroad that you can extend your network”.

A Pump is not
just a Pump
Olesen.&.Jensen.expands.on.a.basis.of..
specialized.offshore.knowledge
Test, maintenance and repair have become
some of the largest areas of business for
suppliers and sub-suppliers to the offshore
industry. Traditional craftsman businesses
have over the years become suppliers of
complex and demanding solutions to the
oil and gas industry, and among those is
the electrical installation company Olesen
& Jensen with head office in Esbjerg.
From the establishment as a traditional
electrical contracting firm in 1919 until
today, the company has been subject to a
significant change. 110 control technicians,
electricians, installers, IT technicians and
electro mechanics cooperate on various
industry and process tasks that often
require special and complex solutions. A
specific electro-mechanic division handles
the tasks that are demanded by operators
on the North Sea and in other oil producing
areas.
Outstanding year
The recent years the company’s growth
has been tremendous, and more personnel
have been employed. Nevertheless there is
great focus on unifying the efforts and consolidating
the company to the future.
“With the right qualifications and the right
approach to the industry’s demands of
dependability, reliability and loyalty, it is
possible to run a reasonable business. But
the company is also required to keep their
products up to date with the constantly
increasing demands from the offshore
industry, and we are therefore very aware
of that we continually need to update the
company”, Kenn Pedersen, Olesen &
Jensen, explains.
Focus on expectations
The main effort has been to ensure the
necessary workshop, test and crane facilities
to handle even the greatest generators
and motors.
In 1988 the company was expanded to
include a 1,400 m 2 electro-mechanical
workshop that today is the company’s
service core. Here generators and motors
are overrun, wrapped, repaired and tested.
Today Olesen & Jensen services a large
number of customers in both the offshore
industry, wind turbine industry, power
industry and shipping industry.
Olesen & Jensen handles the largest motors
and generators in their huge workshop and
also believes that they can handle the future
in a competitive offshore industry.
“As a supplier we continually have to
adjust, and we emphasize the importance
of having the right certificates – like for instance
our ATEX certificate for reparation
of electro motors – and therefore we focus
much on which expectations the customers
have to efficiency and reliability. A pump
is not just a pump. When it is installed
offshore, it has to work, and if we have not
done a proper job, then it can have great
costs for the customer, as he may have to
replace the pump or repair it on site”, production
manager Kenn Pedersen, Olesen
& Jensen, explains.
The inner lines
With a customer list consisting of the largest
operators in the oil/gas and offshore
wind sector, Olesen & Jensen has already
proven their reason for being. If the com-
pany is to be developed in the years to come,
it is therefore the inner lines that have to be
strengthened, and that happens through a
forward looking strategy.
“We are very aware of the demands that are
made to increased professionalization. We
work daily on strengthening the organization
and following the development closely, but
I think that we already today have a healthy
and well consolidated company that is prepared
for the challenges of the future,” Kenn
Pedersen states.
Showing the Process in
3D Animation
A.member.company.of.Offshore.Center.Danmark,.DAVINCI..
3D-animation or with other words 3Dcommunication
is becoming popular in the
industry, where there is a need for being
able to communicate hard-to-reach situations
or demonstrate things that simply are
impossible to film.
There is also a need for showing safety
procedures, inner parts of pipes and machines
or user and assembly instructions.
All these processes and descriptions can
now be done in photo real surroundings, so
for instance glass actually looks like glass
by means of 3D technique.
Behind the technique is DAVINCI development
a/s in Billund, which currently
employs 27 employees and lately has completed
an order for an offshore oil operator
in Denmark.
“3D animation makes it easier to communicate
messages to customers, employees
or to the public. It has to be done fast and
efficiently, as it may be easier to show
than to explain. Thereby time is saved. An
animation says more than 1,000 pictures,”
Sales Manager Søren Kavin, DAVINCI
development a/s, explains.
“One of our other examples is the company
Dantherm, which wanted to describe
their UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply).
The company chose to do it with a
3D-animation, as it could show exactly the
scenario, which they wanted. The animation
was produced in different file sizes
and resolutions, so that it could be used both
in presentations to new potential customers
on trade fairs or on their website which
required a smaller version”, Søren Kavin
recounts.
3D is particularly suitable for demonstration
of safety procedures. If an animation on
new safety procedures is created, then the
relevant employees can see the animation
in otherwise unutilised time: For instance
during production stops, helicopter transport
or in periods without time pressure.
Apart from being occupied with 3D-animation
and visualization, DAVINCI development
a/s has a division for mechanical construction
and a division, where prototypes in
plastic and metal (RPT/RM) are produced.
Falck Nutec gains a US
Gulf of Mexico Position
Falck Nutec expands with the acquisition of Alford
The Danish company Falck Nutec has
acquired a majority interest in the Alford
Group, a leading US provider of a range
of training and safety services to the
offshore oil and gas industry. Falck’s
training division, Falck Nutec, is a world
leader in rescue and safety courses,
especially for the offshore sector and the
maritime sector.
The acquisition provides Falck with a
solid basis in order to pursue further
Falck business activities in the USA and
the surrounding region.
“We are pleased to join Barry Alford and
his team to form the base for Falck to
expand into the oil and gas safety market
in the region. Over time we plan to use
this as a platform for our other activities
to the US market,” Falck CEO Allan
Soegaard Larsen states.
Patented safe welding enclosure system
Alford is the leading Gulf of Mexico
provider of safety training, safety personnel,
safety services and related services,
including a patented safe enclosure for
hazardous welding.
Founded in 1996, the business has grown
considerably and offers a wide range
of safety training courses, for example
water survival, marine training, confined
space training, fire fighting and first aid
courses.
Among Alford’s safety services is the
patented safe welding enclosure system,
Hazardous Atmospheric Zone Telemetry
(HAZTEC). This is an automated
monitoring and control system offering
a safe enclosure where welding can be
performed in hazardous locations. The
process eliminates shut-in time for platforms
offering oil majors the key benefit
of no loss of production during repairs
and maintenance.
“Falck and Alford foresee significant
cross-selling opportunities and the addition
of HAZTEC to the Falck Training
portfolio adds an important dimension to
Falck’s position as a global safety services
provider,” Allan Soegaard Larsen
explains.
In the future the business will be branded
as Falck Alford.
ON/OFF NEWS - SEPTEMBER 08 25
The Market for Offshore Wind
Turbines in tremendous Growth
Expectations.of.annual..
total.turnover.of.€.6.7.billion.
before.2012
Increased focus on sustainable energy
creates growth in the already growing
market for offshore wind turbines
in Europe. Until 2012 a five to six-fold
increase is expected in the market from
the present 100-150 new offshore wind
turbines a year to 600-700, and this trend
is expected to continue until 2030.
“We are dealing with a market of € 6.7
billion a year, if the EU’s goals for sustainable
energy are to be fulfilled”, CEO
Kaj Lindvig, from A2SEA in Fredericia,
states. A2SEA is among other things the
world’s leading supplier of transportation
of and installation of offshore wind
turbines.
Can easily take part
In recent years the highly specialized
company has spent large sums on
specialized ships for installation of wind
turbines, nevertheless A2SEA has a hard
time keeping up with the demand. Their
supply ships have been booked for tasks
in both 2009 and 2010, and new numbers
from the European Wind Energy Association
(EWEA) do not suggest less activity
in the business in the future – quite
the contrary, actually.
“We have experienced tremendous
growth in the offshore business, but we
are facing further growth in the years to
come. Additionally, EWEA predicts that
more and more wind turbines will be
placed offshore, as it has been difficult to
find appropriate onshore locations. And
26 ON/OFF NEWS - DECEMBER 08
Danish offshore companies can easily
take part in the competition of upcoming
tasks in for instance Germany, England
and Sweden. Apart from actual wind
turbine manufacturers, a range of Danish
companies have specialized in everything
from production of wind turbine
foundations to electrical components for
analysis of the sea floor conditions and
consultancy. Also, high oil prices and
political endorsement help securing the
possibility of long-term investments”,
Kaj Lindvig explains.
Important to keep up
Concurrently with the increasing bustle
of both Danish and foreign suppliers,
bottlenecks in the supply of everything
from steel and wind turbines to electronics
and supply ships emerge. Siemens
Wind Power has put the problems into
perspective by reserving two million m 2
to the construction of a new wind turbine
factory in Esbjerg. A2SEA has several
times expanded with more ships.
The supply shortage can create delays
in all parts of the supply chain, but for
Danish companies it is all about taking
part, while there is a positive trend in the
business.
“The market is naturally centered around
Vestas and Siemens Wind Power, both
having headquarters in Denmark. But
the market for wind turbines is about
many other things than the turbines. In
Denmark we have achieved an offshore
expertise that is not seen anywhere else
in the world. This position may be more
difficult to maintain as countries like
Germany, England and Sweden focus
so determined on offshore wind energy,
but it is important to be ahead all the
time, and in a time where there is supply
shortage, there will be a demand for
Danish companies – and that trend will
last in many years to come”, director
Peter Blach, Offshore Center Danmark,
predicts.

Invests € 3.5 Billion
In 2009 an investment of € 3.5 billion
is expected in exploration for new oil
reserves in the Norwegian part of the
North Sea. That is € 460 million more
than any other year, Statistik Sentralbyrå
(SSB) informs.
The increasing oil prices and a high success
rate in the Norwegian underground
are some of the reasons why the operators
are turning up for the work with
finding more oil.
Exploration Agreement with Chevron
Maersk Oil Gulf of Mexico Three LLC,
a subsidiary of Maersk Oil America,
has signed a collaborative exploration
agreement for a multi-well package with
Chevron U.S.A. Inc. (Chevron) in the
central deep water US Gulf of Mexico.
Under this agreement, a number of
exploration wells will be drilled in the
area with the first four due to commence
over the next six months. In addition to
Chevron, it is expected that there will be
other co-owners, varying from prospect
to prospect. Maersk Oil’s working interest
will be around 20%.
The assignment of lease interests to
Maersk Oil under this agreement is subject
to approval by the US Department of
Interior’s Minerals Management Service
(MMS).
growth by acquisitions as well as organic
growth.
Rovsing Dynamics and
Yokogawa team up
Rovsing Dynamics’ OPENpredictor
solution for machinery health prediction
will now be offered as an integrated part
of Yokogawa’s VigilantPlant solution for
complete industrial automation as Rovsing
Dynamics and Yokogawa Europe
team up.
The cooperation covers solutions for
offshore oil and gas production, FPSOs,
downstream LNG production facilities,
refineries and onshore gas compression
stations.
“The oil and gas industry faces the challenges
of a shorter reaction time to adapt
to the changing market demand and
lack of skilled and experienced people.
This increases the need for automated
operation and maintenance solutions,
where tailored information easily can
be retrieved and presented according to
different users’ needs. Traditional standalone
condition monitoring systems and
operational management systems need
to integrate and exchange information.
OPENpredictor incorporated into
VigilantPlant® provides a comprehensive
solution to achieve best in class asset
availability”, Rovsing Dynamics explains
in a press release.
15 years, and with the positive match
between our services and development
plans in the Middle Eastern oil industry
it seemed a logical next step to open
potential for expansion”, Jesper
New Oil Findings in Angola
Oil reserves equaling 5,000 barrels
(795 m 3 ) of oil per day were found in
block 15/06 and block 31 outside Angola
by the African west coast. Sonangul is
a concessionaire of the fields, which are
owned by a consortium consisting of
among others BP, Esso, and StatoilHydro,
and it is the 16th find in block 31, whereas
further exploration work drillings have to
be carried out for block 15/06.
The find of further oil reserves is interesting,
as Maersk Oil & Gas has an interest
Vestas moves to Århus
Vestas needs additional production and stor-
ing facilities and moves parts of the company
from Randers to Århus.
In order to get room and consolidate
several activities under one roof, the
world’s largest wind turbine manufacturer,
Vestas, has decided to move its head-
quarters from Randers to Århus in 2011.
“Vestas believes that Århus can provide
the facilities that are needed to attract and
hold on to the required Danish and expatriate
employees. The new headquarters
are to be built next to Vestas Technology
R&D’s new development centre in
Skejby, where Vestas has bought a plot of
73,800 m 2 ”, the company announces in a
press release.
The functions that will be moved to
Århus – Direction, Group Finance & and
Operations, Group Treasury, Group communications
and Contract Review – today
employ more than 250 employees.
30 ON/OFF NEWS - DECEMBER 08
The move to Århus will simultaneously
give Vestas Offshore, Vestas People &
Culture and the global IT-function that
today employ more than 600 employees
in Randers, the possibility to continue
their expansion in Randers.
The relocation of parts of Vestas’ activities
occurs in the wake of the competitor
Siemens Wind Power’s decision on
establishing new production and storage
facilities in Esbjerg with the opportunity
for direct shipping from Esbjerg harbour,
rather than transporting the wind turbines
from the company’s Danish headquarters
in Brande.
A2SEA acquires a Barge
JB109
A2SEA A/S, one of the leading contractors
specialising in the transport,
installation and service of offshore wind
turbines, has announced that they has
acquired the installation barge JB109 and
related assets from the Dutch supplier
of barges of the jack-up type, Jack-Up
Barge B.V. for an undisclosed price.
In connection with the taking-over, the
barge will be renamed Sea Worker.
A2SEA is experiencing an explosive
development and did only one year ago
acquire their first jack-up rig, Sea Jack
(Formerly named Jumping Jack). After
the acquisition of Sea Worker, A2SEA’s
fleet is now counting two rigs and two
special purpose vessels, meaning that
A2SEA can now install the foundations
as well as the topsides and larger turbines
for offshore wind farms. The additional
installation rig will give A2SEA the
flexibility to bid for many more offshore
contracts using their vessels separately or
in combination, the company states.
“The acquisition has further strengthened
A2SEA’s position in the market as
the leading contractor within installation
of offshore wind farms”, CEO Jens
Frederik Hansen says.
“We are now in a position enabling us
to bid for a larger number and more
challenging projects. In addition, this acquisition
has enabled us to offer a wider
range of services, e.g. higher installation
capacity for the waters west of Great
Britain where we are experiencing an
increasing activity.”
The European market for wind power is
growing rapidly. The number of megawatt
produced offshore is expected to
increase from an estimated capacity of
750 MW in 2006 to more than 12,000
MW in 2015.
Ingenious engineering makes a difference---
Ramboll Oil & Gas works on some of the most challenging engineering
projects in the world: one of the world's longest pipeline projects, a large
underground gas storage facility, floating production units, great platform
and wind turbine projects all over the world. Our growth rate has been
100 per cent over the past 3 years and we are still growing. Interested?
