Adenovirus VaccineThe Adenovirus Type 4 and Type 7 Vaccine,Live, Oral, is used by the Department ofDefense to prevent adenovirus-related respiratorydisease in military recruits during basictraining. Because the adenovirus infectioncan spread from person to person throughthe air (sneezing and coughing) and by personalcontact, the close quarters of the recruitenvironment make recruits highly susceptibleto exposure and infection.Adenovirus infections in military recruitsare associated with symptoms that includecough, fever, runny nose, headaches, sorethroat, and eye infections. These illnessesoften lead to missed training and some recruitshave to repeat parts of the trainingcycle.Vaccine AdministrationThe adenovirus vaccine is two orally administered,coated tablets, containing liveadenovirus types 4 and 7.Initial-entry military recruits, 17 years oldor older, will receive a one-time dose of bothtablets (types 4 and 7), along with other immunizations,during in-processing.Each tablet is swallowed whole. Do not chewor crush tablets. Individuals experiencingvomiting and/or diarrhea and those with moderateto severe acute illness will not receive thevaccine until illnesses are resolved.Adenovirus Vaccine FactsThe adenovirus vaccine types 4 and 7 preventsmost illnesses caused by these types ofadenoviruses. The most common symptomsare related to respiratory disease.Individuals who receive the adenovirus vaccine,which contains live adenovirus, may shedthe virus in their stool for up to 28 days aftervaccination.Practicing good personal hygiene and infectioncontrol are important factors to help preventspreading the virus. Frequent hand washingis the most effective method for preventingthe spread of the virus.To prevent the spread of virus through shedding,it is important to:Wash or sanitize your hands frequentlyWash or sanitize your hands after usingthe restroomWash or sanitize your hands before eatingAnyone who comes in contact with thelive vaccine virus and has not been vaccinatedis at risk of exposure.
