Every eight minutes theSuperDuct sensor checks its environment for dirt, humidity otherconditions that normally interfere with sensor operation, and automaticallyadjusts its sensitivity to compensate. The result is unparalleledreliability and rock solid stability – two features essential toany duct smoke detection application.Sensitivity testing and diagnostics reveal some of the most excitinginnovations built into SuperDuct. With the ingenious SuperDuctremote test station, a sensitivity test can be performed at any timefrom the safety and comfort of a maintenance office or utility room.Operated either by key or by magnet, the one-gang station alsoperforms alarm tests for detectors connected to a single controller.Detectors may also be tested at the controller via a test switch, orthey can be tested individually in the field with a simple-to-operatemagnetic test tool. ConfigurationSuperDuct detectors and controllers feature a unique modular designthat speeds installation and simplifies maintenance. Separatehousings enable access to either the controller or detector withoutaffecting the other.Underside conduit knockouts, rubber cable glands, and optionalwater-resistant gaskets keep contaminants away from components,ensuring years of trouble-free service. When cleaning isrequired, the detector comes apart easily and snaps back togetherin seconds.The detector assembly provides easy access to the smoke sensor,its wiring connections, sample and exhaust tube fittings, and thesmoke chamber itself. Air enters the assembly by means of an airsampling tube (ordered separately), and exits by means of a six-inchexhaust tube (included). The sampling tube may be installed fromeither the air ductside of the assemblyor from inside thesensor compartment,as preferred by theinstaller. (The exhausttube must beinstalled from the airduct side.) Samplingtubes may be rotatedin 45-degree incrementsso that airholescan be alignedto allow the unit to bemounted at virtuallyany angle relative tothe air flow.The controller canaccommodate up totwo detectors. One orboth detectors maybe installed remotelyfrom the controller.A Category 5 wiringharnesses (orderedseparately) is used for interconnection when detectors are installedremotely from the controller. Harnesses are terminated with RJ45connectors and come in lengths of up to 15 feet. Controllers anddetectors may also be ordered with terminal blocks for interconnectionwiring. All models come with terminal blocks for customer connectionof the on-board relays to external equipment. High voltagepower input terminals are suitable for #22 AWG to #12 AWG wirewhile all other terminals can handle #22 AWG to #14 AWG wires.SuperDuct Highlight: Remote Test/Reset StationSuperDuct’s ingenious labor-savingRemote Test/Reset stations not onlyprovide remote alarm testing, they alsoannunciate detector dirt levels. Testscan be performed quickly and safely– without having to climb to the roof.Magnetically-operated and key-operatedone-gang models are available.SuperDuct OverviewOutsideApplicationSuperDuct smoke detection is ideally suited to HVAC applicationswhere early indication of combustion is required within the confinedspace of ventilation ductwork.Duct detectors are usually installed on the supply duct after the airfilters, or in the return air stream prior to being diluted by outside air.To avoid the effects of stratification, install the sensor inlet tube aminimum of six duct widths beyond any bends in the duct.SuperDuct detectors continually sample air flow in the HVAC ductand initiate an alarm condition whenever smoke is detected. Analarm is activated when the quantity (percent obscuration) of combustionproducts in that air sample exceeds the detector’s sensitivitysetting.Air velocity in the duct as low as 100 ft/min. maintains adequateair flow into the sensor smoke chamber through air-holes in theair sampling tube anddischarges throughthe exhaust tube.SuperDuct air samplingtubes must be installedwith the inlet holesfacing the airstream.Sampling tubes may berotated in 45-degreeincrements so that airholescan be alignedto allow the unit to bemounted in virtuallyany angle relative tothe airflow.SuperDuct detectorsare engineered to operateoptimally under theharsh environmentalconditions frequentlyfound in HVAC ductwork.Nonetheless,before installing thedetector, test the ductair velocity, temperature,and humidity to verify that it is within the operating range ofthe SuperDuct detector.
