Welcome to St. Nicholas HospitalWhile you are hospitalized at St. Nicholas Hospital, some ofyour treatment will be under the guidance of hospitalists.Hospitalists are internal medicine physicians who specializein the care of patients within the hospital setting.Q U E S T I O N S & A N S W E R S A B O U T T H E S T. N I C H O L A S H O S P I TA L I S T P R O G R A MWho will be my hospitalist whileI am in the hospital?You may see more than one hospitalist during yourstay. Each physician, however, works as a memberof the hospitalist team to assure you prompt,high-quality care. Each day, physicians who areinvolved in your care will discuss your case. Thissharing of information will help determine thebest course of treatment for you.Can I ask questions?Please do! You are a key partner...the more youunderstand about your illness and treatment, thebetter you can prevent complications and futureproblems. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or seekclarification on anything you don’t understand.When will my hospitalist see me?In a full-time hospitalist program, your hospitalistwill see you at least once daily. If your care requiresmore attention, the hospitalist may see you severaltimes a day. Our Hospitalists are available 24/7 soyour needs are covered on nights, weekends, andduring the day based on your primary carephysician’s preference.When can my family speak tothe hospitalist?We suggest that you and your family talk with thehospitalist at the same time. That will promotecommunication and allow all of you to have yourquestions answered. The best time to meet withthe hospitalist is when he or she visits your room.We suggest you keep a notepad near your bed tojot down questions you or your family membershave. If it’s not possible for you all to meet with thehospitalist, a family member who has a questioncan leave a note with your nurse requesting a callfrom the hospitalist.Will my family doctor continueto be informed about my illnessand treatment?We strive to keep your family doctor involved inyour treatment and informed about every aspect ofyour illness and care. While you are hospitalized,your family doctor may visit you and discuss yourcase with the hospitalist. When you are discharged,your doctor will receive a complete summary,including test results and any medications given.This often is in your doctor’s office before you aredischarged, allowing your doctor to provide anyfollow-up care you need.What if I need another specialistwhile I am in the hospital?The hospitalist coordinates your treatment and willhelp you get specialty care when needed. As yourcondition improves, the specialist may return youto the hospitalist for care.Will the use of a Hospitalistincrease my hospital bill?No – only one physician per discipline per day willbill you. You may receive a separate bill from yourprimary care physician for days you are not underthe care of the hospitalists. Other physicians whoprovide service outside the internal medicine realmwill bill separately through their office.Who will I receive a bill from?■ SNH for your hospital stay and cost incurredwith the hospital■ Primary physician for managing your careon weekdays.■ Hospitalist for managing your care onweekends.■ Other specialists who provide services
