The 1980s - The <strong>Outrigger</strong>Chain UnitesPrior to 1984, the company was composed of threeseparate chains: the <strong>Outrigger</strong> Hotels, the Reef Hotelsand the Waikiki Hotels. Consolidating in the ‘80s,the company became <strong>Outrigger</strong> Hotels Hawaii andmost of the properties took on the <strong>Outrigger</strong> name.A number of major hotel purchases also were madein the ‘80s, and by 1986, the acquisition of two moreproperties pushed the chain’s room-count overthe 7,000 mark, making <strong>Outrigger</strong> Hotels Hawaii atthe time the largest chain in the State of Hawaii.1989 marked a year of transformation for the company.<strong>Outrigger</strong> sold six of its Waikiki hotels to outsideinvestors but maintained long-term managementcontracts in each case. The capital raised from thesesales was employed to fund renovation projects andexpansion efforts beyond Waikiki.Also in 1989, the baton of day-to-day operations waspassed from the second generation of Kelley familymembers to the third, when Richard Kelley’s son-in-law,David Carey, assumed responsibilities as president andCOO of <strong>Outrigger</strong> Hotels Hawaii. Dr. Richard Kelley’srole then shifted to CEO and Chairman of the Board.<strong>Outrigger</strong> also took on its first venture outside of Waikikiin 1989 when it added The Royal Waikoloan Hotel,located on Hawaii, the Big Island, to its inventory.The ‘80s closed on another high note for the companywhen Roy and Estelle Kelley were inducted into theAmerican Society of Travel Agents’ Hall of Fame.One of the highest honors in the travel industry,the induction recognized their central and significantrole in the development of tourism in Hawaii.Roy and Estelle KelleyThe 1990s - A Decade of Change<strong>Outrigger</strong>’s dreams of expansion to Hawaii’s neighborislands became a reality in the ‘90s, when growthburgeoned in several ways. First, the company assumedmanagement of the former Hilton Kauai Resort and aptlyrenamed it the <strong>Outrigger</strong> Kauai Beach Resort. Then,<strong>Outrigger</strong> purchased The Royal Waikoloan on HawaiiIsland, which it had been managing for several years,renaming it the <strong>Outrigger</strong> Waikoloa Resort and investingheavily in renovating the hotel. Additionally, the companyacquired the Aston Wailea Resort on Maui, renaming itthe <strong>Outrigger</strong> Wailea Resort and undertaking significantrenovations to the property.Continuing its journey to Hawaii’s neighbor islands,<strong>Outrigger</strong> formed a condominium management team in1994 and assumed management of properties on Kauaiand Maui. Over the years, the condominium inventoryhas changed with many of the earliest and less desirableproperties no longer a part of the <strong>Outrigger</strong> portfolio.Today, <strong>Outrigger</strong>’s Condominium Collection is a uniqueand celebrated product line within the <strong>Outrigger</strong> Hotels &Resorts brand.<strong>Outrigger</strong> at Lae nani- 6 -
