THE GREMLIN9 th Minnesota Cadet Training Group Issue # 6: Thursday, June 28, 2007The importance of exerciseWith physical training beginning each day, soremuscles and a few blisters are common for cadets andsenior officersalike duringencampment.Around theworld, scores ofpeople participatein some sort ofexercise, sports,or physicalactivity. They areovercoming excuses and realizing numerous benefitsthat one can achieve from undertaking physical activityon a regular basis. Exercise is important to keep bothyour body and mind “in shape”. There’s also the benefitof increased energy, increased metabolism, improvedmuscletone, betterhealth, stressreduction, andimprovedselfesteem.Thephysicaltrainingat encampment is a combination of aerobic, strengthand stretching exercises. At all times the cadets andsenior officers are closely monitored by encampmentmedical staff, which is always present to assist. The importance of inspections“If I could only get them to make their beds andclean up their rooms!” It’s a cry by many parents. You’ll be pleased to learn that your cadet has madetheir bed, and a whole lot more, every day while atencampment. Well, the cadet Standards and EvaluationTeam insisted. Most evenings your cadet has been making sure thateverything, from clothes to shoes are clean, polishedand in the proper place. They know an inspecting cadetwill be by shortly to ensure that they are.The attention to detail, ironing and admin thatprecedes an inspection can be time consuming andstressful, so you learn time management skills quickly.Cadet Gabert (130 th Squadron-Lakeville) "gets the word" fromC/Capt Titus (L) and C/2nd Lt Crevier (R).The level of preparation required for inspections hasmany positive results. Preparing a footlocker anduniform can stimulate genuine teamwork. The cadetwill discover that some of their roommates are naturallyexcellent at making a proper “hospital corner” on theirbunk or ironing a uniform. Then, the cadet will askthem to show them and in turn will do some otherservice for that person. Eventually their skill level willincrease to accomplish the task themselves, but untilthat time a service-exchange economy develops: THISIS TEAMWORK. This level of teamwork is anessential skill at encampment, and in life. And if they return home and don’t make their bed orclean up their room just mention the names C/Lt ColCox and C/2 nd Lt Crevier, the encampment Standardsand Evaluation officer and assistant are interested inmaking a home visit to provide the “proper motivation”to get that bed made and that room squared away.
