Guidelines and procedures for enrollment management from 2013Faculty of AgriSciencesMarch 20131 PurposeWith the enrollment plan for 2014 the Faculty of AgriSciences intends to: Sustain the current undergraduate student numbers at 340; Increase the student diversity (African, Colored and Indian or ACI) to 25%;and, Increase student success by allowing students who just meet the minimumrequirements to the Extended Degree Program (EDP).12 ProgramsAll programs are subject to enrollment management. For further information, refer tothe Faculty Calendar, Part 7.The Faculty of AgriSciences aims to manage the student numbers within the Facultyas per the Faculty plan. The student intake for new first year students in 2014 is setfor 340 students (main stream and EDP students). As such, any student that meetsthe minimum requirements for entry into programs offered by the Faculty ofAgriSciences will be selected or placed on a waiting list so as not to exceed 340registered students for AgriSciences programs (270 students for BScAgric, BScFor,BScConsEcol, BScFoodSc and BAgricAdmin and 70 students for BAgric(Elsenburg)). The Faculty will further accept 50 students for the EDP and preferencewill be given to ACI students to fill the 50 places available to the Faculty within theEDP.The student enrollments for the degrees BSc Conservation Ecology, BSc FoodScience and BScAgric (Viticulture and Oenology or Oenology Specialised) will bemaintained at the current levels. Strategically, the Faculty aims to increase theenrollment numbers for the degrees within the programme Plant and Soil Sciences.3 AdmissionIn the case of prospective students who are still at school, Grade 11 marks will beused for provisional admission. For prospective students who are no longer in school,Grade 12 marks will be used for provisional admission purposes. The NationalBenchmark Tests (NBT) will be used in discretionary cases to make an informed

Based on school and NBT results, a student may be advised orcompelled by the Faculty to follow the EDP or a special tutorial program. Studentswho obtained between 55% and 59.9% in their Grade 12 final examination may berequired to register for the EDP. Additionally, NBT results will be considered todetermine whether students who obtained between 50% and 59.9% (level 4) forMathematics in Grade 12 should register for the EDP programs in BScAgric, BScFor(field of study Forestry and Natural Resource Sciences), BScConsEcol, BScFoodScand BAgricAdmin or join special tutorial groups.4 ApplicationStudents are required to apply for placement in the programs offered by the Facultyby the 30 th of June of the preceding year. Late applications will be accepted until 30of September and selection will be dependent on the availability of places in theFaculty.The Faculty aims to register 340 first year students of which the objective is to have25% (85) ACI representation by 2014. Currently approximately 40% of provisionallyaccepted white students do not register for the selected programs and 60% of ACIstudents do not register after provisional acceptance. Therefore, the Faculty willconditionally accept 425 students based on academic merit and 213 ACI studentswho meet the minimum requirements for the main stream program and/or the EDP.In total 638 students will be provisionally accepted to enroll in the Faculty of

AgriSciences at Stellenbosch University with the aim that only 340 will register.Discretionary cases will be decided by the Dean and/or the Vice-Dean of the Faculty.45 Allocation of placesAny student applying to study at the Faculty with an average mark above 65% andwho meets the subject requirements will automatically be provisionally accepted intothe selected program. Any ACI student with an average of 55% or more and whomeets the minimum requirements of the preferred program will be provisionallyaccepted. White students with an average mark below 65 and above 55% will be puton a waiting list and will be considered after September. Provisional acceptance willthen be based on academic merit, and students with the highest marks will receivepreference. Places within the Faculty’s programs will be closed once 638 placeshave been filled.6 Selection processA selection process will be applied to ensure that enrollment targets are achieved.The adjustment of admission requirements will not be sufficient intervention to ensurethat student targets are met. Therefore, the Faculty selection policy will be used tomanage the Faculty's enrollment numbers and student composition and to ensurethat targets are met.Applications close on the 30 th of June of the preceding year. The first selectionprocess will take place between July and September and provisional acceptancewill be determined entirely by the student marks. Any student with an average markabove 65% will immediately be provisionally accepted. The top 425 students and allACI students who meet the requirements will be provisionally accepted until themaximum of 638 places are filled. If 638 applications are not received by the 30 th ofJune, the application process will remain open until the 638 provisionally acceptedstudents have been reached. If 638 students have not applied by the end ofSeptember, the Faculty will approach applicants that have selected AgriSciences asa second or third choice and have not been accepted by their first choice program.These students will be added to the list of students already selected. Students willbe ranked according to academic merit and will be provisionally accepted until 638student places have been allocated.

After completion of the selection process in September, successful applicants will beinformed in writing of the outcome of their application and this will continue until all638 students have been informed.56.1 Selection for admission to mainstream programsStudents that fulfill the minimum requirements for the main stream programs will beprovisionally selected according to their Grade 11 marks. During the first round ofselection, student numbers will be managed by provisionally accepting only 638students, of whom 213 will be ACI students. Other applicants will be put on a waitinglist and the outcome of the selection will only be known after registration. All ACIstudents who meet the requirements will be provisionally accepted.6.2 Selection for admission to the extended degree programAny student who is admitted to a mainstream program may apply for admission to therelevant EDP. Based on school and NBT results and/or the results of anyassessment or test prescribed by the University, a student may be advised orcompelled by the Faculty to follow the EDP route.Students who obtained between 50% and 59% in their Grade 12 final examinationmay be required to register for the EDP. NBT results will be considered to determinewhether students who obtained between 50% and 59.9% (level 4) for Mathematics ingrade 12 should register for the EDP programs in BScAgric, BScFor (field of studyForestry and Natural Resource Sciences), BScConsEcol, BScFoodSc andBAgricAdmin or join special tutorial groups. All ACI students who meet therequirements for the EDP will be provisionally accepted. White students who meetthe EDP requirements will be put on a waiting list. The Faculty will accept a maximumof 50 students for the EDP.7 Selection CommmitteeA selection committee comprising the Dean, the Vice-Dean, the Faculty Manager andand the Faculty Secretary will be established to finalise all student selection criteria.The selection process and all related inquiries will be managed by the FacultySecretary.
