The effect of concentrationConcentrations:The content of diamond or CBN inthe grinding rim is heavily dependentupon the application.Generally, where rapid stockremovalof tungsten carbide or hardened steelis intended, a concentration of 75 to125 is selected. When a good surfacefinish is demanded, lower concentrationsin combination with finerdiamond or CBN powder are required.Concentrations of up to 150 are usedfor profile grinding <strong>wheels</strong> and cylindrical<strong>wheels</strong> which have a small contactarea.Needless to say that <strong>Technodiamant</strong>guarantees the specified concentrations.Grit size:Diamond and CBN grit are availablein many sizes and types. The gritsize isdependent upon the desiredsurface finish. In addition, thegritsize also has an important effecton the grinding behaviour of thewheel.As far as the gritsize is concerned,<strong>Technodiamant</strong> complies with theFEPA standard. You will find acomparison table for the various gritsystems on page 6 in this catalogue.Binders:<strong>Technodiamant</strong> has a large number ofin house developed binders available.The type of binder is often selected incombination with the type of grit andconcentration. Binders are dividedinto metal, resin and ceramic binders.Solid metal binders are often appliedto grind glass and ceramics, whereasresin binders, porous metal bindersand ceramic binders are usually usedfor grinding tungsten carbides andhardened steel.The following more or less “universal”binder codes are often used by<strong>Technodiamant</strong>:XX Wet grinding of carbideX2 Dry grinding of carbideC2 Dry and wet grinding ofcarbide and hardenedsteel.T2 Dry and wet grinding ofhardened steel with cylindrical<strong>wheels</strong>.T3 Dry and wet grinding ofhardened steel with cup<strong>wheels</strong>.GS30 (GR) Wet grinding of flat glass.S149 Wet grinding of opticalglass.Ceramic binder:V-number Wet grinding oftungsten carbide, HSS, etc.<strong>Grinding</strong> <strong>wheels</strong> 4


Cutting depth for diamond and CBN grinding<strong>wheels</strong>The depth of cutting for oscillatinggrinding with forced feeding isassociated with the grit size of thewheel and the fineness required forthe surface. The depth of cut mustalways be less than the protrution ofthe grit from the binder. For a sharpgrinding wheel the protrution will be1/4 to 1/5 of the grit size at the most.However, the generation of heat mustbe held within certain limits as well.When dry grinding with a large contactarea between the wheel and thework piece, the depth of cutmust be much less than whengrinding with a small contact area.For creep feed grinding the grindingdepth setting is not the same as thedepth of cut, since the latter is limitedby the speed of the table. Specialmetal and resin wear resistant bindershave been developed for creep feedgrinding.
