Introduction to EARPA Partners Guide What is EARPA?

Dear reader,

The European road transport industry and research providers perform revolutionary as

well as incremental research and development (R&D) activities to find solutions for

the new technological and economic challenges in the next decades. Both the

important Green Car Initiative of the European Commission and a number of national

initiatives support this effort.

To meet future mobility demands, it is necessary to consider all energy sources and their pathway to the wheel on

the street, and determine which ones are highly efficient. Vehicle electrification, whether in the form of hybrid,

plug-in or pure electric systems, is the challenge for mid- and long-term research activities. There will not be a

single powertrain system in the future. We will face a variety of systems starting with highly intelligent versions of

today’s internal combustion engines and transmissions, through stages of electrification on to electric vehicles.

Nevertheless the improvement of road safety, noise emissions, as well as important scientific areas such as

materials, embedded systems, processes and intelligent transport systems are also of high priority next to

simulation tools needed for the future development of such complex systems. Also important are their contributions

to society's needs in terms of mobility for all segments of the population. To meet the mobility challenges ahead

of us, EARPA members are the supporting partners of the industry to create the required innovations. EARPA and

its members provide services directly to the automotive industry and their suppliers. Part of this work is performed

in pre-competitive European research projects.

This updated EARPA Partners Guide gives R&D actors an outline of the leading European research partners and their

special expertise in the field of road vehicles. The members of our network are highly experienced in carrying out

interdisciplinary work for the future of our automotive industry and aiming at an improved and more sustainable

road transport system. Our members are also active contributors to various European Technology Platforms and

other European Initiatives. Especially today, EARPA members would like to highlight their support to the new

activities of ERTRAC (the European Road Transport Research Advisory Council).

Josef Affenzeller, EARPA Chairman

Founded in 2002, EARPA is the association of

automotive R&D organisations. It brings

together the most prominent independent R&D

providers in the automotive sector throughout

Europe. Its membership is ranging from large

and small commercial organisations to national

institutes and universities.

EARPA, as the platform of automotive

researchers, aims at actively contributing to the

European Research Area and the future EU

Framework Programmes. In this task, EARPA

seeks a close cooperation with the automotive

industry, the automotive suppliers, the oil

industry as well as the European Institutions

and the EU Member States.

EARPA members are strongly committed to

cooperate closely with industrial automotive

partners, universities and other research

organisations on future R&D. Such a

cooperation may vary from an exchange of ideas

and knowledge in joint meetings to setting up

networks and carrying out joint projects. The EU

Framework Programmes are of particular interest

to EARPA members by means to achieve such

cooperation.

EARPA members are committed to contribute

to a common ‘Vision on Future Transport’ and

the creation and implementation of a ‘Strategic

Research Agenda’. In this, they support the

actions of ERTRAC – the European Reseach

Transport Advisory Council - as well as other

European Technology Platforms.

EARPA and its members, being well integrated in

both national and European research structures,

are in a position and willing to support a closer

link between and coordination of national and

European research programs. EARPA as an

independent platform is prepared to participate

at European level in strategic consulting related

to public interest and social matters regarding

mobility, environment, energy and safety in the

automotive domain.

EARPA is functioning thanks to its members'

annual contributions and is composed of four

main bodies. First, the General Assembly, in

which all members are participating, governs

the Association. Second, the Executive Board,

to which the management of the association is

delegated, initiates activities and carries out

the representative tasks. Mr. Affenzeller (AVL) is

as EARPA Chairman chairing this group. Third,

the EARPA Secretariat, which supports the

overall activities, is present in Brussels. The

9 Task Forces which form the heart of EARPA's

operations.

Within those Task Forces, EARPA members are

actively discussing research topics of their

interest. The Task Forces are focussing on

The Austrian Institute of Technology provides

The Aerosol & Particle Technology Laboratory

(APTL) research work is related to the science of

fine particles and their suspensions in various

media. APTL core R&D activities concern the

emission control area, where it has established

itself as a laboratory of international caliber, by

exploiting the benefits of nanomaterials and

nanotechnologies for the clean transport

systems of the future. In parallel, it invests in

scaling-up its activities on the synthesis of

nanoparticles with tailored properties focusing

on their integration into final market products

through process innovations. Last but not least,

APTL intensives its efforts in the exploitation of

solar technologies for clean fuels production.

AVL is the world's largest privately owned company

for development of powertrains (combustion

engines, hybrid systems, electric drive) as well as

simulation and test systems for passenger cars,

trucks and marine engines. AVL has 4500

employees (2.000 in Graz, and an additional 2.500

in world-wide 45 representations and affiliates.

Turnover 2008: 740 Mio Euro. Approx 11% of the

turnover are spent for company-financed research.

Development of Powertrain Systems: AVL develops

and improves all kinds of powertrain systems and

is a competent partner to the engine and

automotive industry. In addition, AVL develops

and markets the simulation methods which are

Engine Instrumentation and Test Systems: The

products of this business area comprise all the

instruments and systems required for engine

and vehicle testing.

Advanced Simulation Technologies: The

AVL represents EARPA in the European

Technology Platform ERTRAC - European Road

The CEA, a French leading Research Centre, is

active in three main fields : Energy/

Information and Health Technologies/ Defense

and National Security. The CEA is based on a

cross-disciplinary culture of both engineers and

researchers, on which synergies between

fundamental and technological research are

built.

The Technological Research Division (DRT) has

specific activities focused on Applied Research.

The Technological Research Division (budget:

350 million Euros; 252 patents in 2006)

develops partnerships with industry to promote

innovation and increase the competitiveness of

our partners through new applications of

CEIT is a non-profit institute whose main

mission is to provide a service to industry by

carrying out contract applied research and

technological development. In addition, CEIT

endeavours to serve society by training young

researchers who will move on to industry, where

they will in turn generate innovative changes

that will make their companies competitive in

the world arena.

CEIT aims at maintaining the highest research

standards and at constantly adding to its wealth

of knowledge and expertise. CEIT is committed

to finding better ways of satisfying client

needs, to giving effective solutions to market

challenges and to solving complex

multidisciplinary problems.

CEIT consists of three departments (Materials,

The Department of Applied Mechanics of

Chalmers University of Technology is one of the

leading environments within Vehicle and

Mechanical Engineering research and conduct

world-leading education and research, usually in

close collaboration with national and

international industries. Research topics

encompass both fundamental and applied

research questions with focus on utilization.

To reassure that our research will be managed in

the best possible way even after our own

academic careers, we are investing our

knowledge in new students. The Department

offers a wide range of courses in the

undergraduate programmes, in addition to two

international Masters programmes in Automotive

Engineering and Applied Mechanics.

The department has approximately 170

employees and is divided into six divisions:

• Vehicle Safety. Research is performed with the

aim to preventing injuries to the human body,

due to extreme mechanical loading.

• Vehicle Engineering & Autonomous Systems.

Focuses on engineering of systems in the

applications of vehicles and robots.

• Combustion. Conducts research concerning

combustion and emissions formation in

internal combustion engines and gas turbines.

• Material & Computational Mechanics. The

activities are focused to mechanical modeling

of structures/components/processes along

with the involved materials, thereby providing

mechanics-based solutions and tools to our

engineering problem challenges.

• Fluid Dynamics. Research is performed with

the aim to gain fundamental knowledge about

turbulent incompressible and compressible

flows.

• Dynamics. Research is directed towards

various dynamic, vibration, and wave

propagation problems, sometimes with

coupling to other physical phenomena such as

wear or piezoelectricity.

activities:

The Foundation CIDAUT (Research and

Development Center in Transport & Energy) was

created in 1993 and has as principal objective to

nurture the competitiveness and the industrial

development of the companies in the transport

and energy sectors, thus enabling them to

develop new products and processes. In order

to realize this objective, the Foundation

promotes scientific investigation, technological

development and innovation applicable to

industry in general and to the transport and

energy sectors in particular. CIDAUT is composed

of six buildings and a laboratory test track for

carrying out road barrier tests with a constructed

surface area of 14,500 m2 and an investment in

equipment close to 26 million euros.

The wide range of technical skills and human

resources available in CIDAUT permits the

tackling of complete research projects,

development and innovation that include

the whole chain of values of a product

from its conception and design to preindustrialization,

passing through material

research, simulation of its behavior,

processing, design of prototypes and, finally,

its validation. The main execution of these

types of projects centers in the following areas

of knowledge:

The CMT - Motores Térmicos (Thermal Engines),

founded in 1979, is a very dynamic and

internationally well-known Research Institute of

the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia that

collaborates closely with the international

automotive industry.

Its main research activities are centred on the

theoretical-experimental study of all the

thermo-fluid dynamic processes in reciprocating

internal combustion engines, with the aim of

responding to specific demands of the

automotive industry. Main concerns are

nowadays dictated by environmental issues such

as the reduction of specific fuel consumption

and pollutants, as well as by the need to

improve engine efficiency and reliability. The

Institute is organised following five major

research lines: Injection & Combustion, Air

management & Turbocharging, Noise Control,

Thermal management and Maintenance.

CMT-Motores Térmicos has successfully led

several European projects in the 3rd, 4th and

5th Framework programmes, and participated in

various others, including 10 European projects

of the 5th Framework programme. In the 6th

Framework Programme, the institute was

involved in 2 Integrated Projects (NICE,

GREEN), in one STREP project (IPSY), and in a

Network of Excellence (ECO-Engines). Also,

between 2002 and 2006, it was recognised as a

Marie Curie Training Site.

The Josef Bozek Research Centre of Engine and

Automotive Technology links research workers

of Faculties of Mechanical and Electrical

Engineering of CVUT. It provides research and

development of both spark ignition and diesel

engines in the field of thermodynamics,

management, engine dynamics and structural

strength applied to the design optimization.

development private association. Its founders

are the Faculdade de Engenharia da

Universidade do Porto - FEUP (Faculty of

Established in November 2008, the Integrated

Solutions in Sensorial Structure Engineering (ISIS)

Scientific Centre is dedicated to the topic of

sensorization, i. e. to equipping technical

structures with an analogue of a nervous system

by providing a network of sensors, communication

facilities linking these and specific hardware as

well as computational methods to derive meaning

from their combined signals.

ISIS is organised as a virtual Institute at the

University of Bremen and as such links the three

faculties of production engineering, physics/

electrical engineering and mathematics/

computer sciences. This interdisciplinary approach

allows addressing all aspects of sensorization,

including materials science, manufacturing

technology, simulation of smart and sensorial

The Katholieke Universiteit Leuven was founded

in 1425 and is one of the oldest universities in

Europe and the largest one in Belgium. It has

The PMA division of the department of

Mechanical Engineering performs research in

production engineering, machine design and

The Noise and Vibration Research

Group, which is part of PMA, is one of the

world-leading research groups in noise and

vibration engineering. This group has 5

professors, 9 post-doctoral senior researchers

and about 30 pre-doctoral junior researchers.

The activities of the group are focussed along

four major lines of research: numerical

modelling, identification of linear and nonlinear

dynamic systems, active noise and

vibration control and design of intelligent

lightweight systems.

Throughout the years, the Noise and Vibration

Research Group has been actively involved in

• Hydropulse : Hydropulse System (Schenck) is

programmable vehicle/system fatigue test and

road simulating equipment that all kind of forces

and vibrations could be applied.

• Shed Test Cell : Shed is the hydrocarbon

evaporative emission test cell. This cell aims to

perform the test procedures in EURO I-II-III and

Carb standards and to carry out the related R&D

studies.

The Norwegian Research Council has defined

SIMLab at the Department of Structural

Engineering, at Norwegian University of Science

and Technology (NTNU), in cooperation with the

Department of Materials Technology, NTNU and

SINTEF Materials and Chemistry, as a Centre for

Research-based Innovation (CRI) for the period

2007-2014. The objective of the CRI scheme is

to strengthen Norwegian research groups that

work in close collaboration with partners from

industry and public enterprises in order to

support long-term research that promotes

innovation and value creation.

The main objective of the Centre is to develop a

technology platform for safe and cost effective

structures in aluminium, high-strength steels

and polymers through advances in the research

areas materials, solution techniques and

structures. These research areas are coupled

with a Demonstrator activity in order to ensure

the transfer of technology into innovation. The

ability of lightweight structures to withstand

loads from collisions and explosions is a key

issue in the Centre.

The research profile of the Centre is characterized

by a combination of a fundamental approach to

mathematical modelling of aluminium (sheets,

extrusions and castings), steels and polymers,

material testing at various loading conditions

and implementation of material models suited for

large scale structural analyses. Our research

methodology is based on a strong coupling

between tests on materials and components/

structures in the laboratory, material modelling

and numerical simulation of structural response.

Extensive experimental facilities for dynamic

testing of materials, components and structural

subsystems are available in our laboratory.

The industrial partners in the Centre are Hydro

activities:

Research work at the Faculty of Engineering is

running in several fields, like electrical energy

supply and distribution, electric machines

and power electronics, electronics and microelectronics,

biocybernetics, measurement systems,

automation, robotics and telecommunications,

respectively. There is a strong commitment to

research work in the field of automotive

applications, also in close cooperation with

Slovenian companies.

Hydrogen

Activities in the field of renewable energy

utilization for hydrogen production and storage

were focused investigating of various methods

for additional hydrogen purification that is

required for metal-hydride (MH) tanks storage.

Vehicle hybridization

The core vehicle hybridization research activity

is the synthesis of an integrated startergenerator

with torque booster (ISGTB) and an

internal combustion engine (ICE) at various

engine displacement ranges. ICE characteristics

define the origin for the design of most

appropriate electrical machines and power

electronic converters.

Electric machine control and diagnostics

Sophisticated electrical machines require an

adequate control approach therefore activities

for development and implementation of

innovative predictive torque control of AC and

DC drives are running intensively.

Internal combustion engines

Together with our close research partners from

Slovenia, among which are some significant

European automotive suppliers, we expanded

our core research activities to internal

combustion engines, with particular focus on

diesel engines and their compliance to latest

environment standards.

Industry support

A strong connection to different research

institutions and production companies in

Slovenia and broader world were established

also through our research activities and

involvement in different national and

international research projects (e.g. under

European 6FP and 7FP, etc) as well as through

our active membership in different

organizations (EARPA, ERTRAC – via our

research partners, etc).

Beside educational mission our priority focus is

spreading the scientific knowledge directly to

innovative products and production processes.

The Transportation Research Group (TRG) is one

of four divisions of the School of Civil

Engineering and the Environment at the

University of Southampton.

Research is focused on the design and

deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems in

the aviation, rail and road sectors, with a

particular emphasis on Human:Machine

Interactions and socio-technical aspects of

driver behaviour. TRG actively collaborates with

other Schools in the University including

Engineering Sciences, Electronics and Computer

Science, Geography, the Institute of Sound and

Vibration Research, Management, Maths and

Social Sciences.

TRG facilities include the Instrumented Vehicle,

advanced immersive driving simulators and a

transport data laboratory. A particular area of

expertise is that of intelligent transport systems

(ITS) and how they may shape, and be shaped

by, socio-economic and socio-technical factors.

TRG hosts the UK-China ITS Centre. Although all

modes of transport are covered a particular

focus is on road operations.

TRG also holds several grants from the European

Commission, from Government and Industry.

• GUARD (EC 6th framework) and POINTER (EC

7th Framework) projects that are evaluating

measures to promote sustainable transport,

including the deployment of ITS, as part of

the Civitas initiative;

• COOPERS (EC 6th framework) and CITYMOBIL

(EC 6th framework) projects that are

examining future technologies such as cooperative

vehicle/highway systems and

personal rapid transit;

• PROMIT (EC 6th framework) and

SMARTFREIGHT (EC 7th framework) projects

that are examining deployment of ITS in

freight transport;

• ALICIA (EC 7th framework) that is examining

future glass cockpit design in aircraft;

• NEARCTIS (EC 7th framework) which is a

network of excellence examining the use of

information technologies in advanced traffic

management;

• NICHES+ (EC 7th framework) for the

promotion of sustainable transport solutions.

activities:

The Biomechanics Team at the University of

Strasbourg is one of the four teams composing

the Strasbourg Fluid and Solid Mechanics

Institute (IMFS). This Institute is

simultaneously affiliated to the University of

Strasbourg and to the Centre National de la

Recherche Scientifique (CNRS). Our team is

constituted by a pluri-disciplinary management

group of eight persons including specialists in

fluid and solid mechanics (5), ENT (1), legal

medicine (1) and nuclear medicine (1).

Currently about twelve students are working at

this group at different levels including

obviously PhD students. Main activity of this 20

persons research group is head-neck and

abdominal impact biomechanics including

fundamental and applied research.

Head-neck impact biomechanics, leaded us to

original results in collaboration with a number

of European teams. At the University of

Strasbourg we acquired all experimental and

computing facilities needed for dynamic

analysis of mechanical structures i.e. modal

analysis and impact test facilities (head impact

and rear impact), rheology tests equipment as

well as explicit and implicit FE codes.

three years old child neck in an automotive

environment;

• FP6 - APROSYS (2004-2009);

• SP5-improved model based head injury

criteria;

• SP3-Pedestrian head impact simulation and

proposal of a new test method;

The Vehicle Safety Institute (VSI) at Graz

University of Technology offers research,

development and education in the field of vehicle

safety. The main research areas are related to:

• accident research,

• integrated vehicle safety,

• biomechanics,

• regulations and standardisation,

• testing.

The use of a comprehensive accident data case

library and detailed accident reconstructions are

the basic concepts in accident research. The VSI

operates an own in-depth accident collection.

Virtual methods (finite elements & multi body) are

used as one of the essential tools for development of

new safety systems. Therefore the VSI is equipped

with a simulation department using well known codes

(Pam, LS-Dyna, Madymo, Radioss) on HPC clusters.

Integrated safety research focuses on driver

assistance system validation tools and adaptive

restraint systems.

The validations of simulation models as well as

material parameter studies are performed in the

crash laboratory.

The crash laboratory is equipped with a full-scalecrash

track and test rigs for component testing.

Several dummies and test bodies can be calibrated

according to EN 17025 in the own dummy lab. The

dummy-pool offer dummies, data acquisition

instruments and high speed cameras for sharing.

Road side furniture are tested as registered test lab

according to EN 1317 and EN 12767.

Students are introduced in the basics of vehicle

safety and biomechanics. Advanced courses are

offered to students becoming a safety engineer. For

post graduated a master course can be visited.

Besides the theoretical education also the practical

application in the laboratory and projects is trained.

The Vehicle Safety Institute works also as an

engineering partner in the development of testing

equipments and vehicle safety systems. Different OEMs

and T1 suppliers are research partners of the VSI.

The VIRTUAL VEHICLE is an international

institution in the field of application-oriented

vehicle development. More than any other

European research institute it unites a variety of

sub-disciplines from the field of vehicle

simulation technologies.

The development of new technologies, methods

and tools for individual CAE disciplines and CAE

integration takes center stage. A multidisciplinary

approach to product development

and coupled simulation are central research

topics. In addition, VIRTUAL VEHICLE features a

variety of test stands and highly sophisticated

new measurement methods in both its own test

center and in cooperation with the Technical

University Graz. This also enables the validation

of simulation processes and “hybrid

verification”, which involves the connection of

simulation and testing for system design.

VIRTUAL VEHICLE functions as a bridge between

university research and advanced industrial

development. The bundled competencies found

at VIRTUAL VEHICLE, together with the coverage

of individual CAE topics and CAE integration,

form a research platform that is unique in the

world of CAE.

five research areas:
