Advancement and PlanningAdvancementGeneral ConsiderationsExecutive Summary/General/#2/p5The <strong>School</strong> must make a major commitment <strong>to</strong> a formal development or advancement model <strong>to</strong>identify new partnerships, public and private, that will support the mission of the <strong>School</strong>.Efforts <strong>to</strong> increase funding of student scholarships are laudable and should continue <strong>to</strong> receiveemphasis. The DVM’s overall development <strong>program</strong> is relatively new and should be a point offocus. Innovative use of development funds <strong>to</strong> leverage state support, as occurred with theisolation unit, should be adopted as a pro<strong>to</strong>type for increased funding of important <strong>program</strong>s,such as the professional <strong>program</strong>’s instructional budget, by the SVM in the future.D. This thrust is aimed at the establishment of acomprehensive development <strong>program</strong> <strong>to</strong> serve the SVM in<strong>to</strong> the future byidentifying new partnerships, public and private, that will support the mission ofthe <strong>School</strong>. To focus the overall strategic direction of the school, a planningprocess with an external consultant has been commissioned.Strategic PlansExecutive Summary/General/#1/p5The <strong>program</strong>s suffer from the lack of an up <strong>to</strong> date strategic plan. All units need <strong>to</strong> have strategicplans, including strategic plans for research, teaching, and service.The SVM Planning Document, which has served as the guiding document since1999 has been updated on an approximately two <strong>to</strong> three-year basis, with thelast iteration ratified by the faculty in May, 2009.
