Commencement is the special occasion that provides public recognition <strong>of</strong> academic<br />

achievement <strong>of</strong> students. The diploma is an <strong>of</strong>ficial document certifying the comple­<br />

tion <strong>of</strong> curricula required for an academic degree.<br />

THE PROMINENCE OF THE MACE<br />

The mace, carried by the senior marshal to lead the ceremonial procession, is a sym­<br />

bol <strong>of</strong> authority. The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Baltimore</strong> mace is 42 inches tall, crafted <strong>of</strong> silver<br />

and wood, and bears the seal <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>.<br />

HONORS DESIGNATION<br />

Undergraduate students are awarded degrees summa cum laude, magna cum laude,<br />

or cum laude based on their cumulative grade point average.<br />

Summa Cum Laude-with the greatest praise<br />

Phrase used to signify graduation with highest honors, 3.90 grade point average.<br />

Magna Cum Laude-with great praise<br />

Phrase used to signify graduation with high honors, 3.75 grade point average.<br />

Cum Laude-with praise<br />

Phrase used to signify graduation with honors, 3 ..50 grade point average.<br />

CANDIDA TES FOR DEGREES<br />

At this Commencement, degrees are conferred upon persons who completed requirements in<br />

July and December 1996. Prior to the printing <strong>of</strong> this program, however, it was not possible<br />

to determine who had completed degree requirements. The listing <strong>of</strong> candidates and academic<br />
