854 Sprayer ControlIntroductionThe programming of the 854 is divided into three programming categories; OEMSetup Mode, System Setup Mode, and Application Preset Setup Mode.! The OEM Setup Mode contains configuration steps for the Console.Changing these settings is not recommended, unless instructed to do so, as itmay adversely affect the performance of the controller.! The System Setup Mode contains the programming steps that customize thecontroller to the sprayer or sprayer components. These include calibrationsteps and parameters that, once programmed, seldom change.! The Application Preset Setup Mode contains the settings that are mostfrequently changed: tip spacing, # of tips per boom section, density, nozzlesused, and target application rate.98-05051 4R1


Programming Guidelines854 Sprayer ControlMake sure that all hardware components are properly installed and tested.Before starting the programming process, confirm that the console and allsensors are working properly.IMPORTANT PRELIMINARY INFORMATIONBefore beginning, review the following Programming Guidelines that control theprogramming process:! To enter the program mode, see the appropriate program section in thismanual. The master switch must be in the off position to enter any programmode.! To exit any program mode press and hold thePRO key for 3 seconds. Theinputs are stored and the computer exits the program mode. This action canbe done at any time during the program process.! To increase the value of a programmable digit, press the + key. To decreasethe value, press the key. These keys are located directly to the right of thedisplay. For some programming steps, pressing and holding the + or keychanges the programmable value rapidly. Pressing the + or key oncechanges the value by one.! Pressing and holding the key in some programming steps sets the value to“0”.! Pressing the key once in some steps resets the value to the factory defaultvalue.! Pressing thePRO key advances to the next programming step. After the lastprogramming step, the console completes the program loop and returns tothe first programming step.Due to differences in fonts, some letters on the displays shown inthis manual are not identical with the corresponding letters on thedisplay of the controller. Initially the console displays thesoftware version at the top of thedisplay and the serial number of theconsole at the bottom of the display." OEM Program Mode – TeeJet 854 Controller854 Sprayer ControlThe OEM Program Mode contains configuration steps for the console. Theconsole is typically pre-configured before being shipped. Changing these steps isnot recommended, unless instructed to do so, as it may adversely affect theperformance of the controller.To enter the OEM Program Mode:" Begin with console powered off." Press the andPRO keys simultaneously to turn the console off if necessary." Press and hold the + and keys. While holding, press thePRO key 4 times." Release all keys.NUMBER OF BOOM SECTION SWITCHES ON THE CONSOLEIn this step, program the number of individual boom section switches actuallypresent on the control console (regardless of the number of boom sections thatare on the sprayer)." Use the + or keys to modify thevalue." 1 to 11 switches can be programmed." This number determines the “Numberof spray Tips per Boom Section” in theSystem Setup Mode." Press and hold the key for 3seconds to set the value to 1." Press the key once to reset thisvalue to the default value of 5." Select the minimumvoltage that the regulating valve needs tomake it turn at its slowest rotation speed.Voltage on REGULATING VALVE14(E.g. if the motor of the regulating valveturns with a minimum of 3.5 volt, then thisnumber should be used here).The effect of this parameter on theregulation behavior is shown in Fig. 1. Thisvalue must match the actual operation ofthe regulating valve used. Check with thevalve manufacturer for this value." Use the + or keys to change thevoltage." 854 Sprayer ControlRegulation Stop BandThe regulation stop band is the maximum error percentage allowed on theapplication rate before the regulating valve reacts. (E.g. if a stop band of 1.5% isselected, there is no action on the regulating valve if the actual application rate iswithin 1.5% of the target rate). This minimum percentage prevents the regulatingvalve from oscillating in a narrow band around the target point." Use the + or keys to change theregulation stop band (value isexpressed in error percentage). Themaximum value is 10.0%." Press and hold the key for 3seconds to set the value to 0.0." This timeis the number of seconds the regulating valve needs to turn from the completeclosed to the complete open position, at the nominal voltage (e.g. 14V)." Use the + or keys to change therotation time of the regulating valve inseconds (minimum 0s, maximum50s)." Press and hold the key for 3seconds to set the value to 0.0." Press the key once to set thevalue to the default setting of 6seconds." The controller continues to make thenecessary adjustments at all times. Enter the % of allowable change from thetarget rate in this step.E.g.: Target rate of 20 GPA with 5%programmed for Display Stabilization.Display shows 20 GPA any time theactual rate is +/- 5% or:19.0 - 21.0 GPA Actual = 20.0 GPA on display.S m oD I s" Use the + or keys to change thevalue." 854 Sprayer ControlCALIBRATE TIP LEVEL %If both a pressure sensor and flow meter are installed and being used, the 854uses one sensor to cross check the other for system errors.Select the primary sensor (used for regulation) in the Sensor Select step of theSystem Setup Mode. The opposite sensor automatically does the crosschecking.This step sets the % of allowable errorbetween the sensors before an alarm isactivated. All sprayer systems havesome discrepancy between pressureand flow due to pressure drops andpositioning of the sensors." Use the + or keys to change the% of allowable error." Make sure connections are made and thesensors are properly secured.Very Important: When working around a sprayer or chemicals, always wearprotective clothing and eyewear.Partially fill the sprayer tank with water to flush the system, and to make a visualcheck of the spray tips to make sure all tips are delivering a good spray pattern.Follow these steps, in sequence. The Master Boom Switch must be in the “OFF”position:♦ Make sure the tank shut-off valve is open.♦ Start the engine, engage pump, and set the rpm to that being used whenspraying.♦ Turn the computer on by pressing thePRO key.♦ Ensure that the preset reference flow arrow matches the set of tips you areusing. The sprayer data isprogrammed into the computer.♦ Turn the control console on by pressing thePRO key.♦ Toggle the individual boom switches to the “ON” position, for each of thebooms on your sprayer.♦ TheAuto/Man key should be switched to “AUTO”.♦ In the Auto mode, when the Master boom switch is “OFF”, the targetapplication rate, as well as the target symbol, is displayed in the consoledisplay. When the Master boom switch is “ON”, the actual rate is displayedand the target symbol no longer appears.♦ While spraying with the Master boom switch “ON”, the display alwaysindicates the actual application rate, vehicle speed, application areacovered/total volume applied, and pressure (only if a pressure transducer hasbeen installed).♦ When the point is reached where spraying is to begin, turn the Master boomswitch to the “ON” position. This activates the spraying operation. Maintainthe usual vehicle speed for spraying. Moderate changes in vehicle speed donot affect the application rate, because such changes are compensated for byautomatic pressure increases or decreases by the controller.If for any reason it is necessary to stop, turn the Master boom switch to “OFF”.Alarm warnings can occur momentarily while the pressure regulating valve issearching for a new setting (i.e. after the close of a boom section or other changein normal operation).
