At its height, the organization had more than 1400members, and was involved in putting together more than 30 events ayear. Over the past 10 years, the Motor City Striders membershipnumbers dwindled, along with their event menu. Although the club hasexperienced a decline over the last decade, the Motor City Striderscontinue their involvement in organizing events in the greater Detroitarea, and have a connection to some of the largest events in the state, including the Detroit Freepress Flagstar Bank Marathon.Kalamazoo Klassic Earns RRCA National Championship Berth for2010At the 2009 RRCA National Convention in San Francisco, it wasannounced the Kalamazoo Klassic was selected as the 2010 RRCA 10kNational Championship. RaceDirector Terry Hutchins’ leadership, perseverance and dedicatedefforts over the years, along with the more recent efforts of VPMembership Julie Wojtaszek, paid off as the Kal-Haven Trail Runcontinues to blossom and grow beyond our greatest expectations. In2004, we were forced to cancel the annual event due to lowparticipation. Five years later, the 2009 Kal-Haven Trail Run passedinto history with record growth in participation and fundraisingproceeds for the Girls on Track Program, not to mention plenty ofthrills and excitement along the 33.5 mile trek from Kalamazoo toSouth Haven. 189 runners brought the trail to life by participating inthis year’s event which included a solo run and 2-person and 6-personrelay events. Nearly $3,000 was raised for the Girls on the Run Girlson Track program, earning Kalamazoo Area Runners a Girl’s on theRun Sponsorship. In addition, the solo run served as the RRCA MIState Ultra Marathon Championship.Eight months later, runners flooded the building and grounds atPortage West Middle School for the 2009 Thanksgiving Day TurkeyTrot Time Prediction 5k Run. This year’s event established a newparticipation record with 449 finishers, shattering our prior record fromlast year of 369. The Turkey Trot has emerged as one of greaterKalamazoo's most rapidly growing events thanks to overwhelmingsupport from the running community.Significant change was inevitable with the Turkey Trot’s explosivegrowth and presence over the last few years. For 2009, KalamazooArea Runners introduced many exciting new changes including theformation of a planning committee to assist Race Director Scott Taylorin event organization, an event logo, online registration, the addedservices of a timing company, sponsor support and optional technicalshirts, all while maintaining the option to participate in the event freeof charge.
