Inaddition, fiber from flax seed and digestive enzymesare included to support overall gastrointestinal health.Measuring Antioxidant Activity – The OxygenRadical Absorbance CapacityThe oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC)assay is a method for quantifying the antioxidantstrength of substance (i.e. its ability to fight freeradicals). The method was developed in part at theUSDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Agingat Tufts University. The measurement is standardizedagainst a water-soluble vitamin E derivative (calledTrolox) which has a known ORAC value, and isreported in terms of Trolox equivalents (μmole TE).This method serves as an excellent way to quantifythe ability of various compounds to quench freeradicals. ORAC values have been measured formany fruits and vegetables as well as numerous plantextracts. For example, a single serving (1/2 cup) offruits and vegetables yields an ORAC value between600 – 800 μmoleTE. Based on the recommendationthat we should be consuming nine to thirteen servingsof fruits and vegetables a day, one can tell that theORAC value of a healthful diet would be quite high.ORAC value for Organic Greens and Reds isapproximately 3,000 μmoleTE per serving which isthe ORAC equivalent of 3-4 servings of fruits andvegetables.
