Daily Life in Pre-SchoolFrom the Director:One of the favorite parts of my job is the chanceto talk to students of all ages. On any given day,the adults here at ISS can find themselves deep inconversation with a three-year old, a thirteen-year oldor an eighteen-year old. At ISS, I truly believe thatoften we adults learn as much from our students atwhat they learn from us.This afternoon when some high school studentsstopped by my office with questions connected witha Theory of Knowledge class, I was reminded thatthe concept of age is a very fluid one. The youngmen spent some time giving me their opinions of myoffice, commenting on the artwork on the walls andwanting to hear the history of the rocking chair in thecorner. (It is one of a set of twin chairs with beautifulrosemaling that were painted by noted local artist,May Field, in honor of the retirement of long-timeteacher, Marlys Simpson. Ms. Simpson has the otherone in her home.) But, they were most intrigued bythe fact that there were several columns of big Legoblocks in my office. I could see that their fingerswere itching to sit down and play with them—evenat seventeen years of age—but their loyalty to theirassignment sent them back to their classroom. Theblocks are in my office, along with a load of books, because I often have students stop by for a chat, toplay, or as a place to wait if they have missed a bus orare waiting for their parents after school. It was a reminder to me that we should never be too oldto play. The “age appropriate” listing on the box a toycomes in should only be seen as a recommendation—never an upper limit. This leads me to share some insights about the valueof pre-school programs. I suspect most reading thismessage would agree with the ideas that will follow, but it is always good to analyze the familiar ratherthan taking it for granted. In a radio program we listened to recently entitled,“Preschool: The Best Job-Training Program,” therewere a number of ideas that not only made sense, but also had been backed up by scientific researchfrom a surprising angle. The study centered on thework of a Nobel-winning economist named JamesHeckman who was looking at the success—or lackof success—of job training programs for unskilledyoung male workers. He had two control groupsthat he was considering—those who went throughthe job training program and those who didn’t. Hewas confused, because he found that the trainingprograms didn’t seem to make a difference. But as his research uncovered, the missing link wasn’tthe value of the job training program, it was becauseit was already too late for the young men to learn newthings, because they were lacking what Heckmanlabeled,2 · The Informer 28 September 2011 www.isstavanger.no
studied half a century ago and our ISS preschoolchildren today. But those basic precepts of learningto communicate, to negotiate, to resolve conflicts, totake joy in learning to share and play together are thesame. There is magic being accomplished every day by theteachers of our youngest students. It’s a good reminderthat they are not just learning for the moment, buthoning their job training skills for the future!their honor like Erik did, (Asteroid 7939 Asphaug),but it is always great to watch the trajectory of ourformer students as they make their way out into theworld. All the best,Dr. Linda Duevel, DirectorLduevel@isstavanger.noTo learn more about this study and several others, here are some links:http://www.npr.org/blogs/money/2011/08/12/139583385/preschool-the-bestjob-training-program?sc=emafhttp://jenni.uchicago.edu/papers/Heckman_Moon_etal_2010_NBER_wp16180.pdfhttp://ftp.iza.org/dp4533.pdfhttp://www.sciencemag.org/content/early/2011/06/08/science.1203618.abstractAnd I will end this message with news of twoformer ISS students. News from the Exams CoordinatorInnovation and intelligence:A report from the Nordic-Baltic Conference of IB World Schools in Tallinn, EstoniaI was recently privileged to attend an IB conferencewhere school leaders and IB Coordinators fromschools around the Nordic and Baltic region met todiscuss the themes of ‘Innovation and Intelligence’,and I thought that you may be interested to hearsome of what was raised at the meeting. As Åke Sörman (Development and RecognitionManager, International Baccalaureate) pointed outin his opening address, social and technologicalchanges will inevitably have an effect on teachingand learning in schools. When thinking aboutthese changes, we often tend to focus on theenormous developments in the on-line world inwhich our children move with an ease at whichthe older generation can only marvel. However, inour schools we must also focus on the values whichwe would wish to foster, and consider how we candevelop students with the creativity and ingenuity tofunction as citizens in the world of the 21st century.Major Tiit Meren, MD, PhD is a civilian surgeon whois also a reserve officer, and has worked as a militarysurgeon in Afghanistan. An inspiring speaker, DrMeren outlined the developments that have takenplace in emergency battlefield surgery in the last fewyears, and stressed how innovative practices havesaved many lives. But he also described the teamworkin multi-national groups where individual egos haveto be subsumed into the aims of the job in hand, andthe importance of education, especially for girls andwomen in many conflict zones, in helping to changeattitudes and develop a more peaceful world.Three speakers focused specifically on thetechnologies which will affect education in thefuture. Üllar Jaaksoo (CEO, Now Innovations!E-school) challenged his audience with his questionabout what is ‘real’ and what is ‘virtual’ in the mindsof our students. He suggested that educationaltechnologies need to keep up with the developmentswhich take place in the students’ lives outside school, and that technology can aid both the managementof the learning environmentand provide a variety ofinnovative and exciting learningopportunities for our students.Henrik Roonemaa (DIGIMagazine, Editor-in Chief)reminded us that to our students, ‘the furthest placein the world is only a click away’. These students havegrown up with the Internet, and consider it normalto share through environments such as Facebook andYouTube. Our young people have a different worldview to their parents or teachers, and this providesmany opportunities (but also some potential threats). Finally Kalev Pihl (Estonian Certification Centre,CEO) outlined some of the risks of implementingtechnology in learning, reminding us of theimportance that parents and teachers have of helpingstudents to interpret and critically evaluate thematerials they find on the Internet, and how to keepthemselves safe in an on-line environment. He alsoencouraged us to share our experiences from theconference with their school community – whichstimulated me to write this article!Professor Anna Craft (University of Exeter, GraduateSchool of Education) shared her research on learningin a digital age, where there should be an emphasison developing creativity. She outlined that learningbeyond the classroom is often characterized by‘plurality’ and ‘playfulness’ and stressed that educatorsneed to engage in ‘participation’ and explore the‘possibilities’ of the digital age. The four ‘p’s shouldstructure our discussions about education in thefuture, or, indeed, how we should be developing ourstudents’ educational opportunities now. These speakers, along with a number of others, and the discussions with colleagues that followed, inspired me in my continuing work within ISS.On a day-to-day basis we continue to develop theuse of technology in managing the administrativetasks in the school, providing a variety of learningand assessment activities, and broadening theopportunities available to our students.
