Because the naturalabduction angle of the acetabulum is about60º, the positioned cup is usually precipitouswhich can cause superoposterior dislocationof the femoral head component. In order toprevent dislocation, the cup has to be positionedat a more horizontal angle and thecup will be exposed outside of the bonyacetabulum, particularly superoposteriorly.To avoid these problems, the articulatingsurface of the polyethylene cup is angled20º toward the horizontal plane. This providesmore coverage on the superoposterioraspect while keeping the center of hip rotationthe same as the geometric center of theouter shell. The resulting abduction faceangle of the polyethylene cup is a stable 40º(See Figure 1 on page 4).3
