Notre Dame student police
chief for a day
A Grade 5 student from Notre Dame
Catholic School in Owen Sound spent a
day recently at that city’s police station.
But for a very good reason. Lindsey
Marck was the winner of the Police
Chief for a Day contest.
Students had to write an essay to
qualify for the award which was open to
all elementary students in the city.
Notre Dame Principal Michael Bethune
points out that three of the top five
entries came from his school.
The numbers are now official. The 11
Bruce-Grey Catholic schools that
participated in the 2008 National School
Run Day collectively raised $15,081.22
for cancer research.
More than 3,700 Ontario schools
participated in the run which raised $6.6
million.
A letter of thanks from the Terry Fox
Foundation said: “Please accept our
thanks for the encouragement and
support you provide to all your schools
with respect to their Terry Fox efforts.
The world is a better place because of
your schools.
Smooth Transition to
Grade 9 is goal of program
Sacred Heart High School in
Walkerton and St. Mary’s High School
in Owen Sound are offering “Transition
to Grade 9” programs in August for all
Grade 8 students entering secondary
school in the fall.
The programs, which are very
similar, give students the opportunity to
get acquainted with, and learn more,
about their new high school. Timetables
will be distributed, lockers assigned, and
computer login procedures will be
demonstrated.
Students also will have the opportunity
to meet some of their teachers and
peer mentors, to tour the school, and to
learn about school procedures and cocurricular
activities.
Immaculate Conception
fundraising for Sri Lankan project
MMACULATE Conception School
in Formosa has been fundraising
Iover the past year to raise $13,500 to
help build a school and a well in Sri
Lanka. Last year the students raised
$13,000 for a school in Sierra Leone.
This year’s project got its start when
six students from the school attended
the Me to We Day rally in Toronto at
“It’s amazing to know that just
being a small ordinary school can
make a big difference in the world.
it is a great feeling knowing that I
was one of the leaders who helped
build a school in Sri Lanka. Also,
that because of our accomplishment
we will help so many kids
who have nothing, have an
education.” – Hayley Fischer,
student council leader
which Free the Children’s founders,
Craig and Marc Keilburger issued a
challenge to all participants to raise
enough funds to build 100 schools in
countries in need around the world.
The students came back to Immaculate
Conception and issued the chal-
lenge to their fellow students. The
challenge was accepted and the students
set a target of $13,500 for the Sri
Lankan project.
Fundraising commenced in earnest
in October and to-date has included
pumpkin bowling, cookie sales, a gift
basket draw, roast beef dinner and silent
auction and a dance-a-thon.
The community also got involved.
The school received a $700 donation
from the staff and customers of Dunkeld
Restaurant, and some 125 items were
donated to the silent auction by businesses
and members of the school
community. In addition, members of the
Formosa CWL, along with many more
volunteers helped with the dinner and
auction.
To-date, more than $10,500 has been
raised. As well, matching funds granted
through the New Horizons Foundation
will add another $5,000 to the total.
The students have learned a lot
through the process. They have learned
a great deal about Sri Lanka, but they
have also learned that if we work
together as a community we can make a
big difference in the lives of others.
The Sacred Heart program is slated for
August 25 and 26; the program at St.
Mary’s will be held August 26 and 27.
Invitations have been sent to all incoming
Grade 9 students.
