2007 Spring Gobbler HarvestHunters in West Virginia harvested9,976 turkeys during the 2007spring gobbler season, accordingto Curtis I. Taylor, Chief of theWildlife Resources Section of theWest Virginia Division of NaturalResources (DNR). Preliminaryharvest figures indicate this yearʼsspring turkey harvest was 15 percentlower than the 11,735 birdstaken in 2006.The top five counties this springwere Mason (403), Jackson (361),Wood (337), Preston (330) andSummers (289). Forty-seven of thestateʼs 55 counties had lower harveststhis year, with much of theharvest decrease occurring in thesouthern counties. The highest harvestswere reported in DNR District1 (2,142), followed by District6 (2,052), District 4 (1,906), District5 (1,630), District 3 (1,326)and District 2 (920). District 6 (19percent lower) and District 5 (18percent lower) had the largest percentagedecreases in harvest whencompared to 2006.The reduced gobbling activity andlower harvest rate this past springwere the result of a poor wild turkeybrood production year in 2005.A population with fewer 2-yearoldgobblers can greatly affectthe spring gobbler harvest. EvenATVʼsMotorcyclesRt. 33 EastBuckhannon, WV304-472-4824www.supersmittys.comthough the stateʼs turkey populationis generally higher due to lastyearʼs good brood production, thelow numbers of 2-year-old birds inthe population affected the harvestthis spring. Wildlife Biologists havedetermined the level of brood productionaccurately forecasts springturkey harvests two years later, asthese 2-year-old birds tend to gobblemore and are more susceptiblecontinue to the next pageA large 23 pound bird was shot byDean Enoch. Night BassingNight fishing for bass is most commonlypracticed in the deep, clearhighland reservoirs of the state, where daytime fishing during hotweather can be uncomfortable andunproductive. When bass go deepduring the day. They can often becaught only by trolling in theselakes. However, at night, bass oftenmove up shallower, where theyfeed on nocturnal forage such ascrawfish. Night fishing is fun butrequires extra safety precautions.Be aware of obstacles and alwayswear your life jacket after dark. When to GoWhen the bass quit hitting duringthe daytime and when it becomesuncomfortably hot on the lake aregood signals that itʼs time to startKirsten Long got her 1st turkeyduring the youth hunt. pile, channel drop-off, weed bed, etc. As the summer wears on, thebass tend to move deeper and wonʼtcome up shallow, even at night, inmany lakes. Night fishing is productivewhen the bass are withinthe 20-foot zone. Deeper than that, many fishermen find it hard tomaintain contact with the lure andto hook fish when they strike. Otherplaces to try include:- Points with a deep-water access.- Shallow shorelines in naturallakes, especially close to weedbeds.- Underwater roadbeds or otherman-made structure in reservoirs.- Gravel or rock banks where crawfishare abundant.- Lighted boat docks.Lures and TackleIn general, many fishermen useheavier tackle at night than wouldbe effective during the daytimein clear-water lakes. Itʼs easier to“feel” a heavier lure at night thana light one, and itʼs easier to hookand land a big fish at night usingstouter equipment. Here are somelures to try:- Hair jigs and pork rind - 3/8 ounce(smallmouths)- Rubber jigs and pork rind - 3/8ounce or heavier (largemouths)- Spinnerbaits - use pork rind if desired.- Plastic worms.Jack Rowe caught a 20 1/2” smallmouth.Photo courtesy of RichmondʼsStore in Sandstone.Remington • Winchester • Weatherby • Browning • Rossi • EAA • Marlin • SavageRuger • Glock • Benelli • Bersa • Taurus • Springfield• S & WSEARSEXXONOver 47 YearsIn Business- Topwater lures, especially poppersand wobblers. For subsurface lures, contrastingdark colors (purple spinnerbait/redpork frog, etc.) prove effective afterdark. Playing A FishOnce youʼve coaxed that bass intostriking your lure, itʼs time to get itinto the boat. Hereʼs how to do it.Setting the HookTreble-hook lures often cause thebass to hook itself upon striking- often, but not always. The jawsof a bass are tough. It takes a solidimpact and a sharp hook point topenetrate. On crankbaits, when the strike occurs, snap back the rod tip quicklyand reel until the line is tight. Theimpact of the strike often sets thehooks, but by maintaining pressureon the fish you can usually burythem deeper. With topwaters, itʼs importantto wait a second before setting thehook. An overreaction often resultsin your pulling the lure from themouth of the bass.Single-hook lures (jigs, plasticworms, spinnerbaits) require astrong, deliberate hookset on yourpart. Often the bass inhales thelure completely. You must drivethe hook point home with a solidstrike.DONʼTTighten down on the fish and thensweep back with the rod tip. Thiswill only turn the head of a bigbass.DOSet the hook using the slack-linetechnique. fishing buddy, Rick Greathouse,to take a fishing adventure.Starting around 7:30 am, Rickand I pulled away from the dockto have a friendly fishing competition.I decided to go with ababy bass crankbait, a buzz bait- surface lure, and a Berkley 7”sour grape power worm. the way, this is a catch-and-releaselake. Anyhow, we had also beensupplied with another trick methodto catch even more fish.Earlier, the lake manager hadprovided us with a big bucket offish food. It was in our fifteenfoot jon boat when we arrived. Ihad been to this outstanding lakearound twelve years ago and knewwhat to do. Although we werecatching bass frequently already, Iconvinced Rick to take a break foranother fishing treat. We used thetrolling motor to move back to anotherarea of the lake.Stopping along the dam wall, wetied on small salmon hooks and aclear bobber. We applied a smallfish pellet to the hook. Now therapid action began! I reached intothe bucket and scooped up somefish pellets. Slinging them awayfrom the boat, the hoard of fish beganto churn up the water. We boththrew out our baits to the area ofthe fishing frenzy. Many types of fish surfaced tofeed on the pellets. There weregiant hybrid bluegills, small andlarge mouth bass, brown trout andlarge hybrid bass all involved ingorging on fish pellets. As the recent $200,000 winnerof the 2007 Wal-Mart Open atBeaver Lake, Morgan currentlyboasts more than $800,000 in FLWOutdoors career earnings. In addition,Morgan has recorded a staggering36 top-10 finishes at FLWOutdoors events, including 10 top-10 finishes on the FLW Tour since1996.Over the years, Morgan hasamassed three BFL victories, twoStren Series first-place finishes aswell as his first-ever FLW Tour win– which took place on Beaver Lakethis May. In 2007, Morgan is offto a very strong start, finishing noworse than 48th place at any eventall season. In addition, Morganis currently second overall in theLand OʼLakes Angler of the Yearpoints race for the FLW Tour. TodayAndy Morgan is here to takequestions from you, the fans. Letʼsget started.Q: Andy, what was it like to finallyget your first-ever FLW Tour win?-- Jon Pageler (Napa, Calif.)A: Man, Iʼll tell you what, it wasa load off my back. Itʼs somethingIʼve been after for many, manyyears. It just makes me a lot moreexcited to get back out there and gofishing again.Q: Congratulations on your win.I never thought I would see youwith a spinning rod in your hand.Do you use the shaky head in localtournaments, or do you still powerfishon your local lakes you knowwell? Also, I know that you plantspecial cover in your local lakes. What type of area (depth, bottomcontour, composition, etc.) worksbest for planting cover in your localarea? Thanks.-- A. Outlaw (Camden, S.C.): Very seldom do we use a shaky Gun & PawnStony Run RoadBuckhannon, WV304-472-1588We Accept Major Credit CardsBuy • Sell • Tradehead around home. I still like topower-fish back home. The betterI know a body of water, the moreconfidence I have in my powerfishingabilitiies. And you win moretournaments around here with thattechnique. At different times of theyear, you target different bottomcontours if youʼre planting cover,so itʼs hard to give you specificsregarding that question. Generally,we put cover back where cover was.So if some cover washes away dueto natural conditions, Iʼll occasionallytry to replace it. But we donʼtplant cover as much as other peoplethink. I donʼt spend a lot of time onone particular lake - even my homelakes - so I just donʼt have a lot ofspare time to do stuff like that. Andin grass lakes, you almost neverhave to plant any additional cover.Q: Heading into the Wal-Mart Openyou had 35 top-10 appearanceswith no FLW Tour wins. It takesa flawless tournament and a lot ofluck to win these. So you start toget concerned: “Hey, when is mynumber going to roll around?” Iʼvebeen close, but all it takes is onemistake. The funny thing is the oneI won I never expected to win. Goinginto that last day, trailing Jay(Yelas), I thought there was no wayI was going to win. If Jay catches threekeeper largemouths, I was done.Q: What made Beaver Lake sotough to fish during the Wal-MartOpen, as it seemed like most of thepros really struggled to find a successfulpattern?-- Titus Song (Minneapolis,Minn.)A: I think it was just the postspawnaspect. Once the spawn is done onBeaver, most of the fish just go tothe middle of the lake and suspend, and theyʼre really hard to catch. Ithink at Beaver, more fish suspendthan most other lakes. Itʼs kind ofweird. Those fish just go roamingaround: You had a real good tournamenton Lake of the Ozarks last fall. Were you throwing finesse gearthere too, or were you using football-headjigs?-- Matt P. (Osage Beach, Mo.)A: I caught some fish finesse-fishingon a shaky head and a dropshot, and the rest of the time Icaught fish on a buzzbait and a WarEagle jig. But the two days I wentpower-fishing, the conditions werenasty, which are the exact conditionsto power-fish.Family Fishing & CampingCatfish - Bass - Trout - BluegillCamping Daily or Year Round~ We Now Have Hybrid Striped Bass ~Rt. 50 Between Bridgeport & Grafton304-265-1000 Rt. 2 Box 290 Grafton, WV 26354June 2007 ~ Page 34Game HeadsRugsTurkeysLife Size MountsNoveltiesEuropean MountsJANE LEW,WVeMail toms_ taxidermy@msn.comQ: Is reaching the $1 million marka goal for you?-- Robby S. (Buckhead, Ga.)A: Actually, I havenʼt even lookedat the stats. I take it a tournament ata time, a day at time. You need toworry about whatʼs in front of you,not whatʼs behind you. If you donʼttake things one bite at a time, onestep at a time and one day at a time, you really start to lose your focus. You better be able to go out thereand tackle whatʼs in front of youthat day.Q: Andy, what are your favoritebaits and fishing techniques?-- Jon Stebbins (San Diego, Calif.)A: Iʼd say definitely fishing a jigFLINTLOCK'SSporting GoodsGuns • Ammo • Knives • Kids CamoBerkley Power Bait • Casto FliesSuper Dupers • Trout MagnetsOVER 400 GUNS IN STOCK• Muzzleloaders • Parker Bows• Archery Supplies• Used BowsKingwood PlazaKingwood, WV304-329-2377WV Giftscontinue to the next pageLive Plants

I trynot to have too many preconceivedideas when I go fishing. Itʼs reallyimportant to see what itʼs all about. You learn a lot when you spend 12hours on the water about what you6am to 10pm M-Thur6am to 11pm Sat9am to 10pm Sunmight need to change the next day.So time spent on the water is priceless.I just put the boat in the waterand basically go down the bank, fishing, gathering information.Q: Congratulations on the big win!How hard was it to stick with the“sissy stick”? Iʼm sure in the backof your mind you were thinking, “Ibet I could get the flipping stick outand go get a good kicker fish out ofa treetop somewhere.”-- Tim Kennedy (Hixson, Tenn.)A: I never practiced with a flippingstick throughout my entire time atBeaver. So I didnʼt feel comfortableswitching the last day. I toldmyself I was going to stay in myone area and try not to be a hero. But I do have to admit that I had aflipping stick in the boat. Those arethe demons you fight right there. You have to stay focued and keepto the task at hand. You canʼt panic.Through experience, when youstart to panic and change up on thefly, Iʼve found it really doesnʼt usuallywork out.Q: Which anglers did you grow upadmiring, and who, if anyone, haveyou modeled your career after?-- Rich Price (Oakland, Calif.)BRUSHY FORK MARTBrushy Fork RoadBuckhannon, WV(1.3 Miles From US Rt. 33)Gasoline LiveGas DieselBaitKeroseneWV Lottery & PowerballFishing SuppliesKnives - Novelty ItemsM-S 6am-12pm Sun 8am-10pm304-472-5132A: I always look at Larry Nixon and,of course, Kevin VanDam.
