“My grandmother believed in the essential good in people and measured them by who they were and what they did with their lives rather than their social status or wealth. She was fiercely independent and offered a helping hand to both friends and strangers. My mother talks about growing up during the Depression and coming home time after time to discover my grandmother had taken in a stranger to give them a hot meal and a place to sleep. She owned a tiny bungalow in Brighton Beach (Brooklyn, NY), smaller than most people’s vacation cottages, but to her it was a palace because it was filled with the sounds of her friends and family. Having scholarships in her name does more than simply honor her memory. It allows her values to continue year after year. A Message from the Dean The value of a scholarship provides opportunity where it did not exist before. That opportunity manifests itself in academics, in service to the community and in the contributions the young men and women listed here will make in the future. A scholarship provides a way for a donor to honor family members, friends, faculty at Washington University, or to leave a personal legacy.
