Mai 2013Unicycle European Championship6th NewsletterMarch 2013info@eurocycle2013.chwww.eurocycle2013.chRACESAs indicated at the last Newsletter I will describe the rule for the IUF slalom and the different jumps. We’ve been positively surprised by the high number of registrations, challenging our organizationskills. But we’ve been lucky to get the support of well know specialists for these technical disciplines:Reiner Fürst – responsible for the jumps and Andreas Rodler responsible for the IUF Slalom. Bothhave been already responsible for these disciplines at the Unicon 16. The main part of the followingdescription is written by them and we like to thank them for this.Age CategoriesThe classifying of the athlete into the age category is based on the age of the athlete at the 9thMay 2013.Age categories for the disciplines IUF-Slalom, high and long jump (female and male separate):• 0-10 20“ wheel (only for IUF Slalom)• 0-12• 13-14• 15-18• 19-29• 30+IUF-SlalomThe IUF-Slalom is open for all competitors and is taking placeat Friday 10th of May at the stadium Hard.Procedure of the start:• As soon as the athlete is ready the referee is startingthe procedure.• A voice from the PC-loudspeaker will announce„Attention“ followed by a beep.• After the beep the athlete has got three seconds to start. The time measurement starts as soon as the lightbarrier was initiated.• If the athlete didn‘t start within the 3 seconds timewindow the time measurement starts automatically andthe time is adding up.• If the athlete is initiating the light barrier before or duringthe beep or the referee is realizing a „flying start“ therewill be a loud jingle and the athlete has to start again.

Mai 2013Unicycle European Championship6th NewsletterMarch 2013info@eurocycle2013.chwww.eurocycle2013.chRecord attempt High Jump and Long jumpAfter the official competition the winner is getting three more trials.Further rules for a tieIf a competitor is participating at the final and has to do a tie at the age category – this tie will bepart of the final meaning the athlete has to jump only once.If an athlete isn’t a finalist as well the tie of the age category will be taking place before the finals.FinalsThe first (or best) six athlete will be qualified for the finals – males and females separately. Everyfinalist has got another six trials at the finals.General informationAll competition will take place as scheduled – at all weather conditions. The tied time table doesn’tallow any delays. And the stadium isn’t roofed.Safety EquipmentThe wearing of a helmet, knee and shine bone pads as well as gloves is mandatory.Specifics for the Long JumpFor the long jump the jump-off and landing bars will be additionally electronic monitored. Due totechnical reasons the bars have to be 1cm high (please note separate description). The starting line is three meter in front of the jump-off bar and the finish line is 6m behind the landingbar.Description for monitoring of the electronic long jump markersIn recent times an exactly evaluation of a long jump attempt will be very difficult. This is caused byextreme length and resulting high speed. A further problem is, if the rider fall it’s very dangerousfor the judge by monitoring the attempt. To have a consistent and reliable possibility for the judgefollowing new electronic detection system was developed and already successfully tested:On the jump and landing markers is a sensor with 2 channels mounted. The measuring principle of the sensor is used in the automobile industry and is working in almostevery car very well.As soon as a slight touch at the marker happens, the sensitive sensor responses with a significantsignal on both channels. To prevent an incorrectly detected contact for example caused through a vibrating ground by normallanding it’s necessary to have a sensor with 2 channels and different orientation. Thereforesuch a misuse event can be distinguished to a normal contact of the marker. The sensor signals will be displayed in each jump and the judge can immediately decide if the jumpwas correct or not.

Mai 2013Unicycle European Championship6th NewsletterMarch 2013info@eurocycle2013.chwww.eurocycle2013.chComment:The markers have a thickness of 3mm, expectations from other competitions shows that such athickness is necessary to have stability for example against a falling saddle. For correct working ofthe sensor principle with 2 channels in different orientations, it’s necessary, that the marker musthave a slant with a minimum angel. Therefore in sum the markers have a height of 9 – 10 mm.Picture of jump and landing marker with mounted sensors:Sensor signal with slight touch:sensor signal with stronger touch:Looking forward to see you soon at the EurocycleUrs HürzelerHead Races
