06 EXTERIOR DESIGNDOES EVERYTHING,INCLUDING TURNING HEADSWe build cars the way people buy cars. We look, wecheck, we compare. What we found was anythingbigger than five seats looked like an adapted van. What it gained in space it lost in style. We wanted oursix seater to be different. Versatile, yes, but not clunky. So we set about changing design concepts and askedour designers to build a car that could performmultiple functions and transport six people in comfort, and do it with style. As you can see, we delivered. The lines are smooth and elegant. Accentuatedby the matching chrome door handles and grilleand innovative rear light clusters. The chromeroof rails* add to the overall sporty look whilstoffering the ability to carry extra payloads.Every tiny detail has been thought about.Model shown is 2.2 i-CTDi EX*Available on EX grade only

10 PERFORMANCECAN PRACTICALITY COME WITH PLEASURE?What we learn on the racetrack we incorporate into our cars. Which iswhy we built the FR-V with a lowered centre of gravity and refinedsuspension. The result is a responsive car with great handling andstability. That in turn means less roll and less car sickness, whilst stillgiving you a dynamic driving experience. To give you choice, both the petrol and diesel engines come with a6 speed manual gearbox and the i-VTEC petrol engine is available witha 5 speed automatic transmission.Coupled with an unusually short wheel base for a six seater and powersteering, the FR-V is as effortless to park as it is to drive.Model shown is 2.2 i-CTDi EX

12 PERFORMANCESHHHHHHHH. WHISPERThe story of the i-CTDi engine started with one of the chiefe ngineers at Honda. He hated diesels. The noise, the smell, the dirt. He only agreed to build a new engine if he coulddo it his way. So he started from scratch. The result is thelightweight 2.2 litre i-CTDi engine. The same engine canbe found in the CR-V. To improve the engine’s core stiffnesswe use a revolutionary casting method. This produces oneof the quietest, most refined diesels around. W ith itsincreased torque, high responsiveness and astonishingacceleration, you probably won’t even notice it’s a diesel.

14 INTERIOR DESIGNIN CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE?The dashboard is designed to give you all the information you need at a glance, with allcontrols positioned within easy reach. The handbrake is tucked under the dashboard tocreate more space and to keep it out the way of inquisitive little hands. Add the highdriving position and you’ll have the comfort and control to get you where you're going andalso be able to sit back and enjoy the ride.Interior shown is 2.2 i-CTDi EX

18 INTERIOR DESIGNARE WE THERE YET?At Honda our ideas always begin withpeople. So the FR-V is designed to makeany journey a warm and enjoyableexperience for everyone. The first thingyou’ll notice is that the seats are dividedinto two rows of three. Your child can sitright next to you on the middle front seat, making long or short drives calmer andmore pleasurable for all. But being able tosee and talk to your passengers extends tothe back as well, as each headrest in thefront row is open.Sculpted seats in high quality fabric orleather also mean you’re surrounded bycomfort on every journey. Are we there yet?Absolutely.Interior shown is 2.2 i-CTDi EX

20 INTERIOR DESIGNBoots shown are 2.2 i-DTEC EXSO WHAT DO YOUWANT TO DO TODAY?Life can be unpredictable. How manytimes has a trip to the DIY centre to getsome screws ended in a boot full ofgarden furniture? Or picking the kids upfrom school suddenly turned into a taxiservice to the cinema? If the answer towhat do you expect from a car is “prettymuch everything,” then the answer isthe FR-V. The seats can be configured in32 different ways, including the centreseats sliding forwards and backwardsand each of the rear three seatsindependently folding flat. You can evenhave a picnic when it rains – by justfolding the front middle seat forwardand making it into a table. There arenine cup holders, large seatbackpockets and an extended glovecompartment, so you can take your lifewith you wherever you go.Interiors shown are 2.2 i-CTDi ES

22 INTERIOR DESIGNROOM FOR ONE MORE?Sometimes you just need a bit of additional space. In the case of the FR-V,even with all the seats in use, the boot still offers 439 litres of space. Withthe rear seats folded flat there’s more than enough space for the mostenthusiastic shopper, or a bike, a couple of dogs or even a suitcase orthree. How many other six seater vehicles can say as much?Model shown is 2.2 i-CTDi EX

24 SAFETYBUILT-IN SAFETYSafety is our highest priority and an integralpart of every car we build. Which is why wecreated the world’s most advanced crashtest facility at Tochigi, in Japan, where theFR-V was pushed to the limits. Our aim is to protect both passengers andpedestrians. So the FR-V has impactabsorbing bumpers and collapsible hingesthat minimise the impact on pedestrians inthe event of an accident. While the internalstructure has been built for strength, theshell has been designed so that passengerssit far away from any crumple zones.Independent crash tests conducted byEuro NCAP have given the FR-V anexcellent 4 star adult occupant ratingtogether with a 3 star rating for pedestrianimpact and child protection.

26 SAFETYACTIVE AND PASSIVE SAFETYIn the FR-V you and your passengers areprotected from all sides, with dual front, side andcurtain airbags. ISOFix mounting points for childseats are fitted to the front centre seat and tworear outer seats, while all six seats have 3-pointseatbelts and e-pretensioners on the front seats. The wide wheelbase, low centre of gravity andsmooth suspension give the FR-V excellentstability. Active safety measures include VehicleStability Assist (VSA), Anti-lock Braking System(ABS), Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) andElectronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) whichadjusts the brake power according to thedriving situation.

46 GLOSSARYAERODYNAMICSAerodynamics refers to the ability of a car toovercome the resistance or ‘drag’ generated byits body as it moves through the atmosphere. The lower the Coefficient of Drag (Cd), the moreaerodynamic the shape. An aerodynamic shapeis more fuel efficient, quieter and keeps the carfirmly on the road. The Cd value multiplied bythe cross section area of the car is the wind dragof the car.ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS)The Anti-lock Braking System prevents thewheels from locking when the brakes are appliedin an emergency, reducing the possibility ofa skid on wet, icy or loose surfaces enabling thedriver to retain steering control.CO 2Carbon dioxide is an exhaust gas believed to beone of the causes of the greenhouse effect. The lower the CO 2 emissions, the better for theenvironment.COMMON RAILCommon rail diesel engines have a reservoir ofhighly pressurised fuel close to the cylinderheads. As well as allowing extremely preciseamounts of fuel to be injected into thecombustion chamber very quickly, the pressuremeans the fuel forms a finer mist, so burns moreefficiently. This makes the engine moreeconomical and reduces noise, smoke andemission levels.DRIVE-BY-WIRE OR ELECTRONICTHROTTLE CONTROL SYSTEMThe mechanical link from the accelerator pedal tothe engine is replaced with sensors that detectthe throttle position and feed instructions directlyto the engine management system. This providesinstant, directly proportional yet smoothresponses to throttle inputs.ELECTRONIC BRAKE-FORCEDISTRIBUTION (EBD)Electronic Brake-force Distribution works intandem with ABS, automatically adjusting thebraking force applied to front and rear wheels, tohelp maintain directional stability underheavy braking.EMERGENCY BRAKE ASSIST (EBA)If you have to make an emergency stop, thesystem detects the quick pedal action andautomatically boosts braking power to reducethe stopping distance.ERGONOMICSErgonomics is the applied science of designing aworking environment, in this case the car’scabin, in order to maximise the occupants’comfort and safety. In simple terms, that meanslocating major controls and instruments in a waythat makes them easy and comfortable to useand to see. This is extended to seating whichminimises driver fatigue and discomfort.FUEL CONSUMPTIONThe figures for the fuel consumption and CO 2emissions are to give you an indication of thecar’s performance. Following legislation by theVCA (Vehicle Certification Agency), all carmanufacturers generate these statistics throughthe same industry standard test. This allowscomparison across all manufacturers andmodels. The tests use a base grade version ofthe model and do not take into account optionallevels of equipment, such as different sizedwheels, tyres and other factors that can affectthe economy of the model. The test is on arolling road and there is no additional weight inthe car other than the driver (no passengers orcargo) and it does not account for individualdriving style, which can mean a difference to thefigures achievable in the real world.i-CTDiThe Honda i-CTDi engine – the ‘i’ stands for‘intelligent’ – is a new-generation direct injectionengine that uses both the latest common rail andvariable turbocharger technology. As a result, it’ssignificantly quieter, smoother, more powerfuland returns greater fuel economy thanconventional diesels.i-VTECVariable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Controlvaries the amount of valve lift and the duration ofvalve opening during the intake stroke of eachengine cylinder. The effect is optimisedcombustion over changing engine speeds withthe result of reduced fuel consumption andemissions as well as increased engineperformance.VARIABLE TURBOCHARGERTurbochargers use rotors to pressurise the airgoing into the cylinders. This increases the air’soxygen density, improving combustion andproducing more power. The turbocharger fitted tothe i-CTDi engine has variable nozzles, whichboost the airflow according to how hard youpress the accelerator – the more you put yourfoot down, the more the airflow is increased. Thisproduces instant, smooth acceleration, virtuallyeliminating the problem of ‘turbo lag’.VEHICLE STABILITY ASSIST (VSA)Vehicle Stability Assist helps keep the FR-V oncourse during fast or tight turns by detecting andcorrecting potential understeer o r oversteer. The system continually monitors vehicle speed, throttle position, individual wheel speeds, steeringangle, lateral g-force, and yaw rate to detect whenoversteer or understeer is imminent. Whennecessary, VSA automatically reduces theengine’s torque and uses the ABS system toapply brakes to each wheel, as needed, to helpstabilise the vehicle. The response is so quick thatthe instability may be corrected before the drivereven knows it’s occurring.

48 THE POWER OF DREAMSWe’ve always done things differently. Not just because we can, but because it can lead us into areas of development and discovery that we didn’t knowexisted. Because it can help make people, machines and the world a better place. This though, is only part of the story, as it’s how we apply this alternativethinking that matters the most. As our founder, Soichiro Honda once said:“We only have one future, and it will be made of our dreams, if we have the courage to challenge convention”.THE POWER TO BE DIFFERENTWe believe that engines are good. The challengeis making them better for all of us. This is why wecreated a jet with engines above the wing insteadof below to increase fuel efficiency and loweremissions. We also vowed never to manufacture2-stroke outboard engines and only make lighter, cleaner 4-strokes.ADVANCED TECHNOLOGYEvery piece of technology we create is for a reason.Even the cameras, laser sensors and microprocessorsin ASIMO, our advanced humanoid robot, areinfluencing the design of our cars to be safer andmore intelligent than ever before.THINKING AHEADA Home Energy Station that can provide fuel forour emission free fuel cell car and help to powera home. New technologies for a new way ofthinking. We’re constantly looking for new waysto help the environment. Because what we dotoday, will affect the drivers of tomorrow.
