Millie Rotman Shimetaught English and History in Toronto high schools and had a passion for teaching andlearning. In her short life she exemplified the best that any great <strong>University</strong> may expect<strong>of</strong> its alumni. Her father, the late Manny Rotman, who received his Bachelor's Degree from<strong>Woodsworth</strong> <strong>College</strong> in 1985 at age 76, wished to commemorate her memory by assistingothers who share his love <strong>of</strong> learning. The mature student program at <strong>Woodsworth</strong> <strong>College</strong>had its inaugural year in 1967 and was known then as the Pre-<strong>University</strong> <strong>Program</strong>. In 2000,with the generous support <strong>of</strong> the Rotman family, the <strong>Program</strong> was updated and receivedits new and notable name, the Millie Rotman Shime <strong>Academic</strong> <strong>Bridging</strong> <strong>Program</strong>.<strong>Academic</strong> <strong>Bridging</strong> <strong>Program</strong> OverviewThe <strong>Academic</strong> <strong>Bridging</strong> <strong>Program</strong> enables many mature students who are at least 20 yearsold to pursue degree studies at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Toronto. Each <strong>Academic</strong> <strong>Bridging</strong> courseis designed for individuals who have been away from formal education for some time anddo not meet the <strong>University</strong>'s established requirement for direct entry admissions; each isintended to bridge the gap between a student's prior secondary education and therequirements <strong>of</strong> first year university courses. Students who successfully complete the<strong>Academic</strong> <strong>Bridging</strong> <strong>Program</strong> are admitted to degree studies in the Faculty <strong>of</strong> Arts andScience, at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Toronto with one full credit towards their degree.<strong>Bridging</strong> instructors are sensitive to the needs <strong>of</strong> mature students and class sizes are small(no more than 50 students) so that all students are able to receive individual attention. Inaddition, there are a number <strong>of</strong> resources and services available to students: the <strong>Academic</strong>Writing Centre assists students with written assignments in individual appointments;Learning for Success is a one-day refresher course on effective reading and essay writing;and additional intensive Study Skill Seminars throughout the duration <strong>of</strong> the course <strong>of</strong>ferstudents additional academic support. Students also have full access to a Computer Lab, HealthServices, the Career Centre, Family Care Centre, two athletic facilities, counselling services, andall the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Toronto libraries. All these services are included in the course fee.The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Toronto and <strong>Woodsworth</strong> <strong>College</strong> are committed to making universitystudies financially accessible to students and graduates <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Academic</strong> <strong>Bridging</strong> <strong>Program</strong>.There is generous financial assistance available to help eligible students meet the costs <strong>of</strong>the course and <strong>Woodsworth</strong> <strong>College</strong> awards scholarships to top graduates <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Academic</strong><strong>Bridging</strong> <strong>Program</strong> who continue on in degree studies.October 15, 2008October 27, 20084:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.How Does the <strong>Program</strong> Work?Students who qualify for admission to the <strong>Academic</strong> <strong>Bridging</strong> <strong>Program</strong> will register in one<strong>of</strong> the three <strong>Academic</strong> <strong>Bridging</strong> courses. Students who successfully complete the course areadmitted to degree studies in the Faculty <strong>of</strong> Arts and Science (Humanities and SocialSciences) and will receive a maximum <strong>of</strong> 1.0 credit, towards their studies. A minimum finalgrade <strong>of</strong> 63% (C) is necessary to continue on in part-time degree studies and 73% (B) isrequired for full-time studies. Some degree programs have specific subject requirementsand may require certain senior high school credits in addition to the <strong>Academic</strong> <strong>Bridging</strong>course.
