The author highlights howoperators must balance their desire to be forward looking with realities ofsupporting aging infrastructure and addressing pressing water quality issues.11 Pathogens in Natural and Engineered Water Systems:Emerging IssuesTamim Younos (tyounos@vt.edu)Valerie J. Harwood, Joseph O. Falkinham III, and Hua ShenAuthors describe how pathogens can be ECs and their potential threats tohuman health. They suggest that improvements in detecton capability andfate and transport modeling are needed to help protect the public from thepotential effects of pathogens in America’s water resources.15 Endocrine Active Chemicals (EACs) in Wastewater: Effectson Health of Wildlife and HumansDavid O. Norris (David.Norris@Colorado.edu) and Alan M. VajdaSome contaminants of emerging concern are endocrine active chemicals thatinterfere with the hormone systems of wildlife and humans. The authorscharacterize the effects these chemicals can have on wildlife and suggest thatthere can be extreme fetal sensitivity to exposure to endocrine active chemicals.17 Is Your Body a Hazardous Waste Site?Laurie Peterson-Wright (laurie.peterson-wright@state.co.us)This article reviews results from recent national scope biomonitoring surveys.It describes how biomonitoring can be used as a public health tool that canprovide answers to questions about EC exposure and accumulation in humans.18 Conflicting Public Policies: Why Is It So Difficult to KeepPharmaceuticals Out of the Water?Brenda Ortigoza Bateman (brendab@tvwd.org)Ralph Thonstad and Daniel DanicicThe issues and obstacles involved in designing effective and sustainablecommunity pharmaceutical “take-back” programs are summarized. Theauthors provide examples of programs that are working from across the U.S.22 Striving for Collaborative Science and Communication Throughthe Consortium for Research and Education on EmergingContaminants (CREEC)Juliane B. Brown (jbbrown@usgs.gov) and William A. BattaglinRelates how the CREEC was formed.
