At the end of the season, aCoach of the Year will be chosen from the 11 weekly winners. The football program of the Coach of the Year willreceive a $4,000 award.Last year, Canisius coach Rich Robbins was namedthe Coach of theYear after finishinga perfect 11-0 seasonwith the Msgr.Martin Associationchampionship.“I’m so proud ofmy coaching staffand our kids,”Robbins said afterlearning of theaward. “Theybought into everythingI was givingthem for the program. With ourschedule and thestrength of ourleague, to go 11-0is a great accomplishment.”The last Msgr.Martin Associationteam to finish aseason unbeatenwas St. Joe’s in1998. The lastCanisius team tofinish unbeaten was the 1976 squad that finished 7-0-1.Robbins said that, after winning the title and finishingthe perfect season, he heard from Canisius graduatesfrom all over the world.“I have received messages from our alumni fromaround the country,” Robbins said. “I have emails fromCanisius alumni that are in the military and overseas. Thatreally brought it home to me that we did accomplishsomething very special.”Canisius beat Timon 28-20 in Ralph Wilson Stadium towin the school’s first Msgr. Martin title since 2009. QadreeOllison led Canisius as he ran for 195 yards and 3 TDs.The teams were tied 14-14 at the half.Timon recovered a Canisius fumble early in the thirdquarter and drove 77 yards for a go-ahead score. AdamDiMillo rushed in from the 3-yard line with 5:37 left in the4third quarter. A missed PAT left Timon leading by 20-14.However, Ollison began to pound away and theCanisius ground attack began to dominate. After Timon took its only lead of the game, Canisiusdrove for a TD on the following possession. Ollison ran theball on every play except one. He finished the drive whenhe rumbled 13-yards for the TD on 3rd-and-goal. ChrisAlaimo kicked the PAT and gave Canisius a 21-20 lead.Canisius held Timon bottled up deep in their own endand finally forced Timon to turn the ball over on downs attheir own 12-yard line.Canisius tookadvantage of thevery short field andpowered it’s wayinto the end zone, using Ollison in abruising, methodicaldrive. With just3:22 left. Ollisonpunched it in fromthe 3-yard line togive the Crusadersa 28-20 lead.Canisius thenforced Timon toturn the ball overon downs againafter just 4 plays. The Crusaders ranfor a first down andran out of theclock.Photo by Buffalo BillsCanisius coach Rich Robbins was named the Coach of the Year in 2012by the Buffalo Bills and the U.S. National Guard. Canisius beat Timon inthe Msgr. Martin Association title game at Ralph Wilson Stadium.Robbins saysthat his team isalready talkingabout another perfectseason in2013.“We have a ton of talent coming back,” he said. “andwe have already talked about 22-0.”With two high-profile transfers into the Canisius program, the Crusaders look like the early favorites to repeatas MMA champs. But, with games against Aquinas andOhio-powers Walsh Jesuit and Cardinal Mooney, another11-0 season will be tough.“We want to keep it rolling,” Robbins said. “The juniorsthat are coming back want to go undefeated in theirsenior year, too.”Robbins said that since taking over the Canisius program,he has tried to run it as a family-operation.“We are a program and a family,” Robbins said. “Weare a program for the 9th grader, the 55th kid on theteam and the last guy on our bench. Everyone is anequal part of our family.”

QB is Tough As a BulldogBy Mark AdairAfter two disasterous seasons, Kenmore East reboundedto finish 5-5 in 2012 and won the Class A BowlTournament championship.“The two previous years were rough,” coach MattChimera said. “We knew last year going into the seasonthat we had a nice group of kids coming up from JV. I reallythought we could be a decent team but that we neededsome time and varsity experience.”The Bulldogs opened withlosses to Grand Island andSweet Home but won four oftheir final five games.“We got on a roll and finishedstrong,” Chimera said.“A lot of our kids started to fitin at the varsity level.”Kenmore East has a solidnucleus of skill position playersreturning to the roster. They will also get reinforcementsfrom a JV team whichfinished 6-2 in 2012.“We have a lot of good skillkids coming back,” Chimerasaid. “Our JV team had theirbest record since I have beenhere. We have some goodplayers coming in.”The Bulldogs will also haveQB Connor McMahon returningfor his senior season.“Connor has been our startingQB since he was a sophomore,”Chimera said. “He’s atough, tough kid. He’s not verybig but he works his ass off.”McMahon passed for 582yards and 5 TDs last season. He also rushed for 146 yardsand a team-high 6 TDs.“He’s a very good runner,” Chimera said. “He makesthings happen with his legs.”Chimera says that McMahon has become a solid leaderfor the Bulldogs.“We’ll rely on his leadership this year,” Chimera said.“He’s a good leader who has really grown in the last coupleof years. Two years ago, he was a 10th grader leadingseniors, which is a tough thing to do. Last year when wehad that run at the end, I saw him grow as much as anyone.”McMahon says he is looking forward to building on theBulldogs’ Bowl title from last season.“I’m excited,” the senior said. “We have a lot to look forwardto. We have a lot of returners who worked hard inthe off-season. We got a touch of winning last year butthat makes us even more hungry to win this year.”McMahon, who is just 5-9 and 150 pounds, has alsoplayed three years of varsity football while battled a medicalcondition that makes it difficult to gain any weight.“Pound-for-pound he is our toughest kid,” Chimera said.“He works hard in the weight room but just can’t gainweight. He lifted hard all year long for three years and justcan’t put on any weight.”McMahon has a rare disorder called Maple Syrup UrineDisease, an metabolic disorder so rare that only three kidsin NY State have been diagnosedwith the disease.“It’s an Amino Acid deficiency,”McMahon said. “I can’thave any meat, cheese or fish.I have to be very careful withmy diet. If I can take care ofmy disease, I’m fine. But if Idon’t take care of it and burn abunch of calories, I’ll get sick.”Keeping MSUD under controlrequires careful monitoringof blood chemistry andinvolves both a special dietand frequent testing.“I have to take a supplement,”McMahon said. “It’s likea milkshake and I have to drinkit every day. Once in a while,I’ll have to drink it at halftimebecause I’m not feeling well.”Chimera says thatMcMahon proves his toughnesswith every practice andevery game.“Most kids who have hisPhoto by Mark AdairQB Connor McMahon will start his 3rd varsity seasonfor Kenmore East. McMahon has battled a seriousmedical problem while leading the Bulldogs.7problem can’t play football,”Chimera said, “or even anythingelse. He has days wherehe is not 100 percent and wejust have to recognize that.”McMahon says he is luckyto be playing football - or doing anything else.“Most kids who have this aren’t fully mentally developed,”he said. “They end up mentally retarded and arephysically incapable of playing anything. Newborn screeningsaved my life. I am so thankful to be in the position Iam. I feel lucky.”McMahon says that a liver transplant may be in hisfuture.“I really don’t need it right now,” he said, “and I feel thatshould not take a liver from somebody who really needs it.”He also says that, despite what people may think, being5-9 and 150 pounds is not a handicap on the football field.“It’s not the outside that’s important in football,”McMahon said, “it’s the inside. If you don’t have the heartto stick your nose in there and make a play, it doesn’t matterhow big you are.”

The Heart of a Champion Character Playbook theme isAnswer The Call!ATTENTIVE, NSWER THE CALLCTF’s vision is to develop the hearts of coaches andathletes to be men of character for others.Cross Training Football is now working with 40 teamsacross WNY (Thank you to all who are in the process) Thisyear’s Theme is ANSWER THE CALLThe letter A stands for being Attentive: To be “attentive”means to listen and watch carefully with INTENSE concentration.Simpley put, have Eyes to see and Ears to hear.Being attentive is the key to being in the moment, andunderstanding what needs to be done. The question is: areyou ready for Week One! Stands will be full, cheerleaderswill be cheerleading, student sections will be going crazy. Butwill you have the will power to block that all out and focus onthe task at hand? Will you execute your assignment, will you do your 1/11on each and every play until the whistle is blown? The how is in this belief statement.“Be on Guard” and purpose in your heart to stay thecourse. In other words will you be attentive from the openingkickoff till when the clock reads 00:00?The decision is yours! Be alert and be attentive, focus onthe task and beat your opponent to the punch !!! If you as ateam believe, think, love, and work all together you will notonly be COMPLETE but you will ANSWER THE CALL!Act justly, love mercy and walk humbly!Coach MastersCross Training Football on the Radio!Every Saturday 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm!ONE HOUR of FOOTBALL TALK each week!Andersons Player of the week in AA, A, B,C, D,DD, and Msgr. He wanted to gethis feet a little quickerand we can already seethe improvement.”Osburn said thatStauss set a goal to playat less than 300 poundsthis season.“He’s a good kid anda hard worker,” Osburnsaid. “When he getssomething in his mind,he’s not going to bestopped.”Osburn says thatStauss has shownsteady improvementsince he entered Albion as a freshman.“Every year, he has gotten better and better,” Osburnsaid. “He listens. He makes improvements. I have noexpectations other than that he will get better again thisyear, just like he always has.”Stauss is already on the recruiting lists of several collegeprograms and is getting noticed around the state. Hewas selected for the Rising Juniors Upstate-Downstategame and would have played but the game was cancelled.“He’s big, strong and knows where everyone should beat all times,” Osburn said. “Once he gets his hands onsomeone, they will go in whatever direction he wantsSee “Cover Story” on page 23

CoverStorycontinued from page 22them to go. I would hope he would be a Trench Trophyfinalist this season because he is that good.”If Stauss is ready to take a leading role on the footballstage, maybe it’s because he has experience with performingin a leading role.Stauss earned leading roles in the past two Albion HighSchool musicals. In 2012 he played the role of Captain VonTrapp in theschool’s production of The Sound of Music. This pastspring, Stauss played the role of Lumiere, the candlestick,in Beauty and the Beast.“As a little kid I was always in the chorus and the choir,”Stauss said. “I got into acting and the musicals in my 8thgrade year at Oakfield-Alabama. Singing, dancing and actingis something I love to do. I took dancing for five yearsand I think it helps with my footwork in football.”Osburn admits that it is rare for a football player to alsoplay such a big part in the theatre department.“You could coach for 20 more years and not get manykids across your plate like Steven Stauss,” he said. “Hehas the lead in the school play the last 2 years. When he’sdone with play practice, he comes into the weight roomand squats 400 pounds. He’s a special kid with a lot of differenttalents. He doesn’t fit the mold of an offensive lineman.”Stauss, a team captain, is being actively recruited byseveral college football programs, including Buffalo,Syracuse, Boston College, New Hampshire, Albany,Bucknell, Wagner College and Division III Hobart.“Harvard and Yale have asked about him, too,” Osburnsaid, “but I think he’s just a little under their academicbenchmark.”Stauss maintains an academic average of 92 and hasscored a 1030 on his SAT.“He works hard in the classroom just like he does witheverything else,” Osburn said. “He won’t have an issuebeing accepted academically to any college that wantshim. He’s from a great family. Both his mom and his dadwere athletes in college. His dad played football atCortland State.”Osburn says that he will rely heavily on Stauss this season, like he has in past seasons.“He’s a team captain,” Osburn said. “If we need somethingdone, big or small, he’s the guy we go to, the kidsknow he’s been around a long time and they listen to him.”Stauss says that he has high hopes for his senior year.“We have a lot of returning starters with experience,” hesaid. “Our line has three guys back who are 3-year startersand the team chemistry is great this year. I think we have agood chance to win the league and be a contender for theSection 6 finals.”A run to the Ralph would get Stauss noticed.“Some people know who he is,” Osburn said. “But kidsget noticed when the team does well. Going 2-6 in a gooddivision won’t get you noticed. If your team gets recognized, you get recognized. If we can make a splash thisyear, he’ll be right in line for a lot of the awards at the end.”23Tune in toTALKFOOTBALL!!Be sure to LISTEN Saturday Morning from 10 to 11!!Tony Caligiuri Sean Bruso Mike Ferrentino Roger Weiss(716) 803-0550

THEEXTRAP O I N TBy Mark AdairThe ONLY SportI went to lunch at Papa Grande’s the other day and Isaw my friend Otto Slamkowski sitting on a stool. He hada crumpled copy of the Football Weekly in his back pocketand he was chomping on his ever-present cigar.Otto had the Buffalo News open and was reading MikeHarrington’s column.“Hey, Otto,” I greeted him. “What’s Mike got to sayabout the sports world today?”“Nothin’,” Otto said. “He didn’t write about sports at all.Just a bunch of crap about theRed Sox and the Yankees anda bunch of other stuff nobodycares about.”“What the heck are youtalking about?” I asked, incredulous. “A lot of peoplecare about the Yankees. TheYankees have more fans thanany sports team in the world.”“The Yankees are not asports team,” Otto growled.“They are a baseball team.”“Baseball isn’t a sport? How can baseball not be a sport,” I asked, growing a bituneasy. I had a feeling that I should have left this subjectuntouched.“Did you ever try to actually watch a baseball game?”Otto asked sarcastically. “I’m usually asleep by the secondinning. Heck, a perfect game in baseball is whennothing happens! It may as well be soccer.”“Okay,” I said. “I understand that some people likemore action. But what about basketball? There is almostcontinual action in basketball.”“Yeah, until you get to the last three minutes of thegame,” Otto said. “Then there is an unending parade tothe foul line interrupted only by each coach taking all 15of their allotted timeouts. I once turned on a basketballgame and there were 6.7 seconds left. I went out andmowed the lawn and when I came back there were still3.4 seconds left. So I went back out and changed the oilin my truck. When I came back in some guy hit a buzzerbeaterto win the game. Besides, a real sport requirescontact. When contact occurs in basketball, they call afoul.”“Well,” I said, “there’s lots of action in hockey andthere’s a lot of contact, too.”Football is theONLY sport...everything elseis a game.53“Hockey is pretty cool,” Otto said grudgingly, “but itain’t really a sport because they allow fighting. If they gotrid of the fighting I might reconsider. Real men don’t handletheir frustrations on the playing field by throwing fists. They simply flatten their opponent with a good, cleanshoulder-to-the-mouth on the next play.”“I see. So what about women’s sports?”“The only girls that play sports are those girls in thatsemi-pro football league,” Otto said.“I bet some Olympic ice skaters would disagree withyou,” I said.“Ice skating is stupid,” Otto said. “The only thing thatwould make ice skating a sport is if they sent all thosegirls out onto the ice to do their Triple Toe-Loops at thesame time. The way you would win is to knock the othergirls off their skates and onto their butts. If a girl gotknocked down she would be eliminated. Last girl standingwins the Gold.”“Then you must think thatRoller Derby is a sport.”“Don’t be a jerk,” Ottosneered. “Roller Derby andProfessional Wrestling arescripted shows. They may aswell be boxing.”“But there are lots of peoplethat don’t like football thatare into sports,” I said. “Justlook at the sports pages. There is wrestling -”Otto interrupted.“Two guys rolling around ona mat in their underwear. Lovely.”I continued. “There is cross country -”“Cross Country isn’t a sport,” Otto said. “Running fourmiles over hills and through mud is exercise for do-goodersthat eat tofu and bean sprouts for lunch every day.”“Well, what about Golf?” I asked.“Anything that requires you to get out of the way andlet somebody else play through isn’t a sport.”“Tennis?”“Ping Pong on grass.”“I guess that leaves Bowling,” I said.Otto started laughing.“What’s so funny?” I asked.“I’m in a bowling league,” Otto said.“And you don’t consider it a sport?”“Heck, no!” Otto roared. “Look at me! I’m sixty-threeyears old. I smoked cigars since I was 12 and the onlyexercise I get is when I go out and sit on my riding lawnmower and cut the grass. If I can bowl, it ain’t a sport.”“Well, look,” I said, “I do agree that football is the bestsport but -”“Wrong,” Otto said. “Football in the ONLY sport.Everything else is a game.”
