Welcome A New Leaf Cottages
Providing a continuum of services for
children and families with behavioral
and shelter needs has propelled A New
Leaf forward for over 40 years. As an
agency that thrives on being a catalyst
for change, the next logical step is to
implement more long-term solutions to
these critical needs.
Moving forward with a vision of
expanding services for the homeless, and
with the support of A New Leaf Foundation,
A New Leaf Cottages 501(c)3
has been formed and purposed with
providing permanent housing solutions.
Together with the wraparound services
of A New Leaf’s behavioral health and
community programs, the collaboration
is a natural fit for the long-term success
of the communities’ homeless including
young people exiting foster care and
emergency shelter as well as the lowincome
population.
Cottages Board Chair, Bill Scott puts it
this way, “Shelter housing always has a
condition and is temporary. By the time
you start to get on your feet, it is time to
move on. With a permanent supportive
Torrie Taj, Chief Operating Officer of A
help individuals who are in need, the
entire community will benefit.”
John’s Story
John has been a motivating
force for me personally as he
enlightened my understanding
to why we need to move beyond
shelter at A New Leaf and create
permanent supportive housing.
I’ll never forget the day 12-yearold
John came to our youth shelter as a scared,
abused and abandoned little boy. During the
intake, we cleaned lice out of his hair, tended to
old, scabbed cigarette burns and tried our best
to make him feel comfortable.
What was supposed to be a temporary 30-day
shelter stay turned into a year and a half. We,
A Message from the Board President and CEO
Michael T. Hughes
CEO
Mike Hutchinson
Board Chair
The East Valley Men’s Center
(EVMC) is now able to support
10 additional men, bringing
the total served on a daily basis
to 94!
From mission, to vision and on to reality, A New Leaf services are growing and
are more diverse than ever before. The agency’s Board-driven strategic plan
for the future is coming to fruition, providing comprehensive, sustainable
services and ensuring long-term solutions for the communities’ critical needs.
Behavioral health services are seeing growth with the addition of a summer
teen program for 8th grade students that concentrates on increasing school
attendance and academic performance while the After School/Summer
program is gearing up for a busy season.
Most impactful for the community is that behavioral health services for minoraged
children are now available to the general public through third party
insurance contracts and private payment. Locations include the Dorothy B.
Mitchell Counseling Center in Mesa (480.969.6955) and the West Valley Behavioral
Health Services office in Glendale (623.934.1991). If you or someone you
know can benefit from these services, please call.
Thank you for hoping, believing, and helping these endeavors be realized.
Your financial gifts, volunteer efforts and support make all things possible at
raising over $8,600 for Faith House Domestic Violence Shelter.
The Council was joined by guests at their second annual Corks
for a Cause fundraising event held at Total Wine in Glendale.
Festivities included a raffle, silent auction and door prizes. The
event was hosted by the WVAC, Trilogy Vistancia Women’s
Club and Total Wine. Thank you to our sponsors, volunteers
and all our friends who participated, making the event a
success for the women and children of Faith House.
Brittany and Nehemiah
Brittany’s Story
Being a single mom is hard work. Trying to finish high school and being a single mom is even harder,
as Brittany soon found out.
Growing up in foster care, Brittany knew that she wanted to make a better life for her son. She was in
high school when she gave birth to Nehemiah. Turning 18 and aging out of the foster care program,
she realized her dreams of getting a diploma were dissolving quickly.
Brittany came to A New Leaf’s EMPOWER program because she was looking for stable housing and
wanted to learn good parenting skills. Through her time at EMPOWER, Brittany has received her high
school diploma and will be attending Maricopa Community College this fall.
Sure, being a single mom is still hard work, but with the support of staff and learning the tools to
succeed, Brittany feels that she is on her way to accomplishing so much more!
If you know a homeless young adult, ages 18-25, who aged out of the foster care system, please tell
them about our EMPOWER program.
Future: Endowing
Your Legacy
ENDOWMENT GIFTS grow over time, providing long-term
funding resources that ensure support year after year. One
great benefit is that the principal of your gift remains intact
for perpetuity; it is the gift that keeps on giving. Options
include outright gifts, multi-year pledges or planned gifts.
LEGACY GIFTS are part of your estate planning process and
typically are funded at a later time. They will be placed in
the Endowment Fund where the principal is never touched
or, remain unrestricted gifts that will help support the
greatest need or, be restricted to a specific area (ie. homeless
programming). Options include life insurance, retirement
plan funds, charitable trusts, gift annuities or a “bequest” in
your will or trust.
Arizona Gives You a Way to Give Back
If there was a way to give hope and help to the homeless, and it didn’t cost you anything,
would you consider doing it? The state of Arizona offers you that opportunity through the
Helping the Working Poor Tax Credit.
A $200 donation ($400 if filing jointly) could get you a dollar for dollar tax credit on your
Arizona state tax return. This tax credit is in addition to the school tax credit.
Last year A New Leaf received over $100,000 through the working poor tax credit, to support
working poor individuals and families with services.
For more information please contact your tax advisor.
as staff, became his family. It was evident that John would most
likely never have parents or relatives that could care for him.
Due to his past, he demonstrated severe mental and physical
health issues that were addressed on a daily basis.
Fast forward 10 years… I’m giving a tour at the East Valley Men’s
Center shelter. As I walk through the living area and kitchen,
a man followed and approached me. As I searched his face,
noting the graying hair and weathered skin he said “you’ve got
to be Torrie” and I immediately knew who he was before he
added... “I’m John.” I instinctively gave him a hug, saying “Oh
my gosh, how are you and how’s your asthma?”
He replied, “I will never forget the time you spent overnight in
the hospital with me.”
I tried my best to keep my emotions in check and tears from
flowing, when he continued telling me that the best year and a
half of his life was the time he spent in shelter with Dee, Lance
and me. He remembered us by name.
Later I learned that John grew up in many group homes. Having
“aged out” of the foster care system at 18, he struggled on and
off with being homeless, his mental health and finding his way.
That sleepless night I thought about John; questioning how
living in a shelter without a family at the age of 12 can be the
best time of someone’s life. I felt good that we were there
for him as a child, but questioned if shelter was ever enough
for some people who have multiple challenges. I believe they
deserve better and look forward to the day A New Leaf opens
the doors to permanent supportive housing and services for
John and the many others like him. - By Torrie Taj
“We would like to express our “BIG”
thank you very much for our stay
here at La Mesita! It was very
much appreciated from our hearts
and well worth it. The staff and
volunteers were the best!!!
We would never thought in a
million years that there was such
a place that would save and
change lives. All the activities, the
work-shops, the meetings and most
especially, meeting other people
from all walks of life, has given us
a lot to be thankful for. La Mesita’s
staff and volunteers are heaven-sent
to me and my family!! We are
forever grateful .
