NL March06 - Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk

#92#93OUR FAMILIES#91#94Recent house completions and dedications include:House # 91 - The Poole family celebrated in Quiogue with family, friends and community supporters. Their house was madepossible through the partnership of Riverhead Building Supply and the Greater Hamptons Interfaith Council.House # 92 - In December Santa Claus presented the Flores-Santiago family with the keys to their new home. Stony BrookUniversity proudly built this, their 4th house with Habitat, with the family in Bellport.House # 93 - The Fowler family happily looks on as their Pastor blesses their new home in Central Islip. Long time Habitathouse sponsor Duralee Fabrics teamed up with the realtor organizations of LIBOR and NYSAR to build the house.House # 94 - Marilyn Lopez cuts the ribbon on her new front porch in Central Islip. After overcoming a rained out wallraising, all came up roses as the rescheduled day was a success. She worked alongside her daughters and employees ofhouse sponsor Symbol Technologies to complete her dream home.Houses # 95 and 96 soon to follow! Thanks to Mrs. Aura Levitas, Lowe’s HomeImprovement Stores, The Roslyn SavingsFoundation and hundreds of womenvolunteers, Habitat will be dedicating two newhomes on May 6th, 2006 - one for KinteMcNair and her three children, the other forTerell Butler and her son. The Mc NairFamily home will be dedicated in memory ofMary Sammis (pictured left), a HabitatWomen Build volunteer who died tragicallyon a hiking expedition in January when she, her husband, and three children werejust hours away from realizing her dream of having the “adventure of a lifetime” andreaching the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro.Mary Sammis’ family asked other family members and friends to make donations toHabitat in her memory. They asked us to remember Mary and Habitat is proud todedicate this home in her memory. Her husband Scott believes Mary’s legacy andthe lessons they learned on Mt. Kilimanjaro will help his family and friends goon…”one step at a time, one breath at a time. The sun comes up, goes down, comesup and we’ll make it, she’s with us, we know that.”Sharing the Gift of Giving…Thanks to our sponsors, donors and supporting families like the Sammis’, Habitat will beconstructing 15 new homes for 15 new families in 2006 - the year of our 100th HOME!There are so many ways you can help us give local low-income working families a handup. Like the Sammis family, you can remember or honor someone or a special life eventby designating Habitat as the recipient of these special donations. We will send a beautifulcard acknowledging the donation to the recipient of your choice. Another way topartner with Habitat in the future is by taking one simple step proclaiming yoursupport….remember Habitat in your Will. You will be making not only a special gift, buta difference in the life of a Suffolk County family in need. Recently Habitat for Humanityof Suffolk received a bequest of $69,000 from the estate of Mary Rose Samson. Her giftwill be used to build another Habitat home in 2007 which will be built in her memory.(above) Habitat’s Dan Walker accepts acheck from attorney Audrey Bloom fromthe estate of Mary Rose Samson

This project was the culmination of successful fundraising efforts from many different organizations, religious andschool groups, benefit concerts, individuals and associations.Habitat received donations of materials from Sherwood Lumber and was equally blessed with a donation of a truck fromthe Natuzzi Brothers Ice Company. In addition to shipping the frames down to Beaumont for reconstruction as part ofthe re-building efforts, Habitat Nassau and Suffolk are joining together to contribute a total of $75, 000 to the BeaumontHabitat affiliate as part of Operation Home delivery.Volunteer groups from Nassau and Suffolk, including Connetquot High School, Half Hollow Hills West High School, WaltWhitman High School, Friends Academy, Long Island Lutheran High School, The Long Island Real Estate Group,Zydeco Road/IMAC Theater, and other individual volunteers worked together with our staff at Habitat’s new ReStorewarehouse to complete the project in 5 days! For more information about how you can help support Habitat as the Gulf Region affiliates continue with the rebuildingefforts, please visit Habitat International’s website www.habitat.org/disaster/2005/katrina/default.aspx or call them at 1-800-HABITATYou car donation can help Habitatbuild homes in partnership withfamilies in need of decent, affordableshelter.
