1THE MEASURE OF AN ASSOCIATION is how it gets resultsfor its members, while providing value and professional service. With more than 300 member companies, the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) has an unwavering commitment tothe heating, cooling, water heating, and commercial refrigeration industryto deliver results in our core focus areas of standards, certification, and advocacy.Headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, AHRI’s professional staff—severalof whom have served the industry for more than 20 years—offer theengineering, communications, meeting planning, financial, andmanagement expertise critical to addressing the many issues facedby our member companies in North America and around the world. In these pages, you will get a glimpse of a “year in the life” of a dynamicand effective trade association and its activities and accomplishmentson behalf of its members and the industry.
22010 was a good yearof growth and opportunityfor AHRI and for our industry. Our accomplishments are furtherproof that by coming together,we can accomplish far morethan we ever could have asseparate organizations.
3Letter from theChairman and PresidentTHIS YEAR WE FINALLY WERE ABLE to begin to break out of the recessiondoldrums, as one, united industry. In 2010, the Environmental Protection Agency named AHRI a RecognizedCertification Body for its ENERGY STAR program. Shipments of residentialfurnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, and water heaters increased acrossthe board. And we came within one vote of passing our consensus agreementsin Congress. On the global front, we advanced our consistent message of harmonizedstandards and certification programs in Colombia, United Arab Emirates,Saudi Arabia, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, India, and China. In February alone,AHRI signed three international agreements on standards and certificationharmonization, one with the Indian Society of Heating, Refrigerating, andAir-Conditioning Engineers (ISHRAE) and the Refrigeration and Air-ConditioningManufacturers Association (RAMA); one with the Saudi Standards, Metrology, and Quality Association (SASO); and one with the UAE’s Emirates Standardizationand Metrology Authority (ESMA).In April, China’s General Machinery Product Inspection Institute (GMPI) becamethe first laboratory outside the U.S. to complete an AHRI-sanctioned certificationtest. The chiller certification test is the first of many such tests to be conductedby the Chinese lab. This is a significant first step in AHRI’s effort to find globaltesting partners that can deliver the quality and integrity that are hallmarks ofour certification program.Stephen Yurek and Ray HoglundAs part of our effort to educate members of Congress about our industry and thestate of American manufacturing, Marvair hosted Rep. Sanford Bishop (D-Ga.)at its facilities and engineering laboratory in Cordele, Ga. Congressman Bishopcame away impressed with what he saw, stating it was proof that Americancompanies can compete in the global economy. Visits such as this help not onlyestablish a relationship with Congressional representatives, but also help educatethem about issues facing American manufacturing. AHRI’s government affairsstaff can help you arrange these visits. All in all, 2010 was a good year of growth and opportunity for AHRI and for ourindustry. Our accomplishments are further proof that by coming together, wecan accomplish far more than we ever could have as separate organizations. We look forward to an even better 2011.Stephen YurekAHRI PRESIDENT AND CEORay Hoglund2010 AHRI CHAIRMAN OF THEBOARD OF DIRECTORS

5Setting the StandardAHRI is one of the premier standards-setting organizations inthe nation, with more than 80 standards and guidelines availablefor free download from the AHRI website. Our standards arerecognized, used, and emulated around the world; associationsand government entities in nations and regions across the globework with us to either adopt or harmonize our standards for theiruse. Many of our standards have been accredited as AmericanNational Standards by the American National Standards Institute(ANSI), and they form the basis for our internationally renownedperformance certification programs. In 2010 nearly 50,000 usersacross the globe reviewed ordownloaded AHRI standards. AHRI signed a tripartiteagreement with the IndianSociety of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers(ISHRAE) and the Refrigerationand Air-ConditioningManufacturers Association(RAMA) establishing the basisfor cooperation on standardsharmonization, and laying thegroundwork for cooperation onfuture performance certificationprograms. In 2010, volunteers fromAHRI member companiescontributed nearly 5,000 hoursto develop new and revised AHRIstandards. In addition to in-personmeetings, the use of over 100web-conference meetings resultedin significant cost savings andparticipation by a wider groupof experts. The American NationalStandards Institute (ANSI)approved 24 AHRI standards, all of which will becomeAmerican National Standards.Tripartite agreement signing byAHRI, ISHRAE, and RAMAAHRI hosted a reception at the ASHRAE Summer Meeting in Albuquerque tohonor AHRI members who serve on ASHRAE committees
6Setting the Standard continued AHRI hosted a reception atthe 2010 ASHRAE summermeeting in Albuquerque tohonor those AHRI members whoserve on ASHRAE committees.Their experience, expertise, andknowledge is invaluable to thestandards-setting process. AHRI signed cooperativeagreements with the SaudiStandards, Metrology and QualityAssociation (SASO) and the UAE’sEmirates Standardization andMetrology Authority (ESMA) toadopt AHRI’s standards as Saudiand UAE national standards, respectively, in some cases withregional adaptations.AHRI StandardsEngineer DannyAbbate addressesCANENAattendees AHRI persuaded InternationalCode Council delegates to rejectrevisions to the InternationalEnergy Conservation Code thatwould have mandated the use ofcertain water heater technologiesand higher minimum energyefficiency standards for residentialair conditioners and furnaces, placed restrictions on the use ofpilot lights on gas appliances, andbanned the installation of vent-freegas heaters. AHRI Vice President ofInternational Affairs Jim Walterspresented at the April UnitedArab Emirates Energy EfficiencyStandards and Labeling Seminarin Dubai. Mr. Walters presenteda model, based on U.S. practice,of how industry and governmentcan partner to set realistic energyefficiency performance standardsand, specifically, on the rolethat industry can play in thatpartnership. AHRI Standards EngineerDanny Abbate presented at theCouncil for Harmonization ofElectrotechnical Standards of theNations of the Americas (CANENA)Conference in San José, CostaRica, on the development ofelectrical safety and performancestandards for the air conditioning, heating, and refrigeration industry. He also discussed the certificationprograms that have evolved insupport of energy efficiencyregulations in the United Statesand elsewhere.AHRI President and CEO Stephen Yurekwith SASO Director General Nabil Molla
7Vital Industry ResearchThe research arm of the association, theAir-Conditioning, Heating, and RefrigerationTechnology Institute (AHRTI), serves asthe industry’s “think tank,” coordinatingresearch activities in a variety of technicalareas. Prior to this year, AHRTI was known asARTI, the Air-Conditioning and RefrigerationTechnology Institute. In 2010, ARTI project, Review of Regulationsand Standards for the Use of Refrigerantswith Global Warming Potential (GWP) Valuesless than 20 in HVAC&R Applications, wascompleted by Navigant Consulting, Inc. Theproject involved a comprehensive review ofthe regulatory issues in the United States, the European Union, and Japan that arerelevant to the use of emerging low-GWP refrigerants. On July 9, 2010, California's South Coast Air Quality Management District’s(SCAQMD) governing board approved a recommendation tofund four proposed research projects on the developmentof low NOx furnaces. The approved projects include a GasTechnology Institute (GTI) proposal that incorporated severalaspects of AHRI’s suggested research program previouslypresented to the SCAQMD staff.
8Product Testingand CertificationAny manufacturer can “rate” a product asmeeting a specific performance standard, but when a product bears the AHRIPerformance Certified ® mark, consumers know it has been testedby a third-party laboratory and shown to meet the performanceclaims of the manufacturer. 19Letter from theIncoming ChairmanI am excited to be taking the helm of our dynamic and innovative association duringa pivotal time in our history. As we work to increase our effectiveness, heighten ourinnovation, and strengthen awareness of the importance of our industry, we must bear inmind that it is our credibility as an organization that ultimately will set us apart, both hereand abroad. Credibility makes our organization the solid, reliable, dynamic association it is,and it will be one of the main areas of focus during my chairmanship.Credibility enables us to create and maintain the world-class industry performancecertification program that is increasingly relied upon throughout the world, along withthe standards and guidelines on which our certification programs are based. Withoutthat credibility, global HVACR organizations and government entities would not want toharmonize or adopt our standards for their countries and regions. Our credibility led to theEPA naming AHRI a Recognized Certification Body for its revamped ENERGY STAR Program. With that in mind, I will continue to share our positive message with other nations, whilealso spending a good bit of time ensuring that our priorities are heard and acted on hereat home. I will also spend time working to ensure the gains we’ve made in terms of comingtogether as a united association are sustained and built upon. Our strength lies in our beinga united, credible, inclusive organization.Sincerely,Morrison Carter2011 AHRI CHAIRMAN
