Issue 118The volume of take up of AM on this band has been quiteunexpectedly high and is most encouraging for the future ofthe mode. For those who have yet to venture onto5 MHz/60 m, I would encourage you to do so. Please ignorethe over-hyped stories that you may have heard aboutpeople complaining of AM being allowed. These critics arevery few in number and are mostly confined to the 5 MHzGroup where they are vastly outnumbered by supporters, many of whom may not operate AM themselves, but whonone the less believe in the principle that the amateur bandsare open for everyone to operate within the terms of theirlicence, whatever the transmission mode. In reality,5 MHz/60 m is very much a gentleman’s band.VMARSIan Underwood M0YMKSUBSCRIPTIONRENEWALSSubscription renewal formswere sent out to all Memberswith the November Issue ofSignal. Members are remindedthat the deadline for receipt ofrenewals has now passed and,if you have not renewed, this isthe last copy of VMARSpublications that you willreceive. As this is a finalreminder, you may still renewyour subscription subject to asurcharge of £2.50.The VMARS News SheetI would ask all Members who have paid by bank transfer orstanding order please inform me of the payment either by e-mail or the return of the Membership renewal form which allMembers will have received. I can then update the files anddatabase.Without this notification I have no payment detail, and youmay be inadvertently labelled as a lapsed Member on thedatabase. Although our bank statements will eventuallyallow us to catch up with updating the records, this results inyou, the Member, not receiving your publications fromFebruary onwards, until the update is completed.Thank you for your co-operation on this matter. If you have not notified me of your payment, this will be thelast News Sheet you will receive unless your payment hasbeen received, and the database updated accordingly. If you have any queries about your Membership status thenplease contact me via phone or email:01375640618 pete.shepherd4@btinternet.comNews from Hack GreenPete Shepherd G7DXVThe SDR receiver system remains popular judging by theserver activity log and the double size G5RV has certainlyimproved the reception capability of the receivers. A full timereplacement aerial for the SDRs will be built and installed ator around the next sale date. The 5 MHz SDR receiver has been built and will be installedduring the week of the 21 st January. On this receiver scalewe have placed graphical markers to indicate the allocatedfrequency edges for each of the allocated slots. This shouldmake it very easy to check if a transmission is, in fact, toowide. I have noted a number of VMARS transmissions whichexceeded the allocated bandwidth, along with many otherswhich did not. Testing should be done off-air of course, butwe feel that having a calibrated SDR available on the netwould be a useful tool.G2PU and the LG300With regard to the information provided in NS117 concerningLabgear, I am grateful to Peter Chadwick for drawingattention to the fact that Sant Kharbanda G2PU wasTechnical Director at Labgear and not the Managing Directorwho was Laurie G5PO. At the time Peter was working atLabgear. From the Membership Secretary.Howarth Jones GW3TMPThanks to all who have sent me their Membership renewalpayments so far by post, or e-mail notification of electronictransfer of funds. There are a large number of people who still appear on thedatabase as not having renewed their Memberships for2013. Some of these Members may have paid their fees bybank transfer, but have not sent me any notification ofpayment.March 3 rd marks the next amateur/military/junk sale whichhas grown year on year since we started some six yearsago. Last year we topped the 300 visitor mark and alsoincreased the number of traders to 25. Of course, we hadgreat weather for both the Spring and Autumn sales whichhelped; let us hope that is the case this year. I believe HackGreen was a candidate for the Society AGM but, alas, we donot have the staff to cope with both sale and AGM on thesame date, and having an alternative reason to attend theAGM was one of the goals of the Committee, and a goodidea in my opinion.January 2013 2

The aircraft was the pioneerLancaster carrying Oboe (ARI 5582), which presumablyreplaced the H2S system on board, and I cannot find anyinformation about Oboe's configuration or an Air Publicationabout it. Can you tell me whether anything exists;presumably it does and, if so, whether you might be able tohelp? The Air Ministry references for the items found are :10B/169 (appears to be serrated bakelite material); and10AB/288 and 10H/1238 which are attached to each otherand look as if they could be part of an aerial connection.3 January 2013
