This was by far the largestevent in the 12-year history of Strategiesin Light, and the first part of our conferencereport begins on page 19. The secondpart will feature in our April/May issue. Forthe second year, the exhibit area includedan LED Light & Design Pavilion, which featureda series of free presentations gearedto the interests of lighting designers, architectsand specifiers. Also running again wasthe Solid-State Lighting Investors Forum, inwhich early-stage companies gave short presentationsgeared towards the venture-capitalcommunity.However, one notable change this yearwas the HB-LED market presentation, the traditional conference opener, whichwas given by Ella Shum, Director of LEDResearch, rather than Bob Steele, who hasnow retired but is a consultant for the variousStrategies in Light events.Shum’s presentation summed up a stellaryear for the HB-LED industry, with themarket for packaged LEDs growing by 93%to reach $10.8 billion, driven by backlightingapplications. As LED penetration in TVs,notebooks and other devices saturates overthe next few years, lighting will then emergeas the main driver for market growth. TheHB-LED market forecast for 2015 is $18.9 billion,as our article on page 15 explains.Keynote speakers in the HB-LED Markettrack included Aldo Kamper, CEO ofOsram Opto Semiconductors, and MichaelHolt, CEO of Philips Lumileds. Both theseLED makers have announced that they areconverting to 6-inch wafers (see page 9), inanticipation of the growth still to come inthe HB-LED market. Both are also alreadycashing in on the current levels of growth, and were both among the top five HB-LEDmanufacturers in 2010 (by revenue, at thepackaged LED level – see page 15). Nichiawas top, followed by Samsung LED.Elsewhere in the LED supply chain,MOCVD equipment suppliers such as Veecoand Aixtron are also riding the LED wave.Veeco recently unveiled its TurboDisc Max-Bright multi-reactor MOCVD system, whichhas a capacity of up to 216 × 2-inch wafers,or 56 × 4-inch, 24 × 6-inch or even 12 ×8-inch wafers (www.ledsmagazine.com/news/8/2/10). ________ Meanwhile, rival Aixtronmore than doubled its revenue during fiscal2010 (www.ledsmagazine.com/press/30502).Huge numbers of MOCVD machinesare being ordered, especially in China. Forexample, GCL-Poly plans to install 100MOCVD systems by the end of 2011 in a newLED production plant in Jiangsu, along with170 sapphire crystal growth furnaces. Parentcompany GCL Power plans to invest a totalof $2.5 billion and purchase a total of 400-500 MOCVD systems. Which should keepAixtron busy for a while.Next year, Strategies in Light 2012 will beheld on February 7-9 in Santa Clara, CA.
