JOHN C. MAVRIS SOCIAL SCIENCESIDENTITY CONSTRUCTION AND ‘SOCIALNETWORKING’: AN ETHNOGRAPHIC STUDY OF THEMOBILE PHONE OWNERSHIP PRACTICES AND USAGEPATTERNS OF TEENAGERS IN CYPRUSCHAPTER 1INTRODUCTIONMobile phones have only been available for public consumption since the early 1990’s.Even so, Electronic Design recently heralded the mobile phone (or ‘cell phone’ as it iscommonly referred to in the United States) as “the ultimate ubiquitous personalcommunicator” (Frenzel 2004). More importantly, forthe purpose and scope of this study:…the mobile telephone has become almost completely integrated intoadolescent culture (Ling 2001).Impelled and inspired by the above, this paper attempts to examine a segment of Cypriotadolescent culture with regards to mobile phones, in order to open up to furtherinvestigation the plausibility of Ling’s pervasive proposal. More specifically, this researchstudy posits to determine and describe the ownership practices and usage patterns ofteenagers in Cyprus, vis-à-vis the mobile phone, through a group of thirteen teenagers(seven boys and six girls) residing in Nicosia at the time of this study. It is acknowledged that inferences and deductions are not generalizable to the entireadolescent population living in Cyprus. The portrayal ofthese teenagers, however, doesdemonstrate noteworthy consistency with other studies of a similar nature abroad and is, atleast, an authentic representation ofthe subjective reality ofthe teenagers studied.
