Where to Start on your JourneyInduction for New <strong>Governor</strong>sCongratulations on becoming a school governor!When you first become a governor it can be difficult to know where to start. The Inductioncourse we offer will give you fundamental information you need to be an effective governor.It is essential for all new governors to underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir roles, to begin to make a positivedifference on <strong>the</strong>ir governing bodies <strong>and</strong> feel <strong>the</strong>y are contributing.The Induction sessions cover <strong>the</strong> three key roles of governors:• acting strategically• being a critical friend• ensuring accountabilityYou have <strong>the</strong> choice of doing all three sessions in one day or three separate evening sessionsat a variety of locations around <strong>the</strong> county. The Next Steps on your JourneyOnce you have completed your induction course <strong>the</strong>re are six overview courses that werecommend. Completing <strong>the</strong>se will give you a very good underst<strong>and</strong>ing of <strong>the</strong> roles <strong>and</strong>responsibilities of a governor <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> governing body. These overview sessions are also usefulas refreshers for experienced governors.Once you have completed all six courses you will be awarded a Certificate of SchoolGovernance Studies which recognises your contribution <strong>and</strong> commitment. Completing <strong>the</strong>secourses will give you a really good underst<strong>and</strong>ing of <strong>the</strong> roles <strong>and</strong> responsibilities of governorswhich help you add value to <strong>the</strong> work of your governing body. This session will help you explore what accountability means in your school, <strong>and</strong>how <strong>the</strong> governing body can develop its role as an effective critical friend.Promoting <strong>the</strong> Wellbeing of PupilsThis workshop will provide governors with an underst<strong>and</strong>ing as to what is required to supportschools in promoting <strong>the</strong> physical, mental <strong>and</strong> emotional wellbeing of pupils, including <strong>the</strong>contribution of spiritual, moral, social <strong>and</strong> cultural <strong>development</strong>, PSHE, SEAL <strong>and</strong> HealthySchools.Getting a Head StartAppointing a new headteacher is one of <strong>the</strong> most difficult, <strong>and</strong> most important, decisions agoverning body will need to make. Developing a <strong>Governor</strong> Visit PolicyAn interactive <strong>training</strong> session aimed at developing a policy <strong>and</strong> protocols for governors’ visits.This useful session needs to involve staff to ensure that everyone is clear <strong>and</strong> in agreementabout <strong>the</strong> governors’ role when making monitoring visits to <strong>the</strong> school.Governing Body Self-ReviewA facilitated session with an experienced governor tutor which will give governing bodies anopportunity to assess <strong>the</strong>ir strengths <strong>and</strong> weaknesses: resulting in an action plan for <strong>the</strong>irown <strong>development</strong>. This course offers you a valuable opportunity to take a step back from busymeetings <strong>and</strong> evaluate <strong>the</strong> effectiveness of our governing body. To be effective this sessionneeds <strong>the</strong> participation of <strong>the</strong> majority of your governing body. (A review can be booked for sixmonths after initial GBDS to monitor <strong>and</strong> evaluate progress, <strong>the</strong> review will be at an additionalcharge.)
