Referentie RP/ 2011 – RP584PHD : Master in Pharmacy, sciences (biology, biochemistry & -technology), in bio-engineering for PhD‘PLProt’ (Biological Standardisation)Description of the PhD-projectThe Institute of Public Health offers a PhD-project to a master in Pharmacy, Sciences (biology, biochemistry & -technology) or Bio-engineer .You are responsible for the organisation, execution and reporting of the research project ‘PLPROT’. Theresult of your research will contribute to a PhD.You will be part of the unit ’Biological Standardisation’ and will supported by senior scientist of thisdepartment. The PhD is in collaboration with a Flemish University. You are responsible for the research project entitled: „The use of proteomics for the quality control ofplasma-derived medicinal products’, with the following main research lines:Plasma-derived medicinal products are an extraordinary class of medicinal products due to the specialnature of their raw material, namely human blood or plasma. They are stable pharmaceutical productsobtained by fractionating pools of human plasma in large scale industrial processes in which the desiredplasma proteins are isolated from the other proteins in human plasma.Plasma-derived medicinal products are biologicals, with inherent variability in production and control as aconsequence. For instance, even within the product group of human normal immunoglobulins forintravenous administration (IVIG) variations in the manufacturing processes (plasma fractionation method, further purification steps, virus inactivation/removal steps) result in divergent properties for the productsand they should therefore not be considered as “biosimilar” just because they have the same activeingredient. Appropriate process validation during product development and application of rigorous qualityassurance and control procedures during routine manufacture are therefore essential to ensure acontinuous supply of safe, efficacious products of comparable quality.Proteomics seem a very promising tool for quality assessment of the production process of bloodderivatives. This project will be focusing on the analysis of immunoglobulin preparations. According to aliterature search performed at present no data are published on the proteome composition of therapeuticintravenous immunoglobulin preparations (IVIGs). In addition it seems that there are too few publisheddata on head-on-head comparisons of IVIGs to confirm or reject the clinical experience ofinterchangeability of IVIG. Immunoglobulins preparations for intravenous administration thereforeconstitute a very interesting test subject for this project. The research will be performed partially atUniversity Gent and at WIV-ISP (Elsene/Ixelles)The objectives of this research are:- Obtaining a Ph.D.- The generation of knowledge (in the form of scientific publications) related to the research lines andprograms developed;- Meet the operational expectations of the institutional partners involved in the projectProfileMaster in : pharmaceutical sciences bio-engineering biochemistry and biotechnology biologyWilling to make a thesis dissertationTechnical competences:
