also strives to energize <strong>the</strong> entire school community through his work with <strong>the</strong><br />

Leadership Development Program.” Mr. <strong>Small</strong> has worked with o<strong>the</strong>r staff<br />

members to organize homecoming and Fluco Fest activities at <strong>the</strong> High School.<br />

He is <strong>the</strong> married to Stephanie Kelley and <strong>the</strong>y have two children, Erin age 15<br />

and Connor age 9.<br />

Columbia Elementary School: Ms. Sue Sheridan<br />

Ms. Sheridan, Reading and Kindergarten <strong>Teacher</strong>, has 38 years <strong>of</strong> teaching<br />

experience. She has taught Kindergarten, reading, and served as a Lead<br />

<strong>Teacher</strong> during her career in <strong>Fluvanna</strong>. She is a graduate <strong>of</strong> Bridgewater<br />

College where she earned a Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts in Sociology. She holds an<br />

endorsement in Early Education NK-4. Sue Davies, Principal <strong>of</strong> Columbia and<br />

Cunningham Elementary Schools says, “Sue Sheridan has taken <strong>the</strong> ‘lead’ in<br />

many ways at Columbia. She is a role model for staff and students. She<br />

embodies <strong>the</strong> dedication and excellence that many admire.” Ms. Sheridan and<br />

her husband Steve have 2 sons, Todd and Ryan.<br />

Cunningham Elementary School: Ms. Karen Purnell<br />

Ms. Purnell has 27 years <strong>of</strong> teaching experience and currently serves as an<br />

Instructional Coach at Cunningham. She earned her Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science in<br />

Early Childhood Education from Virginia Commonwealth University and her<br />

Master’s in Special Education from Old Dominion University. She also completed<br />

coursework at <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Virginia to earn an endorsement in Administration<br />

and Supervision. In addition to being an Instructional Coach, during her tenure<br />

with <strong>Fluvanna</strong> County Public Schools, Ms. Purnell has served as a Third Grade<br />

<strong>Teacher</strong> at Fork Union, and as Pre-School <strong>Teacher</strong> and Special Education<br />

<strong>Teacher</strong> at Cunningham Elementary. Ms. Sue Davies, Principal <strong>of</strong> Cunningham<br />

Elementary stated, “Karen is well deserving <strong>of</strong> this title. She has made a huge<br />

difference in <strong>the</strong> daily lives <strong>of</strong> students and staff. She works collaboratively to<br />

keep Cunningham ‘ahead <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> curve.’” Karen and her husband Brian have 2<br />

children, Sean and Kate.<br />

Central Elementary School: Ms. Lynn Fender<br />

Ms. Fender teaches Reading at Central Elementary. She has 32 years <strong>of</strong><br />

teaching experience. Ms. Fender is a graduate <strong>of</strong> <strong>Fluvanna</strong> County High<br />

School. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Longwood University. Ms. Fender<br />

also completed graduate work at <strong>the</strong> Citadel. Ms. Fender is licensed in<br />

Developmental Reading and Early Education NK-4. Amy Barnabei, Principal <strong>of</strong><br />

Central Elementary describes Ms. Fender as, “She is friendly, outgoing, warm<br />

and energizing. She is willing to take on any task and is eager to be a problem<br />

solver. She serves students well beyond <strong>the</strong> classroom as a dedicated Title One<br />

<strong>Teacher</strong>, striving for growth, both academic and emotional. She works<br />
